172 vs Rv12

Hey everyone I’m about to start my flight training soon and was wondering if anyone could give me advice on which aircraft to fly, both the rv and 172 are glass cockpits (G3x for the Rv and g1000 for Cessna) and the pros and cons on both? Thankyou

Does the RV-12 have enough useful payload for you + CFI + full fuel? If not, that might be a reason to choose the 172.

Rv-12 only has like 20 gal of gas. I think the empty is around 740 and max gross is 1340. So that’s 600 lbs. 2 225 pound guys. Plus 120 of fuel is 570. Not bad

I prefer the G3X over the G1000 but the difference between them(especially for a private pilot) is not really worth consideration. Like everyone else said, just go with whatever is cheaper. I think high wing airplanes are slightly easier to land.

I found myself sucked into a G3X more than a G1000 and had to spend brain bytes to look outside so for that reason, I'd reinforce a decision for the G1000 if it's cheaper, but any large cost difference pushes me to whatever's cheaper

RV-12 has a free castering nose wheel, while the Cessna has a steerable nose wheel.
I love the RV-12. It’s very responsive. It has quirks, but I easily adapted to it.

Nosewheel: so do Grummans, Diamond, and Cirrus.
All successfully used in training environments.
Easily learned how to taxi with such an arrangement.

I don't think /u/chuckop ever implied that one was better than the other, or indeed, that either one isn't successfully used in training environments. They seemed to simply be pointing out a difference between the two types.

I would not recommend primary training in any experimental. You don’t have the experience to determine if the builder is an idiot.
Google John Denver to find out the kind of stuff that can happen.
It’s not legal to rent an experimental to you. It lacks an appropriate airworthiness certificate for that. It will also be challenging to find an examiner.

The RV-12 can also be a factory built LSA. That’s what is used for flight schools

If you can get someone to examine you in the rv12 that would be great. Amazing plane. But the 172 is better prep for later planes.
