China's Beijing First Automobile created a series of State and Inspection limousines in a bid to become the official car supplier for the state (the contract would eventually go to Hongqi).. The first two inspection limos would be presented in 1958 followed by two series of fully enclosed models.

Weird? More like fucking sick! Much prettier than soviet GAZ-13 from similar era IMO (but don't get me wrong, GAZ is also cool!)

Those are amazingly normal looking. Not even any weird detailing. If you told me they were prototypes for an American car that never went into production I'd believe it.

they remind me of Checkers

I was going to say, compared to Soviet Bloc cars of the same era they look very nice, with none of the unsettling proportions I associate with Communist cars. They don't treat much new ground that US cars hadn't (though I don't think I've seen that kinda nice wraparound grille anywhere else) but that's hardly a knock for something China was making for the first time.

hence why the pictures are tagged as obscure.

That's pretty clearly a stolen 1955 Chevy B body with different styling

It was common back then to send used American bucks that pressed sheet metal used in car production to other countries. I'm not saying that happened here, but that car looks suspiciously like any 1958 GM vehicle. The 1958 GM's were a one year only styling model. The 1959's were totally different.

reminds me of the checker taxi

Thought that too. Wonder if that was the design they copiedĀ

It's very interesting, but I don't see anything weird about the cars.

Definitely weird, these are obscure and strange oddities from a strange time in history.

It's pretty fucking weird that they made this in 50s-60s China
