ULPT: Request. What industry would be the easiest to break into with a good fake resume.
Posted by ninaslazyeye@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 229 comments
I am a fast learner and good picking things up in the fly. What is an industry that pays fairly well that I could break into with a decent bullshit resume and pick up things as I go. Obviously no medical jobs or anything where anyone could get hurt.
Kraligor@reddit
The real answer is, there is no job that pays well that you need no experience for. Everybody saying sales, sure, but without contacts you'll still start at the very bottom. And unless you're one of the top .001% natural super talents, you'll not be going to make great money any time soon.
classless_classic@reddit
I’ve seen lot of high level jobs filled by under qualified candidates lately.
Secretary of Defense.
Head of Medicare and Medicaid
POTUS
Director of the FBI.
Director of National Intelligence
FDA Chief
Jahbahdiah@reddit
Even on this sub there has to be a snide quirky lil lefty loonie like you, god damn

moto0392@reddit
The only person Trump hired who was fully qualified was Stormy Daniels!
classless_classic@reddit
Now that’s funny.
Randy-Randallmann@reddit
Just apply saying “i am particularly not qualified for this job, would you like me to do it?”
ZadigRim@reddit
I'd give this 100 more upvotes if I could. The amount of high level gov jobs going to those whose only answer is "yes" is beyond belief. "It's going to happen anyway, just let it happen!"

flakzpyro@reddit
I faked my resume at 19. Convinced GM I could sell.
Long story short, I really could sell haha. It was just bullshitting customers. Luckily I was young at the time and indulged in a lot of different things. So I can relate to customers with sports, politics, hobbies etc.
Shivin302@reddit
Selling to your interviewer is all the experience you need to break into sales
ThumpAndSplash@reddit
Well, it seems like all of the shittiest people get into real estate, so there must be a really low bar to entry there.
No_Pattern_7600@reddit
Most people in real estate don't make any money. That's the part they don't tell you.
To qualify to take the test, you have to have significant college credits or a degree. If not, there are several required courses you will need to take first before taking the final test for your license.
After you pass the test, you will still have to hustle for possibly several months before seeing any commissions paid.
Residential real estate definitely follows the 80/20 rule. 80% of real estate agents don't make any money. In some areas, 95% of the agents don't make any money. Plus, it's insanely competitive and people will backstab and steal your contacts if they can get away with it.
MoltenCorgi@reddit
The requirements vary by state, and I’d say yours is uncharacteristically harder than most. There is no college requisite in my state. Anyone with a pulse that can sit thru an online class and take a very simple test can get licensed. I got my license in my early 20’s, and never even cracked the book open. I just paid attention in class. I was the second person to hand in my test when I took the state exam only because I finished so fast I second guessed myself and assumed I forgot a part until someone else turned theirs in. I went outside and the other person was like “did you give up too?” She failed. I got a 99%. Had never bought a house at that point and knew nothing about the practicality of what you actually do for the job. That’s not what they test for. You just need to know the rules and regulations.
It seriously floored me when I got a job and others told me they had to take that test 3+ times to pass. I could have taken it after my first week of class and gotten at least an 80% just by making a smart guess. It was all multiple choice and half the answers were so obviously wrong they could be immediately disqualified and you had a good chance of narrowing it down to the final answer with common sense.

theamazonswordsman@reddit

tjdux@reddit
OP said fake his way in, this is just doing it by the books lol.
namerankserial@reddit
It's because real estate has an incredibly low barrier of entry. You don't need to fake anything. You don't need any prerequisites, you just need to pony up for a three week course. But making money as a real estate agent is another story. There is a lot of competition. Because of the incredibly low barrier of entry.
One-Income3093@reddit
Real Estate requires connections or a huge advertising budget if you want any chance of listing high value homes.
Fhloston-Paradisio@reddit
Even shitty houses in my area are 500k. 2-3% of that isn't bad, even if you only close 1 deal a month
Princess_Moon_Butt@reddit
The problem is getting people to call you specifically. It's not like you get a lot of repeat customers as a real estate agent, and if you're unskilled, you don't get recommended by your clients to their friends, family, and so on.
You basically have to be part of a google-able agency, or throw your business card into a fishbowl and hope that some inexperienced couple happens to call your number instead of reaching for one of the dozens of other business cards that have been thrown at them or emailed to them once they put their names down in an open-house guestbook.
And that's where the marketing budget comes in. Business cards, pens, coozies, keychains, flashlights, multitools, magnets, billboards, SEO, local fliers, whatever else. If you want people to see your name, you have to put your name in a lot of visible places.
One-Income3093@reddit
Even if the houses are “shitty” by local standards, anyone expecting to receive $500k for the sale is going to seek out an agent with a good reputation or good advertising.
UntestedMethod@reddit
Which is why the real scummy sales person is wise to find themselves a niche as a plump little bottom feeder preying on the desperate and naive.
LaserBeamsCattleProd@reddit
Closing a deal a month is a huge deal. It rarely works out like that. It's inconsistent and there are dry spells.

That’s the kind of job you lie to get out of, not to get into.
Princess_Moon_Butt@reddit
Because for a lot of businesses, that's the level that they start offering health and retirement benefits.
Plus, you can use it as a springboard. Lots of retail places will sponsor your forklift certification after you're there for a while, and while forklift operator pay is pretty mediocre, it's usually stable full-time work with access to benefits. You could use the office skills to pivot to an office manager for something more corporate/lower-stress, or maybe train towards a warehouse logistics role for something a bit more skilled.
c0mptar2000@reddit
seriously. Retail management is one area where the management gig is sometimes even worse than the lower level positions due to the salaried hours and unpaid overtime.
onmy40@reddit

UntestedMethod@reddit
Yeah but it's probably one of the best jobs if you really enjoy low stakes power tripping.
Glorwyn@reddit
If you're unemployed or working as something like a shelf stocker, it is much better.
maslowk@reddit
The pay is definitely better as a manager than a stocker but not sure if I'd say it's necesarily worth it IMO. At least where I work, the regular team leads have schedules that flip flop every other week (this week you're days, next you're overnights, now you're half days half midshift, etc). Department managers get decent salaries from what I hear but you're effectivsly on-call 24/7 and work 10+ hour shifts 5 days a week :/
Fmorrison42@reddit
The same trick works for IT based jobs. Say you worked in xyz department for 5 years up til it was bought out and everyone was fired.

My cousin does this. He hasn’t, in his life, had a job he was qualified for but has been gainfully employed in sales jobs for years. He just fakes a resume that matches the job listing and then lies through any questions that arise. *he does a lot of bad things ON TOP of lying lot.

SOLD!
No_Pattern_7600@reddit
The easiest entry to sales is working for a large name brand car dealership.
No experience required. They will pay you while you're training, and allow you to take a draw on future earnings once you start working.
They won't tell you beforehand, but the money is in used cars. Used car salespeople make 2X - 3x more than new car salespeople do. It's much easier to hide the value in a used car than in a new car.
Making money in sales is all about putting in the time and effort. If you look at the people who are making the most money you'll see they're also usually putting in the most hours and thought into their job.
JohnSextro@reddit
Yes, however you’ll also need to BS a book of business. For high-end sales jobs that IS your resume.
atlantiscrooks@reddit
Another bump for this. You can learn it all on the fly, although of course the more you already know about the thing the better. But you can fake it until you make it, as they say, but try for something you've got some experience in.

Tangentially related, but every wastewater treatment plant near me is practically begging for employees right now. Lots of operator roles are $25-$30/hr starting, with health and retirement options, and are only asking for a high school diploma and 'mechanical aptitude', which I'm sure anyone can pretend to have.
Not really an ULPT, just... kind of general advice. A lot of them seem to be looking for wonky shifts (12 hours every other day, 2nd/3rd shift, or some weird combination) but plenty are looking for regular weekday 7a-4p roles.
paddjo95@reddit

Fred Brito is a master conman. As a young man, he impersonates a senior Marine officer, lives off a series of rich lovers (of both sexes), and embezzles $1,000 from his job at a bank. After serving prison time for credit card fraud in both Canada and the United States, Brito cons his way into a series of top white collar positions, including lawyer, CEO, psychiatrist, executive director, and serving on the planning commission for the city of Lancaster, California. While in this position, he is exposed as a fraud and spends a year in prison for parole violations. Once free, Brito embezzles money from a law firm where he is posing as an attorney and flees to Mexico, where he cons his way into the priesthood. Brito serves as a priest in Mexico, Yuma, and Phoenix before being discovered and captured. He serves 18 months for the embezzlement from the law firm.

Contract based fieldwork doing CRM (cultural resource management) archaeology. Started at $16/h and now around $35/h after a few years. Entirely field-learned profession if you can fake your Anthropology degree or previous field school experience. Might have to make conversation about it, but the idea is to absorb survey and excavation methodology, documenting encounters with historic artifacts. The deeper you go, the more you learn about geography, soil science, geology, the biology and interaction of animals with the world and human beings. All major cities have companies based out of there to do this environmental compliance work ahead of construction projects.

Bartending. Serving. I started in NYC.
I had only been a host in high school.
Everywhere asked for NYC experience, so I made some up from places I had eaten, but were closed. And put some experience from my old hometown.
Had my aunt with a different last name be one of my references.
I watched YouTube videos to learn how to serve casually and fine dining. I emulated them. First two jobs I shadowed, I was called out for being bad.
Had no shame lol Learned what I did wrong. Third job stuck. Did that for years making good money.
Then decided to learn to bartend. I already understood how a bar runs and had been watching. Didn't want to start as a bar back which is the classic way.
Watched videos again, practiced pouring at home with liquor bottles filled with water. Practiced shaking drinks and memorized the recipes to the top 20 basic cocktails. Got a slowish one day a week gig, got better, started shifting my work to bartending instead of serving.
Spent my entire 20s and beginning of 30s working no more than 3-4 days a week, $80k, could go on vacation whenever I wanted.
Hasn't been the same since quarantine, more competition for jobs done so many industries are floundering, but there is still money to be made!

Savet@reddit
It depends on the employer. Generally, the background check company also verifies past employment and education. If you're going to deal with any sensitive data, they're going to verify your background. When I first started in tech, the entry level IT help desk role gave me access to things like credit card numbers, customer information, etc. If you're going to lie, at least lie well.

Applied psychology, like in HR
Personal finance advisor
Nutritionist
-NotAHedgeFund-@reddit
Personal Financial Advisor would not work. The amount of industry knowledge and licensing needed would disqualify you immediately.
qwertycandy@reddit
Sadly, that one is based on experience - I know several people that failed at everything they could, then went through some quick crash course by some financial institution, either bank or less reputable financial company, and now they are "personal financial advisors".
-NotAHedgeFund-@reddit
Oh, well in that case I don’t necessarily think you’re answering the question that was asked. I agree that you can definitely get into an entry level “financial advisor” position with no experience. These positions are often magnets for burnouts. They don’t pay anything though. They are heavily commissioned and they will take anyone.
OP seems to be asking about somewhere they could go work and make good money by faking their experience and credentials. Joining what is effectively a MLM like Primerica or something doesn’t really qualify for that.
I guess my point is that if you attempt to interview for an actual advisor position that pays well and requires experience, it would be hilarious.
qwertycandy@reddit
True, a high quality, actual advisor wouldn't work. But this lower quality "advisor" who is almost a rebranded sales position would work - ideally just show some spoofed experience with similar work at another company, to get your foot in the door, and then if the person has the right personality for sales, which OP seems to, then such a "personal finance advisor" could work and also pay well.
Shaneaux@reddit
Imma say no on nutritionist unless you’re in a country that doesn’t think it’s a real thing. I live in California and you have to have a bachelors, and sometimes also a RDN. So unless you plan on faking college degrees too it’s prob a good idea to scratch that one.
qwertycandy@reddit
I live in one of those countries where it's more murky, yes. But I also wonder how hard it would be to spoof american college records - I remember someone here describing the process.
Personally, I would never do that, but I wouldn't lie about job history either.
Shaneaux@reddit
Honestly it’s probably not as hard as we would think. I know someone who either faked the degree or faked their paperwork to be a registered nurse. I think at the end of it people said she basically found someone with the same first name and age, got a fake id with that last name, provided with her real id, said she had gotten married and there was snafu with her maiden name/vs married name. I’m sure there was a lot more to it but….she got away with it for a while, a couple years. She had done some nursing school and had completed a CNA program so it wasn’t too much of a stretch since she had terminology and nursing skills covered.

AI consultant! I know someone who does this, and they made up a bunch of bs credentials so companies pay them to type stuff into chatgpt. Every company wants to say they're 'ai driven' and invest in such things but they don't know what they need

Apply for the job of head of security at the Louvre. I believe that they may be hiring and based on past performance, I don’t think you need any qualifications or experience in the field.

Wherever you end up, being kind and respectful to the people who work below or adjacent to you will go a LONG way to learning on the fly. These folks can teach you your whole job if they want to, or they can stonewall you and “accidentally” C.C. your boss when you mess up.

Data Science. I work with data scientists every day, many of them don’t know anything. 😭
ZadigRim@reddit
I'd like to know more about this as someone with some actual data science experience (and MS). What's missing here, industry or business domain knowledge? Or is it that they can't produce the models or interpret the results?
ZekeTarsim@reddit
A lot of the data scientists I work with have some basic python (pyspark) knowledge and can follow instructions from their analytics lead.
Most of them are not bad, but they are unexceptional: constantly need help with basic tasks, don’t leverage tools like ai chat bots, aren’t creative thinkers, etc.
Regarding modeling, it’s like a few of them have a deep understanding, and the rest of them are just using templates and have no idea what to do when there are errors.
It’s a good career and I’m always amazed by how mediocre a lot of these people are.
HodloBaggins@reddit
Did they get in by cheating or nepotism or what? I was under the impression getting a data science job is no easier than a dev job. And dev is brutal right now. Especially if high paying.
ZekeTarsim@reddit
To be honest I don’t know the hiring criteria or how they are selected. I am in analytics support, so I am not a data scientists but I am adjacent: I train and offer ongoing support to the data science teams.
I don’t have the sense that they are total frauds with no experience, rather, they know just enough to qualify and give good interviews.
I am probably being a bit unfair to them, not really knowing their professional backgrounds, just my harsh observation of people who constantly need my help. 😄
HodloBaggins@reddit
Got you. I’m desperately looking for a job and was surprised.
ZekeTarsim@reddit
If you’re in one of the major cities (Chicago, NYC, Boston, etc) dm me, I can give you my company info. Always hiring (15000+ employee corp)

Office administrator seems to be the lowest barrier to entry job in the professional world. If you find the right company, it can pay relatively well considering the minimal qualifications needed.

I knew a guy who BS'ed his way into a bookkeeping job. They eventually found out and fired his dumb ass. Lol but it could do in a short-term pinch if you find a company stupid enough to fall for it.
Additionally, I've known a few bookkeepers who don't come across as super intelligent themselves and they all seem to love saying how stupid their predecessors are... Sooo I'm just gonna go ahead and suggest bookkeeper for this one.

SaaS sales. Tons of research before an interview using chat gpt. It’s particularly well suited for this because it’s been written about as nauseam so the models have it nailed. Also they just want warm bodies for the grind. Once hired it’s all a numbers game. If you work your ass off and put up good metrics you can go from $ to $$$$ really quickly.

Sales. If you can bullshit, you can do sales. High turnover so they almost never verify your resume. The education requirements are lower too unless it's something like pharmaceutical sales that requires a degree.
