How to replace altimeter adjustment knob? (Dumb question)
Posted by best_glide@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 6 comments
I feel like this is a dumb question, but I really cannot find an answer. Is it possible to remove an adjustment knob on an altimeter? This one is almost too short and I want to add a ring light which will probably make it unusable.
A second question is where can I find a replacement, but the answer may be a salvage yard.
It may be obvious to ask my A&P but I'm a pretty new owner and haven't built a good network yet. Thanks!

There should be a set screw on the side of the knob. Use an allen wrench to loosen the set screw and pull the knob off. Replace the knob with a longer one from Aircraft Spruce or similar.

This is correct, if you can't find one that suits you, go to a local machine shop with your current knob, and have them make one to your specifications.

Ah yes, owner produced part. Good idea.

Thank you! I'm one year in and it has for sure has its ups and downs. Just made it through my first annual which was tough and now can think about doing some minor upgrades.

It would probably be easiest to just find a similar sized knob and superglue it on top of the other one.
