All done with my CPL now with a TT of 223.9, 110.2 being solo, 55 PIC XC, and 10 PIC Night XC.
This milestone has been the greatest of my life. Combinations of family emergencies, long breaks and dealing with grief really shaped my progress, but despite unforeseen delays, I got it done.
My 300NM was filled with lessons, mostly about personal minimums and not succumbing to get there itis, I got pretty much way into the soup and learned what not to do for next time š
Iām starting my Class 4 Instructor Rating training soon, as well as getting my INRAT out the way for now. For anyone on the grind, keep pushing and keep flying, addiction beats talent.
How do yāall think I did on my check ride? Attached for constructive criticism.
Go_Loud762@reddit
Canada still uses Scan-tron grading?
185EDRIVER@reddit
Bro our pilot license looks like a passport and we still have to do full paper navlog and use paper charts for flight test.
Ecstatic_vagabond@reddit
It sounds lame and dƩpassƩ, but it's freaking useful. When I was in the army we used to say, your gun will run out of ammo and your gps will run out of battery. So always had to carry a knife and a map with compas. It's thr same idea here. I still fly around my training area amd beyond with a map.
185EDRIVER@reddit
Cool and some people still call their stock broker on the phone to make a trade. Doesn't mean it is more effective.
You can have mtiple up to date digital devices with their own battery backup, vs your going to buy a new chart every few months and keep your plane full of piles of paper you have to fold up?
Computers never calculate a formula wrong, humans do.
I will trust the navlog generated by foreflight over myself 1000000:1
CAVU1331@reddit
We had 4 iPads freeze in flight while on approach. I will not shit on anyone that still backs it up with paper.
185EDRIVER@reddit
You had four separate iPads freeze at the same time?
CAVU1331@reddit
Multiple times. We donāt trust Foreflight much at all in our flight department. We have backups because of these issues
185EDRIVER@reddit
Yes I have gp and fltplng
FyreWulff@reddit
Computers calculate wrong all the time, which is why planes use multiple computers and a vote system before they actually do something in response to an input or condition lol
185EDRIVER@reddit
Your talking about single upset event level issues and the accuracy requirements of ATP level fight
If you think a single pilot using a calculator and a navlog is more likely to avoid a calculation error then silicon you are litteraly insane.
Besides the most likely cause of an error in a ATP airplane is sensor input errors, not actual silicon adding and multiply numbers wrong.
FyreWulff@reddit
No, I'm talking about how silicon calculates math wrong all the time.
There's literally good chunks of code in the OS for both computers and phones that literally just tries to detect when the chips return the wrong math and correct it.
Parent comment just says they bring a map with them as backup. They aren't using it as primary. But unless you mark it up with a marker, it's correctness is verifiable and unchanging and works all the time. Meanwhile your GPS literally spends half it's time correcting the math it's calculating lol
185EDRIVER@reddit
That isn't what he said he said he's still flies around his training area with a map He didn't say he uses it as a backup He implied he uses it as his primary method You're just reading into it what you want.
And unless you're getting a new map every expiry Technically you're just flying around with an expired map.
Silicon does not make calculation errors all the time these events are insanely rare, If you're speaking of a specific hardware bug like the Pentium Division or it was known and corrected.
Continuing to try and argue that the chances of making a mistake in a nav vlog are higher from hard silicon running the same operation versus a human being using a pen and paper is just ludicrous insane.
Ecstatic_vagabond@reddit
Knowing how to use one tool, doesn't mean you reject all the other tools
185EDRIVER@reddit
You said you still fly with a map
CessnaEnjoyer@reddit
Itās the same here in the US as far as having to make paper logs.
-burnr-@reddit
As a holder of licences in both countries, I prefer the passport format to having to carry both the credit card and paper medical of the US side.
flightist@reddit
Electronic flight test reports are ācomingā.
I figure 2030.
cdnav8r@reddit
PPC flight tests are done electronically. Have been for over a year now.
flightist@reddit
Yep. And some of the TC-bound forms out of AQP are being trialled now too.
Go_Loud762@reddit
I just assumed every western country was well ahead of the US in aviation technology.
Any-Ad779@reddit (OP)
i guess so lol
ThnkGdImNotAReditMod@reddit
I warmed the seat up for you
Pale-Ad-8383@reddit
Crossing out the number while leaving the scan tron values is uselessā¦! Flew in this exact plane fyi
Trickiestclock@reddit
Donāt bother with instructing in Alberta. Go pipeline for some quick and easy hours
kaoandy1125@reddit
You say it like he can just walk into a pipeline job lol⦠pretty sure itās quite tough out there these days
Any-Ad779@reddit (OP)
Why is that? Instructing has always been a dream of mine and it just happens to be the fastest way to pick up hours too. Donāt mean to toot my own horn but Iād definitely not be a ātime builderā instructor because of my own progress and the guidance I needed and didnāt get, and canāt wait to spread the magic of flight and teach to other people as passionate as me.
I also heard pipeline is really hard to get in Edmonton especially and you need IFR and multi both before even being a contender.
Trickiestclock@reddit
Thatās admirable. Enjoy the pattern work and stalls. Pipeline is just a lot more akin to actual commercial operations that youāll experience at 703 and 704s. Instead of the āblind leading the blindā of flight instruction you could build experience flying across the provinces in different weather and airspace. As well as having to exercise the responsibilities of a PIC like finding hangars, fuel, making contacts and booking hotels etc.
Also, you absolutely do not need your Group 1 for a 702 job. Theyāre hiring pilots not people playing pilot. Just show them you know how and can do the job theyāre hiring you for.
Any-Ad779@reddit (OP)
Thank you so much for the info, and I am definitely gonna check out some avenues with pipeline.
dcl415@reddit
Congrats. Keep the good work! Btw the paper forms are going away soon. On my last PPC, the ACP was filling the form in his Ipad
walker172@reddit
Congrats. I have some time with Centennial in GIYT when I did my license in the 90s. Glad to hear sheās still flying!
Any-Ad779@reddit (OP)
no way!!!! yeah sheās up most of the time and one of the best in the fleet.
walker172@reddit
Awesome. GXAA was my solo bird. Not sure if sheās still around.
Any-Ad779@reddit (OP)
GXAA was my favorite! Unfortunately she had an engine failure on a night XC at whitecourt and was totaled. Pilot and Passenger were fine though! And he is currently instructing as a new class 4.
walker172@reddit
Yikes! Glad everyone was alright. Best of luck in your career.
PropWashPapi@reddit
As a CFI in the US, this is pretty cool seeing this process in Canada!
BitDazzling6699@reddit
Congrats! How long did it take you to complete your CPL? (helpful in planning my journey)
Any-Ad779@reddit (OP)
i have the most weird training story so donāt ask me how long lol, but for reference, around 8 months including studying for the written and time building.
BitDazzling6699@reddit
What was your training story because Iām genuinely curious?
Any-Ad779@reddit (OP)
Started my CPL in December 2024 (studying and post PPL flying)
Passed my CPAER on Jan 29 2025
Started dual training Feb 2025
FT ready by mid April 2025, but due to bad weather and instructor delays, pushed it to May 2025.
Passed my initial CPL mock in May, scheduled the Flight test for May 11th
May 10th my sister gets into a severe motorcycle accident in Thailand, and is in a coma, I drop everything, call off work, pack a suitcase at 3am and fly there to be with her and the rest of my family.
May 10th-July 15th 2025, I was in Thailand with family, on a small island where she was working as a Scuba Diving Instructor, and later airlifted to Bangkok, waiting for her to regain consciousness.
July 18th 2025, I was back in Canada and rushing to get myself ready for my FT after 2 months of absolutely no aviation.
July 30th 2025, I pass my CPL flight test, No idea how but I got it done.
July 30-Sep 15 2025, I fly like a madman and finish up the rest of my Instrument, PIC, Night and XC hours.
October 2025, Medical renewed and documentation sent over to TC.
What a journey it has been. Hope this wasnāt TMI, but you asked for it!
BitDazzling6699@reddit
Thatās quite the accomplishment. Great work!
Sorry to hear about your sister. How is she doing now?
Any-Ad779@reddit (OP)
Unfortunately sheās still in a coma, itās day 168 and her body has fully healed physically but her brain has a lot of rewiring to do. Weāre all hoping sheāll recover soon, but also keeping our expectations realistic.
Always wear a helmet guys, the one time she didnāt listen, is when she got unlucky.
Remember, you only need to be unlucky once.
BitDazzling6699@reddit
Praying for her recovery. šæš
sunshinelover82@reddit
Nice work! I also finished my PPL/CPL with centennial. Awesome you're finished, now you can breath a bit. Are you planning instructor rating with centennial as well?
Any-Ad779@reddit (OP)
yes i am, but my hopes of being hired by them arenāt too high, as they just hired 3 new instructors. so a good 1-2 years until they hire again
sunshinelover82@reddit
Yeah, I know they have 3 good class 4's that just started, another one is getting close to graduating, and very little upward movement right now in the industry. A couple of their very good Class 2s are staying put for the year.
On the plus side, a number of pipeline jobs open up early spring, so there is always some movement with us low time pilots in early spring.
The only reason I'm not doing pipeline is because I have kids and a business here. Instructing is the only way for me to gain experience, plus I think I'll really enjoy it.
Any-Ad779@reddit (OP)
damn you know all about us šš this feels like insider trading š But yes the instructors are great and i was training PPL/CPL with the new ones too, I was actually supposed to be in line to finish with them, but because of a family emergency my training was halted for 2 months, and I couldnāt be part of the intake.
sunshinelover82@reddit
I spent 2 years there, PPL/CPL. I was on Jeanette's list for this upcoming intake of class 4 candidates, but I jumped for an opportunity to get my training done quicker in a different school.
Mainly, I wanted to get out of my comfort zone at a different school, different planes, different avionics, different airport etc. I wanted to learn!
I know most of the instructors and candidates, as well as your examiner well enough, I really like centennial and I think they do a phenomenal job. I need to get this done faster, and also felt I was too comfortable there.
Any-Ad779@reddit (OP)
Thatās great man, small world huh. Glad I wonāt be having to compete with you for the Class 4 Intake in November because iām an international student and canāt switch schools as easily š
sunshinelover82@reddit
Ahhh, too bad, we'd have been partners in doing our class 4! Aviation is a very small world, have to make sure to have a good reputation out there!
I've already started training, its tough but I know it will get better. The industry is at a standstill, so basically its reverted back to how its always been lol. What we experienced over the past 2 years was abnormal. Now, as I'm sure youve heard, you need to show some multi-turbine time, multi-crew time, etc to get noticed at Encore
No-Foundation-8034@reddit
Yeehaw person here. What is the "overshoot" maneuver in the circuit? Making sure your circuit / pattern is rectangular & don't overshoot final?
Any-Ad779@reddit (OP)
basically to check your go around procedures, so heāll mention āovershootā and you should: full power nose to cruise flaps straight to 20 and then in stages up pitch for Vy
flightist@reddit
Missed approach/balked landing.
Fit_Homework532@reddit
I actually really like this rubric, would be helpful for a student as a pre-test to point out not just what areas are deficient but also what areas they need to shore up. Going to have to implement this with students who are approaching the checkride. Much easier than a pre-check where you give verbal results.
Any-Ad779@reddit (OP)
yeah! all my instructors used a blank photocopy of this same rubric when doing the mock tests, to keep it as realistic as possible.
WhenInDoubtGoAround@reddit
Hope you donāt mind me asking but what happened on full instrument panel and radio navigation? You were very close of getting a partial on your fligth test if not a complete retest, very close!
Any-Ad779@reddit (OP)
My instructor didnāt teach me how to use the GPS specifically to OBS to the track, so I got a 2 for that, and on full panel I canāt really remember why but I think it was because of an altitude loss.
WhenInDoubtGoAround@reddit
What GPS does your Cessna have? For example, Garmin 430.
Any-Ad779@reddit (OP)
yeah lol, when he showed me how to do it i was like āoh⦠thatās all? i knew that.ā i guess i wasnāt used to the terminology and didnāt want to seem fake like i knew it when i wasnāt sure. and it wasnāt a garmin in that aircraft, itās some weird off brand huge screen GPS with completely different inputs, and itās all touch screen compared to the G430 and G500 iām used to.
Aggravating_You_7226@reddit
Congrats!
Almost_A_Pear@reddit
Hey out of Villeneuve! It was a beautiful to fly no doubt.
norf9@reddit
Just FYI, you blanked out the file numbers, but didn't blank out the bubbles below them.
timelessblur@reddit
FYI you might want to update you blocking out of file number to include the scan tron bubbles as they are in there and easy to recreate.
pilotshashi@reddit
Iām going to do šŗšøFAACAšØš¦= šŖŖ
ryansnipes99@reddit
Congrats!
hzjohn@reddit
Umm How come you have a CFI flair?
Any-Ad779@reddit (OP)
Iām a class 4 student but yeah, changed for clarity.
hzjohn@reddit
Nice! Good luck on your instructor rating journey
