Muskrat stew. Told a friend about my posting here and he sent me this. Was a pot of stew he had at a party on the reservation.

Is... it still alive?
Vegetable-Bowl2462@reddit
Lots of indigenous foods aren’t pretty or even tasty but man are they nutritious
Plant-Based_Native@reddit
Very heavily meat-based too. Can't survive on bannock and berries alone as a native vegan so I venture to town once in a while.
sugarcubetea@reddit
do you mind if i ask what lead you to becoming vegan? as you said since native foods can often be reliant on meats and hunting so im curious to hear your thinking, but no worries if you prefer not to respond
Plant-Based_Native@reddit
It was weight loss at the start. I was over 320 lbs at my heaviest when I became vegetarian in late 2019. Decided to commit to the animal rights movement by going fully vegan. I really want to see the buffalo return to freely roaming North America again. I eat a lot of bannock with nutritional yeast and wild berries. Still alive 6 years later lol. With inflation in Canada I can really understand why people still preferring hunting and I respect and maintain my boundaries with my family. I get a lot of jokes and questions.
Vegetable-Bowl2462@reddit
Very. The native Alaskan diet is heavily seal, whale, moose, birds, fish… nothing quite like it. My gramma once had me try whale blubber dipped in rendered seal oil. I prefer the berries and fish, haha
Figgy_Puddin_Taine@reddit
the two distinct native Alaskan foods I know off the top of my head are the fat mixed with berries and the ominously-named stink heads lol
gotta eat what you got
WormWithGoodIntent@reddit
Pemmican!!!
kinamarie@reddit
My guess is that they’re talking about akutaq rather than pemmican!!
WormWithGoodIntent@reddit
Awesome. Learned a new word! Thank you!
Figgy_Puddin_Taine@reddit
I think that was from farther east and south, but yeah, there was a freaking war fought over pemmican due to its importance.
WormWithGoodIntent@reddit
Right I think a lot of foods with the same idea were grouped under the pemmican label. Afaik they all originated in native cultures though.
Vegetable-Bowl2462@reddit
My aunties love stink heads. I prefer the agutaq (whipped fish, fat, sugar, and berries)
elonmusktheturd22@reddit (OP)
Unfortunately many Americans are going to start eating like this again very soon

Hope your folks are ok with everything going on out there
Vegetable-Bowl2462@reddit
Thank you. Luckily most of my family got away with minor damage as they’re further inland (Y/K region) but the Kipnuk and Kwig folks have been heavy on my mind all week.
It has been wholesome to see native foods being provided for them. Not sure if they got any flipper but looks like they got some good stuff! I’m sure it’s nice to have some comfort in that way.
AlaskanAsAnAdjective@reddit
Oh good. I keep imagining what it would be like to be in your home with your whole family, floating away, not knowing whether you’ll come to rest on land or at the bottom of the Bering Sea. Scary stuff. Glad your folks are okay!
big_duo3674@reddit
I'm Minnesotan, and I actually enjoy lutefisk on the rare occasion I happen to be somewhere that is serving it. Kinda similar, but thjey don't bury it anymore. It's basically fish that is fermented in lye, and then rinsed a whole ton so you don't chemical burn your tongue off. It smells like absolute rotten fish death, and has a kinda jello consistency

Nah that's a muskrat. Muskrats btw also have a taste for nibbling transducer cables on fishing boat transoms in the marina, kill them too!
joshjaxnkody@reddit
You can't kill every animal that annoys you, china already tried that with birds in the 20th century
Porkwarrior2@reddit
Muskrat, to Nutria...to China?
That pot of thick deliciousness has what to do with anything that goes on in your head?
And apparently both the OP AND creator of deliciousness have Native status cards...so yes, they can kill anything that annoys them.
makebelievethegood@reddit
careful with the wording there, if that was law they could kill white people
Porkwarrior2@reddit
Nah, but they can steal white people's trucks to go trapping Muskrats with impunity.
Beeeracuda@reddit

bloopbloopsplat@reddit

Beeeracuda@reddit

buttered_scone@reddit
Many rodents have orange teeth, this comes from iron complexes in their enamel, which helps to make it incredibly durable. Beavers often have extremely orange stained teeth.

Looks like gumbo to my Cajun eyes. Instead of muskrat, we’d probably use nutria or gator or turtle. Most people only know about chicken or seafood gumbo, but my maw maw straight up made soup out of a turtle we found in the ditch once. She also had Hanson’s disease bc she grew up eating armadillos.

Sinigang with fish head? Damn nesr my favorite version of it. Used to make is with my carcasses all the time when I had them leftover from fishing
713nikki@reddit
That’s delicious; I’ve had sinigang before and loved it! My favorite is a Cantonese recipe - steamed whole fish with ginger and soy. It isn’t really complex but it smells and tastes so good.
CashWrecks@reddit
There's s Thai version of that is like to cook that's done by stuffing with herbs and aromatics, steaming in water with a touch of soy/fish sauce/oyster sauce on the fish, and finishing by covering it with chopped chili and garlic and pouring hot oil over the whole thing
