So, are the roads just going to be horrible forever?

Driving a car in this city is becoming increasingly untenable with the state of the roads. I have reported potholes to 311, only for them to be patched so badly they end up becoming new craters or pop up speed bumps. Certain stretches of road like Ross, McKinney, and Henderson are in such disrepair that driving on the surface of the moon is smoother.
I implore my fellow residents to contact the city about road conditions. I recently had to strategically zig zag across the city transporting a friend post surgery; so he wouldn’t be in pain from the bumps. It is insane to live this way.

That’s why half the population drives pickups
TransportationEng@reddit
Switch to Live Oak. It's gorgeous.
Quirkybeaver@reddit
Don't Ross my Live Oak!
TransportationEng@reddit
Sorry. I use both. There is a project planned to put bike lanes on Ross.
PalpitationFrosty242@reddit
Agree, I'm 100% more relaxed the second i get on Live Oak
NegotiationSalt666@reddit
That apartment complex on Live Oak and Collett i fear is going to make traffic a lil worse once it opens.
Glad_Air8204@reddit
I was so happy when they got done with the construction, it’s amazing
TransportationEng@reddit
I was shocked that they did it with high early strength concrete. It was the fastest I had seen a paving job completed.
(They didn't touch the utilities so there may be busted mains in the future.)
mtfw@reddit
Shhhhh don't tell everyone!

Your local government at work 😂
yarmulke@reddit
Use the dart and vote for policies that will increase funding for the dart.
Ill_Primary_7203@reddit
Until the dart has actually reliable options to get around this won’t do anything. We got stranded for 55 minutes until the next train in a torrential thunderstorm at a station with no recourse last week. Had to call an uber to rescue us.
RaccoonAwareness@reddit
I stopped using DART because I was tired of arriving at work frazzled from the shitty speaker music and reeking of vape
Bodwest9@reddit
You get an award - and yes, using your phone without headphones public is socially unacceptable. If you down vote this you should might want to brush up on your etiquette and being more considerate of others.

Thank you! :)

But how else will people complain that $6 diesel for their Dodge Rams during a Trump Administration is Biden’s fault?
OutrageousQuantity12@reddit
I haven’t seen diesel prices anywhere close to $6, it’s right around $3.10 from what I’m seeing online right now

Bros never heard of using hyperbole for comedic effect
OutrageousQuantity12@reddit
If there was a joke there I’d agree it’s hyperbole for comedic effect, but there isn’t, so I didn’t
yarmulke@reddit
It’s okay, we can’t all have good senses of humor.
OutrageousQuantity12@reddit
If you think that’s a joke, I’m sorry for what you consider humor
yarmulke@reddit
Cool story, but at least I’m not taking a comment made in jest too seriously
OutrageousQuantity12@reddit
Again, if that’s supposed to be a funny comment, I feel really bad for anyone who finds it funny.

You just dont get it. We MUST send billions to foreign countries. M U S T
IfitbleedWecankillit@reddit
Dallas is sending billions to foreign governments? 👀
Replies_In_Disguise@reddit
Millions.* Yes.
IfitbleedWecankillit@reddit
Okay well that’s a little different.🫤
Which ones? Just curious because this never comes up at council meetings.
Replies_In_Disguise@reddit
Texas supports Isreel by routinely buying Isreel bonds annually. Especially 2015 onward.
IfitbleedWecankillit@reddit
Does the city of Dallas do this as well?
Replies_In_Disguise@reddit
What? No. Where do you think funds for roads come from? For Dallas roads to be improved, we need state and federal funding. Thats how infrastructure funding works.
IfitbleedWecankillit@reddit
With a 5 billion dollar budget does the city actually need additional funding to repair roads?
SleeplessInPlano@reddit
Yes lol.
Replies_In_Disguise@reddit
Absolutely… Nearly(if not) all major cities rely on state and federal grants/funding for infrastructure projects. Most of the revenue generated locally in Dallas is through tolls which then gets appropriated to paying off those giant toll roads and not to street maintenance and repair.
My larger point is we need to be funding state infrastructure from a federal level by not sending billions to foreign governments. From a state level, we should not be buying foreign bonds and instead investing in our own cities.
IfitbleedWecankillit@reddit
COD doesn’t get money from the toll roads. Most of the city revenue is from property and sales tax, then some from other sources such as water revenue and permits as well as others. The city did at least two big bond packages that I can remember which were to prioritize street replacement/repair but obviously were only utilized where the large majority of tax revenue comes from… well a few other places too.
While your point that we should prioritize funding for local needs is valid… your facts are bad
Replies_In_Disguise@reddit
We’re on the topic of infrastructure…. Im not talking about overall revenue. Please use some context clues when having discussions.
IfitbleedWecankillit@reddit
Revenue = funding = infrastructure repair
Abbott or Trump sending money to Israel ≠ city can’t get its shit together and fix a street
Context mmmkaaay
Replies_In_Disguise@reddit
Using funds, appropriated for Isreel both federally and statewide, to fund roads and infrastructure is a clear cut, reasonable, and realistic way to fund road repair and maintenance.
All you have done is argued semantics and said Dallas needs to be a better budgeter. You live in idealism land. Yes, ideally the city puts funds up for the roads, but in reality, they dont and WON’T. So, you need a real solution, not just blabbering about how it ideally should be.
Funding for roads and infrastructure, by and large, comes from federal and state funding. It doesnt matter if you think it should be that way or not. Thats how IT IS.
IfitbleedWecankillit@reddit
I’m sure you’ll solve it… now pipe down Timmy
Replies_In_Disguise@reddit
Yikes.
kamon405@reddit
You make my head hurt
rmcswtx@reddit
It's that way throughout the Metroplex and when they finally get the roads completed, then they will have to repair all the issues and potholes that have cropped up.
Fournier_Gang@reddit
Yep.
The extreme weather (heat, torrential rains, freezes) wrecks havoc on the roads. Plus, everyone driving gigantic SUV/trucks further puts a tremendous amount of stress on the infrastructure as well.
No_Locksmith9690@reddit
Yes,and part of the problem is that in the 80s Dallas cut back on maintenance of everything and we can't even play catch up these days.
Fiss@reddit
Yes and that’s true for all of America. Every city/ state wants to grow and build new roads but no one wants to maintain the infrastructure. The U.S. has a serious problem maintaining roads and bridges in this country and it’s at a dangerous level.
PullFires@reddit
I wouldn't put that on all of america. It's the big cities with all the extra vehicle traffic where road conditions are the worst.
jesuisunvampir@reddit
I was surprised by how nice Denver roads were when I drove there.. all that weed tax money getting put to good use.
SuretyBringsRuin@reddit
Yes. It’s just getting worse. Avoid Ross.
ConstructionNo1038@reddit
Ross is AWFUL. I think it might be my least favorite street in the city, and of course my kids’ daycare is off of it so I find myself on it way more than I’d like. I think I would rather deal with a parking lot on Central than having to take Ross.
I used to just grumble about it but recognize that any serious repaving is going to be a huge and very painful inconvenience, but I have gotten over that. It needs to be done.
Adultery@reddit
Putting tax money toward infrastructure isn’t sexy so no one does it
Legitimate-Focus9870@reddit
Ewww why fix something when we can use our tax dollars to pay billionaires for new toll roads?
bebopgamer@reddit
Taxes?! How dare you suggest such government tyranny! The free market will provide a solution if we just get rid of pesky regulations.
happy_puppy25@reddit
Putting it to NEW infrastructure is, maintenance is not
funkngonuts@reddit

gmatocha@reddit
Yes because the alternative is eternal construction.
arlenroy@reddit
I was just having this conversation with a coworker, we will be in a state of constant construction, at least in the metroplex, because we're in a state of constant migration. The more people we have, the more roads we need, the more roads we have the more maintenance work we need done. Past couple weeks my morning commute has been a real pain in the ass, 635 going west from 75, the 35 south exit has been closed off, along with the lanes leading to that exit, for road repairs. I will admit now the road surface for that transition is pretty damn smooth.
Used_Gift8645@reddit
Oh, we’ll have that too… but also terrible roads forever.
Zhombe@reddit
The people who pay for pothole repairs drive big ole SUV’s with air ride suspension. Drive a Yaris or a Prius? Welp, most small towns in Texas curb approaches aren’t even made for you.
Figured this one out a long time ago.
The secret is if it blows a state troopers suspension or tires it’s getting fixed. If it doesn’t affect anyone in power or with power; welp. Hands in the air waving non-specifically and pointing at bootstraps.
bkharmony@reddit
Yes but also yes.

Look_b4_jumping@reddit
Try driving in New York city. You will appreciate the roads here.
bluechip1996@reddit
Literally impossible to answer this without getting political. The cities, state and counties have far far more important grifty stuff to get to before roads.
jabdtx@reddit
I don’t remember a single thing from Poly Sci 101 besides the professor on day one defining politics as the distribution of things of value.
In the US and probably most of the world, a relentless pursuit of applying our collective abilities, including any and all medical and technological breakthroughs, towards the betterment of all citizens is absolutely not on the fucking menu.
Not_Associated8700@reddit
Welcome to the big city. It has and will always be. Roads be dammed, we need billionaires.
PerfectHandz@reddit
Have you ever lived anywhere where the roads were actually bad? Go drive around Shreveport for a day and come back with some new found appreciation.
Broad_Mushroom_8033@reddit
Where I used to live they just closed streets down, some for years/indefinitely
Furrealyo@reddit
This.
New Orleans roads make Dallas roads look like the autobahn.
Past-Contribution-22@reddit
Just convert the roads to fall padding and start flying the quadcopter hexacopter flying cars like 4 ft above roads. Someone make a proposal to government through company. Politicians love to look good from others’ work. If everyone benefits…who cares?
Fair_Willingness3937@reddit
You must be new to tx.
23mou-sapnu-puas@reddit
Who’s gonna fix them? They chased all the hard working people out of town towards the border.
tristand666@reddit
Just think of it as an opportunity for some pothole art.
Seriously, the city uses bond debt to perform delayed maintenance since it seems they never considered the ongoing costs of building anything. They are so beholden to debt, they will never get from underwater.
BRob504@reddit
They only bow to the God of the Altima. For the rest of us, we shall suffer bent wheels and blown tires.
So let it be done.
Sea_Of_Phones@reddit
Unfortunately they only get fixed once the neighborhood has been 100% gentrified (at least most times)

Narrator: “The answer was yes the roads would be horrible forever”
James-the-Bond-one@reddit
I remember returning from a party in the early morning through an empty road in North Dallas, zigzagging to avoid potholes in the damaged pavement.
Soon enough, from half a mile behind me, a police cruiser lit up and reached me, suspecting me of drunk driving. Luckily, I was as sober as a rock, and they laughed when I explained the reason for my unsteady driving.

Additional-Sky-7436@reddit
When you have 10,000 miles of roads some of them will always need some repairs.
Realistic_Author_596@reddit
What do other countries do that are bigger than the US like China? Only speaking of building roads. Stop saying we can’t fix roads. It’s all due to inefficiency and sending taxes 10,000 miles away instead of using them here to constantly keep up with roads. Third-world country standards.
Additional-Sky-7436@reddit
Show me a 40+ year old road in China that is in better condition than the average road in Dallas.
Realistic_Author_596@reddit
Literally everywhere. Just go and research China and their infrastructure. The average road in Dallas is crumbling and never fixed. So sad! China is better in every single way infrastructure-wise and that’s just a fact. I’m sorry to tell you.
PassengerOk7529@reddit
Move out of the city. It will never get better
Relative_Lie_9458@reddit
You must have just moved here. Welcome to Dallas. Watch out for potholes, pedestrians, and folks who cant drive.
Fatman214@reddit
Better go to Carrollton or something if you want good roads, because Dallas doesn't care lol
kamon405@reddit
Ngl, I live jn dallas and I am visiting OKC right now. Why tf are Oklahoma roads better than DFW?

It’s so random too. There’s a good stretch of Preston Rd, but the parallel Monfort Rd might as well be an off road course

Yes. No state income tax, heavy 18 wheeler routes, heat and foundation breaking. Unless you live in a high property tax neighborhood, you might as well buy one of those high risers monster trucks.

As long as there is construction going on in the neighborhood the roads will not get better. It’s the heavy trucks bringing in building and construction materials that tear up residential streets.

ConcreteRocket@reddit
It’s ridiculous. I had to replace two tires due to a pothole that jostled my car in a way I have never experienced. I was going the speed limit. Discount tire was packed - the guy helping me said Dallas roads are great for their business
