How to find hostels where I can meet other young people?

Any hostel I stayed in, from Portugal to Latvia, it has been full of middle aged indians, arabs, africans and the occasional group of east asian tourists. The one thing they all had in common was barely any English and no desire to socialize with others. Of course that can be fine, but this has been the only type of experience I've gotten so far.
I usually just take one of the cheapest options I can find on booking or hostelworld, but I'm starting to think I'm doing something wrong. Any tips how to find the "typical" hostel experience?

i only had that happening once, and it's because i picked the cheapest. Those people aren't traveling there, they are living there and hostel bed is cheaper than any other housing they can afford.

Yeah, it does look like that.Unfortunately I often see that the more "interesting" hostels are about the same price as a single room all for myself

I’ve made this mistake. I ended up in a brothel once in Sydney.
Definitely read the reviews!

Don't go by cheapest. Go based on reviews Close to city centre or a pub district Hostels with free pr cheap social activities that are mentioned positively in reviews

Definitely read reviews, look for hostels that talk about having a community vibe on their website/listings on HostelWorld. Even if you don’t want a party vibe you’ll enjoy a bit more community

I’ve found the more social hostels aren’t normally the cheapest, as they often offer events, activities etc.
If you’re going for the absolute cheapest you’ll find other travellers who prioritise a cheap bed over anything else.
I find the reviews tend to give a good indication of whether the hostel has a social vibe or not.

Okay, the events are something I haven't really considered before, thank you!
