hi there, an aussie here.
i have a friend who i am doing a snack swap with. What are some iconic uk snacks to request that i wouldnt be able to get over here?
BigJim_21@reddit
terrys chocolate orange, cadburys (its a british brand but idk if you lot have them in australia), hobnobs
idk_617@reddit (OP)
we do! i love them but they are $8 aud
idk_617@reddit (OP)
terrys i mean
BigJim_21@reddit
8 dollars for a terrys chocolate orange is WILD
moriyah@reddit
Percy pigs Irn Bru Prawn cocktail crisps Tunnocks - teacakes, caramel wafers and caramel logs Caramel digestives
That's what I remember really missing when I was in Aus, couldn't find them anywhere
mydearivy@reddit
You can get Irn Bru and Tunnocks caramel wafers in both Coles and Woolies, so I’d recommend avoiding those two.
Fun_Cheesecake_7684@reddit
How are you guys set for Hobnobs?
Flat_Scene9920@reddit
I think this may have made my top 10 of sentences that leave you feeling loved...
Tylerama1@reddit
Definitely saw them in Woolies when I was last there, but this was 2016.
me_version_2@reddit
They still sell them.
Wallygonk@reddit
Must be the chocolate ones
Fun_Cheesecake_7684@reddit
Won't they melt in the Australian heat?
MolassesInevitable53@reddit
They do have fridges in Australia, you know.
Fun_Cheesecake_7684@reddit
Do they in the customs warehouses?
MolassesInevitable53@reddit
Good point.
idk_617@reddit (OP)
at this time of year, absolutely
Fun_Cheesecake_7684@reddit
When I lived in South Africa, we couldn't even drive it home from the shops. Mum used to make us eat it in the store after the checkouts!
KaleidoscopeFrosty41@reddit
Heavy on the pickled onion monster munch crisps
Turbulent-Many-4312@reddit
Twiglets. (And pickled onion monster munch, but that goes without saying).
Dodo_uk@reddit
Hob nobs (chocolate!) and marks and Spencer Christmas pudding.
Bad_Combination@reddit
Tunnocks tea cakes or caramel wafers. NikNaks. Scampi fries. Ham and mustard or beef and mustard crisps.
New_Pop_8911@reddit
Beef and horseradish crisps are one of my favorite since branigans no longer exists. Think it's the Real brand that does them.
Bad_Combination@reddit
Real does Ham and Coleman’s mustard!
New_Pop_8911@reddit
Oo haven't spotted those. Their salt and vinegar are one of my favorite as well
Bad_Combination@reddit
Had them in a pub yesterday, was my first experience. Not as hot as Brannigans tbf but still good
New_Pop_8911@reddit
When I worked in a pub I'd buy a box of the salt and vinegar ones from the crisps man who came once a fortnight, my daughter was diagnosed coeliac around the time they started selling them and they are gluten free. Not worked there a few years so stopped bulk buying them and lost track of flavours beyond what we could get then. We always had branigans ham and mustard
BreqsCousin@reddit
The thing is that we don't know what you have and what you don't have.
Do you have custard creams?
aeoldhy@reddit
More importantly do they have the chocolate covered custard creams they do in M&S that are possibly the most addictive substance ever made?
Krzykat350@reddit
Huh what now. Let me get my coat I need to see this.
idk_617@reddit (OP)
only a crappy aussie version 😅
BreqsCousin@reddit
The advice I'd give is not to send things that feel fancy but things that feel basic and bog standard and like your granny would have them in her house.
The difference in what is considered "a staple, so basic you don't even think about it" is what I find culturally most interesting.
magicpjj@reddit
Terry's chocolate orange, pickled onion monster munch, frazzles
Tylerama1@reddit
That's a fair shout.
me_version_2@reddit
They sell pickled onion monster munch in Oz. (In Coles and Woolies)
New_Pop_8911@reddit
I like the mint chocolate orange, can you get those there?
me_version_2@reddit
I’ve not seen the mint one.
magicpjj@reddit
Nice one, no idea what's sold in australia, just naming quality british snacks
UnpredictiveList@reddit
Chocolate oranges are in Oz by the way
magicpjj@reddit
Nice one, no idea what's sold in australia, but just naming quality british snacks!
fuckinyaldi@reddit
Polo mints, daim bar, sherbet fountain, wine gums, walkers toffee.
-Londoneer-@reddit
Prawn Cocktail crisps
iamthefirebird@reddit
Something blackcurrant flavoured, if that's not a thing where you are. I know they don't have blackcurrants in the US, at least; it's not the only reason I'm glad I'm not American, but it's on the list.
elbapo@reddit
Twiglets. Cadburys chocolate. Terry's chocolate orange. Lots of flavoured crisps. Pork scratchings.
LaraH39@reddit
They have Cadbury and it's better.
elbapo@reddit
Not if it's that filth made in new zealand it's not
LaraH39@reddit
The Cadbury made in NZ is delicious.
elbapo@reddit
Hmm it was pretty poor although that was ten years ago when i lived there. Far more corn syrupy than the uk version and far less cocoa. Not touching that when there's whittakers
idk_617@reddit (OP)
no wayyy i love uk dairy milk way better then aus one
Tylerama1@reddit
Aus Cadbury is a different fornulation for heat stability I understand ?
idk_617@reddit (OP)
yep! it does
LaraH39@reddit
Yeah? lol The quality of ours has gotten really poor in the last ten years. You might not like it any more. But that's a good reason to all for some! You can compare!
idk_617@reddit (OP)
yeah its been about 4 ish years since i had the uk one so maybe
neityght@reddit
Do you not have punctuation in Australia?
TeacupCollector2011@reddit
They seem to have gone missing around the world.
magicpjj@reddit
A legit old school papershop pick n mix
UnpredictiveList@reddit
They love drumstick sweets like the squashies, and galaxy.
Our dairy milk cadburys shit is better to, there’s has something to stop melting.
Lopsided_Soup_3533@reddit
I honestly think asking in an Aussie sub for any expats suggestions as people who moved to Australia will have a better idea about what Australia doesn't have that they miss
idk_617@reddit (OP)
i am going to do that as well
Adorable_Past9114@reddit
Kendal mint cake, marmite
qqaliqq@reddit
Beef hoola hoops and Worcester Sauce French Fries
MolassesInevitable53@reddit
Penguins. Similar to Tim Tams. So you can compare.
Tylerama1@reddit
Penguins are 90% of a Tim Tam in my opinion. Waitrose now sell Tim Tams in the UK.
Hankstudbuckle@reddit
I picked some up in Tesco the other day.
MolassesInevitable53@reddit
I definitely prefer Tim Tams to Penguins - I am a Brit who emigrated to NZ. I thought it might be interesting for OP's Aussie friend to compare them.
oxgillette@reddit
Trader Joes and Target have chocolate oranges very similar in taste to Terry’s near to Christmas - dark at TJ, dark and milk and white and popping candy at Target.
Tylerama1@reddit
Is there Trader Joe's in 🇦🇺
me_version_2@reddit
No
me_version_2@reddit
Smiths Square Crisps Skips Beef and mustard crisps Percy Pigs Caramac Walnut Whip Squashies Drumstick Flavour (that’s not chicken btw) Mini choc covered Swiss rolls from M&S (also mini jaffas in the same range) Giant Buttons Liquorice allsorts with the pink and blue jellies
For the record you can get: Terrys choc orange Pickled onion monster munch Caramel wafers Choc covered hobnobs All at Coles and Woolies - some are in the international section - most are not.
Tylerama1@reddit
As others have said Twiglets, Monster Munch, Percy Pigs, those M&S chorizo flavoured peanuts 🤤 salt and vinegar crisps are not special cos they have those in Aus. Tunnocks caramel wafers
_Beautifully-Broken@reddit
Jaffa cakes
Boring_Bastard_72@reddit
Kendal mint cake, jaffa cakes and Cabury mini eggs when they come out.
idk_617@reddit (OP)
I LOVE MINI EGGS
WeeRower@reddit
Jaffa cakes
MsLuciferM@reddit
Anything from Tunnocks
Outrageous_Giraffe43@reddit
This is correct. Tunnocks Caramel Wafers are easily accessible and won’t get squished too badly on the journey.
Peanut0151@reddit
I have a standing order when I visit my daughter in South Australia: prawn cocktail crisps
Help_My_Face@reddit
Scampi fries
Breakwaterbot@reddit
Isn't the idea of a snack swap that you let them choose?
idk_617@reddit (OP)
probably ahaha he said give him some ideas
vctrmldrw@reddit
A decent bacon butty.
