Fish ID. Potentially a juvenile grunt of sorts?

I was gonna go for a French Grunt, even if the face of your guy gives me more snapper ID, the juvenile phase of this Haemulon flavolineatum, offers more checked boxes in regards to body shape and patterns in contrast (because color can fail us underwater).

Today I learned I have never recognized these guys as juvenile flavolineatum. My money is still on Tomtate for OP tho.

I agree with Tomtate. Here’s a link of a photo matching the colors in a Tomtate caught off of Sugarloaf Key.

Tomtate. For your viewing pleasure, here are thousands and thousands on a wreck offshore North Carolina https://youtu.be/RUk8UMFowoU?si=H7IClgU6rqa-rb-I

Grunt or a snapper but I'm having trouble coming up with any. I'm relatively familiar with Caribbean species of those, but none are jumping out at me.

If you haven't done so already - try iNaturalist! It’s a FREE-to-use joint initiative between the California Academy of Science and National Geographic Society that crowd sources biodiversity data. It has its own algorithm to identify organisms in your photos and if that doesn't work, you can post your photos on the site or app along with a geographic location for identification from other iNaturalist users. https://www.inaturalist.org/
