I have an old ryzen 5 3600x and 32gb DDR4 RAM just collecting dust. Thinking about making a SFF NAS machine. Is it as simple as just mobo + PSU + storage?

I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube vids about self build NAS machines. What I’m not sure of is if this CPU is up to the task? I’d be running it for primarily cold storage but would like to toss some beefy HDDs in there and rip my DVD collection to have on hand as in a plex setup as well. What am I missing here? Or is it really that simple?

Intel chips are much better for these kind of things. A $30 Pentium gold can handle 2-3 4k-1080p transcoding with plex via quick sync, and embedded N100 is great too for smaller builds. If you use AMD chip, more than likely soon or later you will add a small Intel ARC anyway.

You need a GPU of some sort for transcoding. I run an Unraid servers just with a 5600G, but an Intel CPU that supports Quicksync would have been the better option for me. I got a motherboard with 6 SATA ports, but in order to keep all 6 active I had to forgo using any sort of M.2 storage.

I’ve got an old 3050 that I got for like $40 at a flea market that I’ve just used for testing an old motherboard. Think that would work?

Yeah that is perfect for plex/jellyfin. When I was building my NAS two years ago even a basic Nvidia card was north of $150 CAD so I just opted for the iGPU solutions.

Depends on what the server is for but you would need some kind of small GPU as the 3600x doesn't have an igpu. Especially if you wanted to do Plex or jellyfin

More than enough GPU. Essentially you would just need it for display and transcode which are not that demanding
