The normalcy and frequency in which our generation ate tuna sandwiches

Consider the last time you actually saw (or smelled) someone bring in a tuna sandwich to work, school, anywhere really. We really were out there eating luke-warm, overly sauced/mushy tuna sammies in our youth.
Steel1000@reddit
My mind was blown when I worked at a shop that put soy sauce in the tuna…sounds weird but it’s amazing.
ManaMama87@reddit
Haha that's what we do in Hawaii. Maki sushi!
Classic_Breadfruit18@reddit
I like to make spicy tuna salad sandwiches. It's kind of a sushi/ sandwich mashup. Tuna salad made with Kewpie mayo, soy sauce and Sriracha. Needs some lettuce and I like sliced cucumbers and sweet peppers with it.
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit
my husband adds coffee grounds to our tuna, and i know what you're thinking, but try it 😋
pushdose@reddit
I’m sorry, what?
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit
just a pinch, like pretend it's pepper! it isn't going to make your sandwich taste like a mocha frapp...it's just black coffee grounds, and it is just a teeny hidden flavor in there that is weird and good 😂
FallingBackTogether@reddit
I do that! It's so good!
SassySweetSorceress@reddit
It’s probably good! I’m going to try that one day.
My husbands family puts white distilled vinegar on their tuna sandwich & ever since I tried it I haven’t gone back - just adds to it!
skeptical_hope@reddit
oh I bet that slaps! Umami!
Lucky_Louch@reddit
the best ones sat in our backpack for half the day getting nice and warm too. Hot Hot tuna!
StandardStrategy1229@reddit
Oh hell no. FAQ that! Never, not once.
Sufficient_Stop8381@reddit
I probably haven’t eaten tuna since grade school. Disgusting.
refuz04@reddit
Tuna no crust.
Intelligent-Camera90@reddit
My husband eats tuna sandos all the time.
I don’t eat anything that lived in the water.
LocallySourcedWeirdo@reddit
This is so Midwestern. I bet a fancy anniversary dinner is filet minion.
Intelligent-Camera90@reddit
Ha! We’re East Coast elites!
MaddyKet@reddit
Maybe so, but eating lobster in New England has never given me diarrhea. St Louis? Well that’s another story… ☹️🤣
MaddyKet@reddit
If I was in the Midwest, I wouldn’t eat seafood either. I went against this rule on a trip and paid dearly for it the next day.
Landlocked state? No seafood in my mouth.
Sofagirrl79@reddit
A lot of seafood these days is imported,I live in California and even here most of the seafood at the local grocery stores isn't from California or heck even the Pacific coast.Yo have to live directly next to the coast for the local catch and it's usually twice as expensive as the imported frozen stuff
Cantseetheline_Russ@reddit
It’s still one of the most popular sandwiches at even national chains to this day… so pretty often?
Pizzaface1993@reddit
Lukewarm and overly sauced? Nah. Tuna is dope.
kcchiefscooper@reddit
i still do. miracle whip and sweet relish. hells yea.
come to find out apparently that you aren't supposed to eat it because if has mercury.. so i slowed down on that. but i still love it. ritz crackers and scoop it up!

I love tuna sandwiches! But they're so expensive now. I remember when tuna was $.25 a can.

This post inspired me to have one tonight for the first time in a few months. Threw a little gochujang in there to underscore that it was a 2020s tuna salad sandwich. Shit is 🔥🔥🔥
teriKatty@reddit
Not me I hate tuna. But yea a lot of people ate that. My father still does. I’m more of a grilled cheese or even peanut butter sandwich kinda girl.
QuoVadimusDana@reddit
I mean I'm no Jim halpert but I still eat tuna sandwiches a few times a month.

wrestlegirl@reddit
https://www.reddit.com/r/KitchenConfidential/s/n2G5xc9JHm
It's been a 2 week saga of the quest for the perfect chive dice, a subreddit taking the knife and running with it, cranky people mass reporting the posts especially when they inevitably hit r/popular, and my increasing spite as the chives continue to spill into other subreddits.
Just Reddit stuff, really.
AbsintheAGoGo@reddit
They should make the dailies into jigsaw puzzles, give away as an advent calendar-style event😂 start promos on the sub as many days off between as it lasted- just long enough for the haters to think it's all over🤭

japhia_aurantia@reddit
Same, but tbf I eat them at home or, if they're traveling, toasted bread to minimize squish, and keep it cold. A warm tuna sandwich on soggy bread does indeed sound kinda gross.
VicdorFriggin@reddit
The only difference is I spring for the solid white albacore, and completely pass on the chunk light my parents would buy.
taosaur@reddit
If it's more than twice a week, you may want to read up on the symptoms of mercury poisoning.
raspberrybee@reddit
I also eat tuna frequently. Usually I’ll have it for a lunch sandwich and the save the other half for a tuna melt dinner the next day.
RaygunMarksman@reddit
OP is smoking crack and/or guerilla marketing. I still eat a couple a month and can't be stopped.
AlchemistMustang@reddit

ScreenTricky4257@reddit
I know nothing of tuna sandwiches, but I did eat many tuna fish sandwiches.

FionaGoodeEnough@reddit
Same.
Usirnaimtaken@reddit
Absolutely the same.
Entire-Order3464@reddit

Ayanok@reddit
Tuna is foul, when people opened that in the lunchroom… it made me want to puke lol
silver_tongued_devil@reddit
And your grandfather had pimento bologna sandwiches or just strait tomatoes on wonder bread.
Each gen had our cheap thing. (I am now allergic to both tuna and peanut butter so, yeah, only happy memories for me).
dirtyracoon25@reddit
More people eat tuna now than used to when i was growing up. It's incredibly healthy.
gottarespondtothis@reddit
Aside from the mercury anyway. But IIRC even with the higher levels in albacore you’d have to eat a significant amount everyday to see adverse effects.
Classic_Breadfruit18@reddit
I don't believe there is any amount that causes adverse effects. It's an urban myth. I live in Hawai'i and tons of people here literally eat fresh tuna almost every day. Not some small 3 oz from a can either, like 6 or 8 ounces a day. No one has birth defects, no one has mercury poisoning. I have heard that the selenium naturally present in seafood binds to and totally negates the mercury.
Accomplished_Book427@reddit
I was obsessed with tuna sandwiches as a kid. My kindergarten best friend and I both came from poor families so our respective birthday "treat meals" were always tuna sandwiches. With MAYO not miracle whip shudder
Sidetrackbob@reddit
I have been vegetarian for a year almost and was for about a five year stretch once before, but pretty much any time I wasn't vegetarian, I ate a ton of tuna. Being a broke mofo from the northeast, I bought many a can of 79¢ tuna. I have read due to my neurological issues that apparently the cheapo chunk light is actually better for your nerve health than solid white albacore surprisingly.
quarterman5050@reddit
What's really become rare is bologna sandwiches. Tuna sandwiches are still relatively common.
Turbulentshmurbulent@reddit
And then the news report came out stating that rat hairs and roach legs were found in tuna and my mom never bought it again.
ihatecatboys@reddit
I will proudly state that I have never had a tuna sandwich or a tuna casserole in my life--and I have no intention to start.
Scrotchety@reddit
Isaac Newton died a virgin and was said to be extremely proud of it. My pity and sorrow for one of history's greatest minds to forever be closed off from one of life's joys now pales knowing that you shan't ever Know a tunafish sandwich, which is better than sex
elphaba00@reddit
When I was in college, one of my friends would make tuna helper on Sunday nights as her comfort food. She asked if I ever just craved it. Nope. Not ever.
cellrdoor2@reddit
They probably grew up eating it and happened not to initially hate it. My mom made tuna casserole frequently and I didn’t really mind it but my sister hated it. I occasionally think it would sound good and as far as I know my sister has never voluntarily eaten it again since 1989.
KingCarnivore@reddit
Tuna casserole was one of two things my mom knew how to make, it was gross as shit and we would eat it like once a week. Blech
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit
the difference between tuna salad and tuna casserole is HUGE.
LunaSea1206@reddit
I used to make it more regularly, but hubby complicated the recipe. He introduced me to adding chopped up boiled eggs. I ended up loving the addition, but I hate making hard boiled eggs (mainly the peeling part). And I can't just throw it all together in a few minutes like before. I also add chopped up dill pickles, sweet onion, green onion, black olives, dukes mayo, salt and pepper, a ton of celery seed, paprika, dried dill and dried parsley. So much prep work for a sandwich, so I make a large batch and we eat it for a few days and then forget about it until 6 months or a year later and I do it again.
Liathano_Fire@reddit
I see people eat them all the time. I ate them with zero frequency because I don't like them.
If people didn't still eat them, they wouldn't sell them at sandwich shops.
raresteamboat@reddit
I love tuna sandwiches, specially when my mama would make them for me 😊
0905-15@reddit
Hated tuna as a kid because when money was particularly tight we’d often have tuna salad for dinner a few nights in a row.
Is there tuna salad currently in my fridge? Yes, there is. But we never serve it for dinner

I can do a tuna sandwich, but it has to be over the top good. And since iv been a chef for 20 years, pretty much mine is the only one thats over the top good. Jimmy John's back in the day had a decent one, and most high end places Iv worked at just did tuna melts and not sandwiches (where also pretty good too, but not a sandwich)
But yeah a solid tuna sandwich seasoned with tamari, and some fresh sprouts, with a few slices of seasoned English cucumber slices and a very crisp piece of butter lettuce on a very lightly toasted French roll. Just spectacular....
Also if you put eggs in your tuna salad, fuck you.

When I was a kid, my grandfather lived in a big apartment building with a convenience store on the ground floor and when I visited, he'd bring me down there and let me pick whatever I wanted as a treat. Forget ice cream or candy, I'd usually pick their premade tuna sandwich.
AbsintheAGoGo@reddit
The irony of seeing this now, after catching a reel not too much time earlier where a guy was showing what a recent can of Charley the tuna brand looked like now... it was not the stuff of memory. Maybe he did something to it, or maybe it really is that gross looking now, I haven't had it in decades to know the difference.
I can still recall it with perfect clarity, right down to the way the white bread texture was upon sinking my teeth in.
I'm more of a cuisine what I grow or from known providers these days, and I just don't know anyone out deep sea fishing right now, so I'll leave it to you all.

I guess I’ve had enough for a lifetime at this point. I don’t dislike it. One day i just got sick of it and it’s no longer appealing.
Substantial-Ad2200@reddit
I make it still with mayo and celery. But I also do it with roasted red peppers, celery, Kalamata olives, oil and vinegar, salt and pepper.
Substantial-Ad2200@reddit
Did your mom not know how to make good tuna salad?
RavioliContingency@reddit
This title hahahhahahahahah
nochickflickmoments@reddit
I used to put tuna on buttered toast as a treat
Slaphappyfapman@reddit
When you guys are saying 'tuna salad' are you meaning just tuna with mayo??
gladmoon@reddit
LucilleLooseSeal123@reddit
Why do I suddenly want a tuna sandwich (it’s 730 am)
PrecociousCapricious@reddit
If I have bread, tuna fish, and peanut butter... I can survive happily. (And no, I do not mix the tuna fish and peanut butter... I'm just saying 😁)
No_Raisin_250@reddit
Love tuna with onions, hard boiled eggs, salt/pepper and a touch of lemon juice and mustard/mayo with a side of salt and vinegar chips 😋
EvidencePlayful@reddit
Yessss, onions! Onion makes the tuna sandwich for me. Plus, the mayo/mustard combo my KIDS actually taught me that..shockingly. Lol..then again, I introduced all kinds of “unusual” food to them, like pickled beets, okra etc and fresh, hot peppers that they still eat as young adults.
Never knew a tad bit of mustard can kick up most “salad” sandwiches..ham, chicken etc 😆
GhostKingHoney@reddit
Kind of swapped it for tuna sushi
yuccu@reddit
Never touched that cat food - my later boomer/early gen x mom? Loved em.
SirBobsonDugnutt@reddit
Had one in kindergarten and wouldn't try any seafood again for 30 years. I like fish now but won't go near that vile stuff.
ChristyLovesGuitars@reddit
My wife still does. I’ve always found them NASTY. But I don’t like tuna or mayo, soooo..
Reasonable-Wave8093@reddit
not me, ever! I detested it since the womb!
i do eat mashed chickpea “tuna” however
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit
"chickpea 'tuna'" is the grossest thing i will read all week 😂
InternationalRow1653@reddit
There is a pasta & beans tuna pouch I love and the bean in it is chickpea. I'll tell ya what, they are great together. Maybe not if we are imagining our chickpea 'is' tuna but together, works!
cellrdoor2@reddit
It’s pretty good though! The key is not to mash it a ton so it still has texture.
mjh8212@reddit
I used to eat it, it was the only fish I ate now I can’t stand the smell. I don’t know what happened I loved them but not anymore. My husband still loves those sandwiches and the smell just is gross.
InternationalRow1653@reddit
Were? You mean, still are...
VeniceDrumGuy@reddit
Me, last week.
Turdorama@reddit
There is something about the canning process or whatever goes into it that makes me wretch whenever I smell that smell.
It’s not tuna specifically because I’ve had it at a restaurant and it tastes pretty similar to other fish.
I’ve also had canned chicken which gives off that same rancid smell.
I honestly prefer the smell of wet cat food than that tuna can smell.
HermioneMarch@reddit
I eat tuna often.
karatechop97@reddit
When was the last time you ate ham salad though?
bluetubeodyssey@reddit
Or deviled ham, omg so good. But the price has gotten so expensive, and for such a tiny can!
karatechop97@reddit
Basically same thing as ham salad right?
bluetubeodyssey@reddit
I think they're pretty similar, deviled ham just uses spices while ham salad uses mayo?
tgerz@reddit
Have you had a tuna melt on sourdough?! That shit is delicious!
Swayze_Castle@reddit

MotherofaPickle@reddit
They’re my go-to “lazy lunch”. I usually keep a can or two of tuna around for emergencies.
Reminder: put cheap-ass tuna on the grocery list and also boil some eggs. 😂
mcjon77@reddit
Damn man, why do you have to mention this? Now you put the thought by having I need to go out to the grocery store to buy some tuna fish to make some sandwiches for either tonight or tomorrow.
One of my absolute favorite things in the world was a tuna melt. I miss how good those things were.

For a while I used to have tuna sandwiches almost every Friday for lunch when I was a child. I don’t remember when it changed. But now it’s once in a blue moon… like maybe once a year.
void_method@reddit
It's better if it's chilled, honestly.
YoshiandAims@reddit
I had to eat two this week as the food bank gave me tuna.
The super finely shredded,no mass, cheap as it gets, tuna. Really, sandwiches were all I can think to do with it.
After attempting a couple dishes where it essentially disappeared. I use chunk tuna for another things... but this really did not stand up to much else.
I see why we had it so much growing up.
Stunning_Radio3160@reddit
I love tuna. But I only make it fresh at home. Not bring it in a container and let it sit there
antsam9@reddit

Salty-Tea6815@reddit
I think OP is referring to the lunch box warm and soggy tuna salad on wonder bread sandwich from the elementary school cafeteria days. All you ppl saying you still eat tuna sandwiches now are surely not eating the same sticky, wet, grayish colored, room temp tuna sandwich that sat in our locker for 4+ hours and left a permanent odor in our plastic rainbow brite lunch boxes!!
limelight022@reddit
I usually make two or three a month so...
lawtree@reddit
Literally every single day for lunch in 8th grade, brought from home and sitting in the locker until lunch time.
threebeansalads@reddit
I love tuna still to this day but I don’t make it like my mom used to. Lol! I hated tuna until I was a young adult and could eat it fresh with veggies etc. warm wet tuna sandwiches in my lunch were the worst but I ate it cause that’s all there was. Oh and an apple. Not these fancy lunches I give my damn kids. For me it was bun or bread one slice of meat and either an orange or apple. Paper bag. Done. When fruit snacks and cookies happened it was a hell of a good time!
southernfirm@reddit
What? Throw in some egg, and make sure you get the good kind packed in olive oil. Mayo, lemon, horseradish, salt and pepper.

What? My husband bought a tuna salad kit at the grocery store 2 hours ago. Canned tuna is a staple in my pantry (I think the kits are over priced but he takes them to work).
monsterlynn@reddit
I still love tuna! Gotta watch what types and brands you buy though. Because of the lead.
A good tuna salad, though? So good. So, so good. But it takes a lot of prep time if you want to get it right. Gotta have some hard-boiled egg, fresh celery and red onion, dill relish, and just the right balance of mayo and mustard.
neckbeardsghost@reddit
I still eat tuna and tuna sandwiches, but the tuna salad is so much fancier now… Lol. Instead of putting pickles in it like my mom did, I use lemon juice and dill, alongside the onions, celery and mayonnaise.
Sometimes I instead throw in some chickpeas, artichoke hearts, olives, and roasted red peppers/sun-dried tomatoes with olive oil instead of mayonnaise. Whatever I have on hand.
It’s still so tasty!
alieninhumanskin10@reddit
