Oddly enough, these are still very popular for drag racing. Albeit as a fiberglass replica used as the body for an "alerted". From sportsman entries all the way up to the one pictured that's been over 300 mph in a standing quarter mile.

American Bantam built the first jeep for the army. Ford and Willys copied/were given their plans. They had experience building lightweight vehicles so they were able to meet the weight requirements.
