? about tipping for Baylor, Scott, and White's valet service

I am undergoing cancer treatments at Baylor, Scott, and White and they have a free valet service available. It is getting more and more difficult for me to walk from the parking garage to where I need to go so the valet service is looking like a great choice. Am I correct in assuming that I need to tip? And if a tip is customary, how much is appropriate?

$5 tip would be appropriate. Or couple bucks on the way in and a couple on the way out.
Majority don’t tip at all.

“Majority don’t tip at all”. You are probably right and that is so sad. Cheapskates who can well afford to tip make me retch.

If this were a restaurant or concert, I’d agree 💯, but to assume people going to a hospital are cheapskates with financial means is ludicrous. BSW accepts MedicAid, patients who don’t have the means to pay for treatment. They aren’t cheapskates, and if they need the valet service to get in and out, they should use it. Those of us who can tip, should.

The VAST majority with a vehicle getting valet service for parking can afford a couple bucks to tip the attendant. In my experience at UT Southwestern as an example, It is rare to see an old car pulling up for valet parking so the vast majority can afford to tip.

I used valet parking with my mom when she could no longer walk that far. I usually tipped $4-$5. It was worth it make her life better.

You have cancer. It is an absurd expectation to require a patient undergoing treatment to walk the unreasonable length required at that location. I’m very familiar with it. Valet parking for cancer patients is a courtesy of the facility and there should be no expectation for a tip… ESPECIALLY considering the cost of treatment. JFC.

“…and there should be no expectation for a tip”. Please see the comment starting with “Former valet here” and possibly soften your stance about tipping ( if one has the means). The valet attendants are not driving up the cost of cancer treatments.

Former valet here.
I would not think any less of a retired/disabled person with mobility issues trying to get in to see their doctor for tipping small or not tipping. Medical care is expensive. But, if you have the means, $2-5 would be appreciated.
It's a different situation than valeting for someone with a fancy car on a friday night at a fancy restaurant or wedding.

Tips are for employees who make less than $7.25 per hour. The valets do not meet this criteria. Tipping is not necessary.

Does your middle name happen to be “Ebenezer”?

I usually tip them $2-5 depending on how long I'm there.

This ☝️. Please tip every time you use the valet parking service. The parking attendants can use it. My wife and I tipped every time for our valet parking at UTSouthwestern for her multiple medical appointments.
Cloudy_Automation@reddit
They seem appreciative to get a tip, so I'm sure there are quite a few people who don't tip. When I broke my ankle, I was so glad they had valet parking, and I did tip them, and they were able to make change for a $20 when I needed that. I mostly have them $5

Uhhhh don’t

Ask your doctor for a form to go get a temporary handicap placard. They are good for 6 months and generally easy to renew for the next 6 months.
And if you end up needing a permanent handicap placard, then let your doctor know for the form also.
It may often be full when you get there, but there may be times when it's not, and you can use the handicap parking.

I am at Baylor frequently and can’t remember the last time I saw a handicap spot available. I don’t even bother anywhere and go right to valet

The valets at BSW are excellent. I am there several times a week and they always unload walkers, wheelchairs, etc and help with getting patients out of cars. I always tip at least $5. They remember me and usually keep car up front. Even if I am just going into pick something up, they let me park at curb and run in-I also tip then as well..
Coldshowers92@reddit
I used to work there and I’ve seen them accept tips. However you are not required to tip so don’t feel bad for not doing so
AssignmentSecret@reddit
My wife forgets to tip bc she never carries cash. They’ll still park your car. They may just park it farther and make you wait few mins longer to grab your car. When I go with her, I tip $5-10 each time and they remember me (probably bc a lot of people don’t tip) and they park the car right out front.
All this to say, you’ll be fine to not tip. If you can, you should though as they don’t make much money.
LalalaSherpa@reddit
I don't believe for a minute the valets routinely punish people by parking their cars farther away.
It has never occurred to me to tip them and my car is always ready to go lickety-split.

I'm sorry. Interesting answers. I assumed that a 1 - 2 dollar tip was ok. I need to wake up
Neither-Effect-6101@reddit
I checked their website and it does not say that their employees are not allowed to accept tips, so yes - tipping will be anticipated by the employees. $5-$10 is typical in most hospital environments.
That said, I have seen valet staff graciously serve customers who do not have the means to meet that cost based on the frequency of their visits or by how broke their illness has left them. If that’s the case in your situation, you can offer them a genuine thanks and a short apology for needing to use their service and being unable to reward them financially for meeting your needs.
