Wilmington NC - boat yard/haulout
Posted by sailorPops@reddit | sailing | View on Reddit | 14 comments
In the spring, I’m going to need to do a haul out and a bottom job on my 30’ sailboat.
Does anyone know of a boatyard that will do the haul out and let me do the work myself in the Wilmington NC area (I’ve talk with a couple of yards, but they won’t let you do the work yourself… you have to hire their people)?
Any help is greatly appreciated

I just splashed after my haul out yesterday. Its a little far from your area but swan point marina in new river will let you do waterver you want in their yard. The manager Gerry is super helpful and knowledgeable about boats and used to work at UNC as a boat safety instructor. I know the yard has bad reviews online but they've had a change of ownership and its a complete 180 from the way it was. Its right next to the new river inlet (I have to warn against using this inlet too. Its high risk on its best day for keel boats) in sneads ferry and the ace hardware nearby has some fiberglass supplies like cloth and west systems epoxy. They also have a brand new travel lift and stands

Thanks. I really appreciate it… I’m going to look into it… I have to be careful because I have a deep draft (5’9”… ugh!) 😊

Theres likely a few yards in that area (Oriental, NC) that will let you.

I saw 7.5 feet from the lift to the entrance. If you stay close to the dock on the right as you enter you should have plenty of room until you get to the transient spots but thats only 5 feet at low tide right next to the concrete pierside. I actually couldn't leave when I tried because my keel was in the mud but they can definitely handle your boat. The day I got there they lifted a Bristol 44

Zimmerman marine in Holden beach does great work and very knowledgeable on sailboats.

Thanks… do you know if they allow you to do your own work?

They’ll allow you to work on the boat but you’ll need to pay for “something” if you get what I mean. They do have storage which is something that you can pay for a couple months of and then head over there on the weekends and do your thing.
You’ll be hard pressed to find any do it yourself yards around here anymore that aren’t thief magnets or hovels.

Thanks. I appreciate the advice… I figured I’d need to pay for the haul out and storage 👍😊

Duck Creek in New Bern. They've got an awesome crew.

I'll second this. Duck Creek is a self service or full service yard, with everything between. They've got good people there if you need to hire them to help you get done. I was very happy with them over the course of several months of work I did there.

Will they let you do your own work? Or do you have to use their crew?

Last I was at duck creek they let you do your own work and were very friendly.
