Samsung makes ads on $3,499 smart fridges official with upcoming software update

The real question is who was stupid enough to shell out 3.5k for a Samsung fridge? If you do more than a few minutes of research you would know Samsung Appliances have the literal worst customer and warranty service on the planet, by far.
cadaada@reddit
Rich people dont really care do they? They just get a pricey one from a known brand and thats it
9Blu@reddit
Rich people are buying Zline, Dacor, Thermador, Viking, Miele, SubZero or one of the other "high-end" crazy expensive brands.
These Samsung 'smart' fridges are for the upper-middle class to overspend on.
Strazdas1@reddit
Miele is now high-end crazy expensive brand?
9Blu@reddit
When haven't they been? They are pretty common in $10M and up homes. I mean, multi-thousand dollar range tops, washers/dryers, stoves, etc.
Strazdas1@reddit
Must be different Miele then, because Miele here in europe is a bit expensive but not much different from other brands.
Just looked it up, 900-1500 euros for a washer/dryer, 1000 stoves, 1500 fridges. The truly crazy thing i saw was >1k for a coffee maker.
cadaada@reddit
These are still rich compared to the majority...?
9Blu@reddit
By that measure every American, Canadian, Brit, etc are "rich".
Strazdas1@reddit
I think he meant rich in relation to middle class and bellow, not to other countries.
9Blu@reddit
Even still, there is a wide gap from upper-middle class and what I'd consider "rich". Even most upper-middle class would be in financial crisis if they lost their income for an extended period of time.
Meanwhile someone with $40M in the bank, the kind of person who wouldn't blink at spending $8K on a fridge or $12K on a stove, could probably coast for the rest of their lives on their investment income alone.
Strazdas1@reddit
I think you dont understand how people get rich and how rich people act. Most rich are rich because they dont buy bullshit like 12k stoves.
agray20938@reddit
Hilarious that you included Dacor in this, when they are just Samsung's own high-end line. Dacor is basically just the Lexus to Samsung's Toyota.
9Blu@reddit
Sure but demographic that buys a Lexus LC 500 isn't the same as the demographic that buys a Toyota Corolla. Most appliance makers have luxury brands.
Also GE doesn't make appliances anymore. They sold the line to Haier. GE is just a nameplate now. So Monogram is now a high-end Haier.
BatteryPoweredFriend@reddit
Rich people don't buy white goods, they hire people to buy it for them.
nWhm99@reddit
Rich people don’t buy Samsung appliances, they buy Sub Zero and Gaggenau.
BlueGoliath@reddit
Brand name carries a lot of weight across product categories. Someone may wrongly assume that because Samsung has a amazing reputation and warranty for computer components that it would also apply to appliances.
PhillAholic@reddit
Yes but this means someone bought a second one.
DeviousPath@reddit
50% issue rate still means half of the people experience no problems, and wouldn't see a reason to not buy the same brand again unless they do research. Most people don't if they had a good experience with the brand they have.
Blue-150@reddit
This is true. I had a samsung for 11 years, sold it with the house. Never knew they had poor customer service since i never had a problem. They were expensive so I wouldn't go that route again though
Strazdas1@reddit
14 years and going, the only issues are those i heard online, noone i know in real life had an issue with samsung fridge.
Blue-150@reddit
Mine would be 15 years had i not moved. Maybe they made em better back then. I know thats true with many appliances.
Strazdas1@reddit
Well, when i bought mine i had the option of choosing same model but one assembled in Romania, another in Korea. I picked the assembled in Korea option. Maybe the ones made in Romania are failing?
PhillAholic@reddit
It's still surprising to me. Everyone I know, and I'm not exaggerating as had an issue with their Samsung Appliance, and Most of them have had multiple issues.
BlueGoliath@reddit
The same person probably isn't buying a bad fridge twice. It's widely known modern fridges aren't as reliable but people typically aren't buying stupidly expensive fridges to begin with.
ComplexEntertainer13@reddit
They actually can be if you spend similar amounts inflation adjusted as 30-40 years ago.
Or well, as long as that extra money isn't spent on IOT, ice makers and a fucking touch screen etc. You would mostly be looking at more commercially oriented units/brands.
Green_Struggle_1815@reddit
they don't
CrankedOnDaPerc30@reddit
Yeah but they wouldn't have amazing reputation or warranty for computer parts either. At this point they just feel like barons who are so big you have no choice but to transact with them eventually.
alonjit@reddit
other than ssds ... what computer components? their android phones hardware-wise looks fine, but the software is written by drunken monkeys. and the UI is designed by designers on mountains of drugs.
Strazdas1@reddit
my Samsung fridge has had zero issues for 14 years.
Schmich@reddit
Eh? That's very regional based.
anival024@reddit
I'm gonna go ahead and say that the company that sends out techs that will take a box cutter your TV just to deny service, then try to take down videos providing direct evidence of it, is going to have problems throughout all of its branches.
Zarndell@reddit
Yeah, Samsung fridges and ACs are amazing, in my part of the world.
exomachina@reddit
The thing is, the "premium" market brands like Bosch and Cafe are easily 4-5k a fridge. These Samsung Bespoke models are always $1000-$1700 off sticker price at most US retailers. They sell like hotcakes, especially around the holidays because you get all these premium features for half the price of the of premium brands. Everyone wants to show off a new fridge during the holidays.
Krigen89@reddit
We've had a Samsung fridge for 12 years now, only had 2 very minor issues I was able to solve myself.
Warranty and support are very region-dependant anyway
Plank_With_A_Nail_In@reddit
Why on earth are you spending this much on fridge in the first place?
Top-Tie9959@reddit
It's the most expensive so you know has to be good!
skrillex_sk2@reddit
I always buy Samsung. Never had an issue with their support. Probably depends on location.
blazze_eternal@reddit
Maybe future apartments/renters who have deals with ad agencies?
Fresh-Toilet-Soup@reddit
I haven't had any luck with Samsung. Also, they only gave me $150 for the recalled washer that was about to explode.
deefop@reddit
Why wouldn't they? People keep buying the stupid shit
midorikuma42@reddit
This is exactly how I feel. It's the same when people complain about the ads and spyware in Microsoft Windows. I'm really sick of people throwing money at these user-hostile companies and then complaining about being treated poorly as a customer.
mujhe-sona-hai@reddit
tbf there's often no other choice than Windows. Windows is compatible with everything. FOSS on Linux is lacking, there's no equivalent Office, Libreoffice is very lacking, Word, Powerpoint, Excel, the backbone of the financial world. Gimp is not as good as Photoshop. It's fine for web browsing 90% of the time but when you need that 10% you'll need to use Windows and it's just less headache.
hollow_bridge@reddit
Imo this isn't really valid for several reasons. You can use microsoft office apps on linux via cloud (which is what most people use anyhow) or wine.
Powerpoint is a trash presentation app, I've barely seen it used in the last 15 years, using it is a dead giveaway that you don't care about the presentation.
Word is definitely the most common word processor, but doesn't matter, no one gives a shit what word processor you use, and the only significant feature it has over librewriter is copilot.
Excel does have some features that librecalc doesn't have but they are extremely niche, I do a lot of work on complicated customized database, inventory control and invoicing spreadsheets and I've never needed anything else or seen any incompatibilities.
I do agree about gimp, but again photoshop cloud, wine, or krita.
FOSS isn't lacking on Linux at all, it's just different. Different apps, sometimes better, sometimes worse, sometimes they just function differently, but if you don't know what you're looking for it can be challenging to find or implement your alternatives. For example security cam apps are better and free on linux, but winscp on windows is better than anything on linux, and remote connections are pretty different on both.
Strazdas1@reddit
At this point ill take the .44 Magnum the other poster was talking about. The cloud version of microsoft apps is utter ass with half the functionality either broking or not available.
Either you are one of those people that do the most basic tasks for 4 hours that could be solved with a formula in 5 minutes or lying.
hollow_bridge@reddit
i agree, cloud mostly sucks, but its become something of a norm which i expect to grow, i've been in a lot of offices where cloud is the only thing allowed to be used.
Not lying, I've made a bunch of my own formulas that are fairly complex; for example customer database, inventory database, invoicing, commissions, profitability charts, taxes is all linked and automated as much as possible, my sheets are also agnostic to linux/windows (even file paths) and fully compatible with excel (I use excel documents from customers very often too, and about half my work is on windows machines. I'm guessing you haven't used librecalc in a very long time, many years ago it used to lack a few important formula options that excel had, but that was a long time ago, nowadays librecalc even has some functions that excel doesn't. What are you doing that you can't figure out in librecalc?
Strazdas1@reddit
Visual basic powered custom addons with custom functions all integrated inside excel file.
Mr_Hous@reddit
None of those apps run on wine. Office cloud lacks features. It doesn't matter how shitty ms office is, its the standard and you want compat with it. Linux users are often out of touch and it won't be yotld anytime soon.
Sightline@reddit
Google Docs and Sheets work just fine on Linux.
Strazdas1@reddit
I would literally jump off the bridge first.
Mr_Hous@reddit
One would expect them to... I just don't know how smart it is to tell ppl to use cloud apps to escape ms spying lmao
IAmYourFath@reddit
Linuxers are so delulu, what os is not even remotely close to being installable.
hollow_bridge@reddit
ubuntu is just as easy to install as windows. I know a lot of people get confused about which linux distro to go with and many are more difficult to install, but for new users really ubuntu should be the only choice.
hollow_bridge@reddit
https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?iId=17&sClass=application
https://www.wps.com/blog/how-to-install-and-run-microsoft-office-on-linux-wine-a-comprehensive-guide/
libreoffice is compatible with it, everything is lol.
And compatibility even if it wasn't a thing isn't that important.
You should never be sharing word documents with outside organizations as they have significant security vulnerabilities. Any intelligent business will only be sharing pdfs. It doesn't matter if you are editing back and forth. You should purposefully send drafts as pdfs so that shared partners dont edit them back to you with edits you are not aware of.
midorikuma42@reddit
Why should I care about compatibility? How is a home user interacting with other people with Office documents?
As I pointed out before, business users use a different version of Windows that doesn't have all the annoying ads, so none of this stuff applies to them. Home users don't need the latest version of MS Office. Google docs is free and is fine for their needs, and so is LibreOffice.
Mr_Hous@reddit
Creating documents from scratch is uncommon for most ppl lol. They wanna view and edit documents mainly. Both will break in libreoffice and gdocs. If you make your assignment in libreoffice and give your prof an odt he'll laugh at you and tell you to make a docx.
midorikuma42@reddit
LibreOffice works just fine with docx. I use it professionally for this.
Mr_Hous@reddit
Not every time. I have personally had it break several documents.
Wobblycogs@reddit
I think you're falling into the electric car trap, you know, the one where everyone thinks they need 500 miles of range but never actually drives that far.
I would rather use MS Office than LibreOffice, but that's because I'm more familiar with MS Office. In terms of functionality, I can't think of anything. LibreOffice is not as smooth as MS Office but you'd get used to it.
Yes, Gimp isn't as good as Photos shop, and I doubt it ever will be. Not everyone is a graphic artist, though. If you are, then you probably need Windows. For the vast majority of people Gimp is just fine.
The vast majority of office workers and home users could 100% use Linux now. Programmers, I would argue, are better off on Linux.
Strazdas1@reddit
Its not a trap. People DO need range, just not every day. And libra office excel is completely unusable and lacking functions for me. Microsoft is the only ones offering the functions i need. I use GIMP frequently, and i hate its obscure archaic way of doing things all the time. I remmeber having better experience with Photoshop 15 years ago.
Wobblycogs@reddit
Calling libre office unusable, for me at least, sends the credibility of your argument down to zero. I'm sure it doesn't have all the obscure functions of Excel, but it's really close. I struggle to believe you are that much of a power user of Excel that you couldn't figure out how to do what you wanted in calc.
Strazdas1@reddit
Its the oppsite, calling it usable is what sends the credibility of argument to zero, as you clearly dont use it for anything but the very basic functions.
Its not really cose. Its about as close as a race between a horse and a F-1 car.
pdp10@reddit
Blink three times if Steve Ballmer is holding a .44 Magnum to your skull.
scielliht987@reddit
And Visual Studio.
droptableadventures@reddit
Seriously, how have so few people heard of Krita - it's FOSS like GIMP, but it's far more polished and usable. It's actually used by some commercial artists.
Also many in the graphic design industry are running Photoshop on Mac for a reason...
Mr_Hous@reddit
Krita is for digital art rather than general editing... It can't replace photoshop for pros
droptableadventures@reddit
Certainly, it's not as complete for the other side of what you use Photoshop for, but for a good proportion of what people use Photoshop for, it's perfectly adequate.
mujhe-sona-hai@reddit
Yeah but as I said it’s that 10% that makes Windows the default choice
midorikuma42@reddit
Are we talking about work computers or home computers? They're not the same (and they're usually not the same Windows). The corporate versions of Windows don't normally have ads AFAIK (mine doesn't). If Linux doesn't work for your work stuff, that's your employer's problem anyway. Your job is to use the equipment provided to you.
For home stuff, you can choose to put up with Windows and its ads, or not. If you don't like the Free alternatives to some software, and you stick with Windows because of that, that's a personal choice that you made. You could have chosen the ad-free alternative, but you didn't. LibreOffice and Gimp/Krita are more than sufficient for home use, and they're free too.
mujhe-sona-hai@reddit
You say I could have chosen the ad free alternative but I literally have no ads on my Windows because I debloated it with OO ShutUp. It's the best of both worlds really, all the compatibility of Windows but none of the ads or telemetry. And I didn't even pay for Windows.
Saneless@reddit
That's not even close to the same thing. Everyone from age 2 on up can use just about any fridge and there are a dozen choices of brands. How many people can learn a new OS or how many even have an option for their software?
midorikuma42@reddit
Grandma isn't using some kind of fancy proprietary Windows-only software on her PC; she's just using a web browser.
And for the people at home who do use some kind of proprietary software, there's almost certainly a Mac version, so they're not really tied to Windows.
Strazdas1@reddit
turns out she is, because her hearing aid requires it for synching and you just broke he hearing by installing linux. whoops.
no1kn0wsm3@reddit
Rather buy a Panasonic inverter refrigerator.
_HOG_@reddit
Oddly specific? Japanese marketing in India?
no1kn0wsm3@reddit
This is r/hardware and I'm a PH citizen living in PH.
I love my energy saving inverter AC, fridge, laundry machine and even microwave oven.
crshbndct@reddit
All modern fridges have inverter motors, aside from the really small cheap ones.
MantuaMan@reddit
This is why in 2011 I bought a fridge like you may have in your work break room. One door, freezer on top, no motherboard, no water dispenser. Room to fit a large pizza box in, $500, Still working, never needed service, and my beer is still very cold.
HulksInvinciblePants@reddit
You bought a basic fridge in 2011 because of a technology that wouldn’t be out for 3 years?
BlueGoliath@reddit
I think what they meant is that they had felt which way the wind was blowing and bought an older style fridge before it got real bad.
HulksInvinciblePants@reddit
Nearly 15 years before the moment is quite the read.
sagewah@reddit
We last bought a fridge 2-3 years ago. The samsung model on the floor with the big display was already clearly set up for data collection and future advertsising - certainly, it wouldn't do the display thing until you'd consented to both.
BlueGoliath@reddit
Some people have crystal balls.
Strazdas1@reddit
Some people have Palantiri and think its a crytal ball.
MantuaMan@reddit
You can still buy one like that. I will again if that one ever breaks.
MantuaMan@reddit
Sometimes we forget why we are buying something, It's function is to keep things cold, and frozen. It may not do that if it falls victim to a Ransomware attack.
cc_network@reddit
Honestly low tech is the best for practical applications. I replaced the door seals on my 2003 fridge and replaced the suspension springs on a '97 top loader washer, both good as new.
einmaldrin_alleshin@reddit
There have been considerable advances since 2003 though. More reliable, directly driven washing machines, heat pump dryers that use a fraction of the energy, much quieter and more efficient compressors in fridges, even microwaves with inverters.
It's just that the enshittification is taking hold of the industry
Proglamer@reddit
Don't forget the "modern" washing cycles taking 3 hours when the same cycles took only 1 hour in the "bad, old, water-wasting" washers
Cheerful_Champion@reddit
Just because it takes longer doesn't mean it uses more resources. In fact, it takes longer specifically because they use less water and often heat it up to a lower temperature. To compensate for that program is longer to allow any stains to soak etc.
Proglamer@reddit
time is a resource. In fact, time is the one irreplaceable resource.
Cheerful_Champion@reddit
I'll give you a pro tip: you don't have to watch washing machine while it's working, you can do other things
Proglamer@reddit
Pro tip: it only takes one case of washing machine flooding the neighbors below to get into a habit of staying home while it is running. This restricts the schedule and wastes time, despite being able to "do other things" - but at home, perforce
Strazdas1@reddit
I literally run mine overnight as i sleep, i dont loose any schedule.
anival024@reddit
Time is your most limited resource.
Cheerful_Champion@reddit
Same answer as to other dude: you know laundry doesn't require you starring at it? You can do anything while it's working
Top-Tie9959@reddit
Do they have fast mode still?
Cheerful_Champion@reddit
Yeah, they do
Strazdas1@reddit
this actually saves energy and water because it can take its time.
anival024@reddit
Usually you put the punch line at the end of the joke, not the start.
Kyanche@reddit
I have yet to see this in a single prole-grade (<$1000) appliance.
surf_greatriver_v4@reddit
You can still buy these btw, and they're cheaper than $500
I_JuanTM@reddit
So a normal fridge? Except that the fridge is on top, where it is usually on the bottom in my experience. Having a double fridge with an ice cube dispenser or some shit like that isn't normal and basically noone I know has that. I only see it in tv series and movies
Kytescall@reddit
Something about a normal fridge being described as 'like the one you might have in your work break room' horrifies me. It's a normal fridge.
BlueGoliath@reddit
You can still find those kind of fridges today. Still not as reliable but better than high tech fridges.
randomstranger454@reddit
Friendly reminder that Samsung removed steam link from TVs.
If after all this you still buy Samsung things then you deserve whatever they add or remove.
Strazdas1@reddit
There is not date for this, but also
So sounds like Samsung simply stopped development.
randomstranger454@reddit
Yes. Samsung just stop maintaining a gaming feature for their TVs due to whatever reason and "and look forward to bringing you more exciting gaming updates in the near future." which never came in those TVs. Tell me why should someone trust such a company with this kind of terrible track record?
Whatever development resources they might have gained by cancelling pale in comparison with what Valve has to do to maintain the source of steam link. Samsung's work could possibly be done automatically based on Valve's source.
And if we had the option to downgrade firmware we could possibly use steam link again.
After so many years I am still waiting for those "exciting gaming updates" to materialize in my TV.
Suntzu_AU@reddit
That pissed me off so much. It was one of the weird features which I actually enjoyed.
randomstranger454@reddit
Me too. I got the steamdeck and after some time I said wouldn't be cool to use steam link to see the picture on the on my Samsung. Try it and nowhere to be found. Can't install, can't sideload, can't downgrade firmware. Such a shitshow. Now I can only use my main PC as a steamlink to show on the Samsung which defeats all point as it is a power hungry beast. And then it's graphically better to run the game on the PC and use steam link to use the steamdeck as a controller.
At least I can steamlink the steamdeck on my Quest 3.
Between this, the bad support and bugs for top model phones after they get old and the push of their mediocre 'Samsung software platform' I am never touching anything Samsung ever again.
My sibling asked me for a recommendation for a TV and said anything but Samsung and the moment I said it was about the software they immediately remembered their own experiences with that on their old TVs.
They are just bad. Also they don't support Dolby Vision due to marketing reasons and pushing their own shit. Even their latest Samsung Galaxy XR headset doesn't support it. And shit online shops put that some of their TVs support it but when you check reviews or specs it doesn't.
Even samsung magician for ssd maintenance has shitty ads. Chatbot on your face, ad for downloading their mobile magician on your phone and ads for their storage solutions.
I wish they would just die.

Fridge smart
Samsung smart
Consumers not smart
_skimbleshanks_@reddit
If only we had some kind of governing body that could make common sense regulations like "you can't sell a fridge with compute then decide later on it's going to run ads", or any other number of ways to solve this. Alas, regulation bad I hear.

And this is why my Fridge is bought used, it was made in 1993, and i recently paid to have a new compressor retrofitted and of course a new charge, like hell am i using one of these smart fridges.
teutorix_aleria@reddit
There's no reason your fridge needs a screen on it. It was always a backdoor for ads.
Flaimbot@reddit
actually a front door /s
Bubbaganewsh@reddit
It's like they put out the screens to get people to get used to them and warm up to them with ads being the plan all along. I would never buy one but I don't have any IOT devices in my house.
Schmich@reddit
For sure but people often put pictures or calendars on there. There's already a tiny screen for controlling the fridge so this is combining it all.
The issue isn't the screen, but the company putting ads.
teutorix_aleria@reddit
Again seems like a solution in search of a problem. Everyone already has calendars in their phones, or hanging on their wall. My fridge has smart features and touch controls but no LCD because i dont need to play candy crush on a fridge.

Next years model will be cheaper at just $2,499, but you will get locked out unless you watch a full 45 second ad. Groundbreaking sensors will act to anticipate your needs...and make sure your eyeballs are watching the ad, which pauses when you look away at any time.
midorikuma42@reddit
No, they're going to keep the price the same, or perhaps raise it, but then they'll require a monthly subscription fee for "maintenance". And you'll have constant ads streaming on it too.

Wait until you see the prices of samsung and lg fridge replacement parts. You see that auto-fill pitcher? That's $150 just for a pitcher. Icemaker tray cracking? $120 for the whole assembly. Broken brittle cable inside the fridge door? Nope can't disassemble your door to fix that wire, we'll maybe if your an endoscopy surgeon.
