Hey guys, new to the turbo world, this is my project car, a 1.5jz e36 sedan.
This sound started when i was mid pull at redline, i think i was a little bit late on my oil change, would that be a reason for anything to fail?
My mechanic told me you can never be sure until u open up the engine and find out, so im currently waiting to save up sone cash to properly rebuild if needed, but he told me its probably a rod bearing from his experience.

Sell that car bro that engines gone

How did you come to that conclusion?

I’m gonna amend my statement so people here don’t think I meant that quite so literally. Lol. I was mostly saying that because it does sound like a rod knock. But in all reality… how tf do I know it’s not a horribly loose lifter. How do I know it’s not a headlight banging around in the bumper due to vibration. I don’t have much info to work with to begin with here so it could be a wide range of things

Rod knock. Your bearings got fucked.

Could you estimate the parts cost ?
ducksthrowaway1@reddit
It really depends. How much boost are you running, is the crank shot, what quality of bearings (maybe all depending on how much stuff went through oil system), connecting rods. Bro honestly it’s hard to say. You gotta open it up. At the very least an oil pan gasket and a bearing kit. Anywhere from $100 to basically building a new engine from scratch so whatever the car cost. You’re probably better off selling it if you aren’t comfortable rebuilding a JZ. Having someone else do it will be even more expensive.

Sounds like rod knock. New engine time.

Sounds like a rod, but I'd check all the valvetrain first since that should be a lot easier.

you can at the very least drop the oil pan yourself to confirm any damage. I would probably start there.

is it manual? sounds like it could be clutch chatter cause i know a turbo would spin after a certain rpm not right away
notbargos@reddit (OP)
It does have chatter from the trans, but this is from the engine. But some of the chatter in the vid i guess is from the trans.
Only_OnTuesdays2@reddit
cause mine made that noise too.

mine made a chatter like that when my water pump pully gave out! if you can hear it more towards the engine and know the difference! legit mine made that before my water pump failed ( literally had to fix it this week)
