Seems like something no one but tech nerds will ever use
Bigb5wm@reddit
I think it is really cool
Die4Ever@reddit
It's extremely cool, I've dreamed of this idea years ago but never made it happen
I just worry about the practicality of it in terms of moderating, keeping spammers and trolls away, actually building communities and attracting users, longevity of content storage and keeping seeders for old posts, being indexed by Google, etc
closehaul@reddit
I’ve been using lemmy and it’s pretty good
MegaGrubby@reddit
Right from the bottom of the Lemmy page.
Doesn't seem to be in the same category as seedit then...
Die4Ever@reddit
which Lemmy server is that? https://retrolemmy.com/ for example doesn't have anything like that, most Lemmy servers I've seen don't have any Google tracking in them
MegaGrubby@reddit
lemmy.org
Die4Ever@reddit
https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/list
Or https://fedidb.com/software/lemmy
MegaGrubby@reddit
Is there a site that ranks the lemmy servers? Seems like old school BBS or usenet newsgroups chaos.
throwawayyyyygay@reddit
Sounds like you found a bad lemmy server. But that’s the beauty of lemmy. Choose your own server. lemmy.dbzer0.com is nice
closehaul@reddit
It’s a p2p social network that as long as you’re using the activitypub protocol anyone can host.
light_odin05@reddit
Ok, nobody asked though
IlIIllIIIlllIlIlI@reddit
Damn its almost like we're in r/RedditAlternatives
light_odin05@reddit
Damn it's almost like you could the title of post that's in the subreddit
IlIIllIIIlllIlIlI@reddit
So you agree context matters, but are upset not everyone agrees on your definition of level of context?
light_odin05@reddit
I mean if you're going to be that asinine r/republican is on Reddit. Shall i start spouting right wing Bullshit here because the context is eventually also Reddit?
IlIIllIIIlllIlIlI@reddit
Imagine being so perpetually online you have to make everything about politics, and can't fathom the idea that others dont agree with you who aren't automatically right wing
I kinda feel bad for you now.
light_odin05@reddit
good job deflecting.
but i'll admit you win, i ate your ragebait

In term of decentralization
ActivityPub is the protocol known as the "fediverse", Lemmy and Mastodon are ActivityPub clients
ActivityPub is not fully decentralized, it's a federated design, meaning it's a network of instances, and each instance is just a regular website with servers.
MysteriousYard@reddit
Can someone ELI5 how moderation would work? Some superadmin over all open instances?
MegaGrubby@reddit
Interesting. Does the client show you your data usage? I think that would be a concern for many.
AnarchistBorn@reddit (OP)
data usage of what exactly ?
MegaGrubby@reddit
Since it's peer to peer and you are a network node, at a minimum, it should show how much up/down data app is using. Ideally, you would have control over how much you want to participate in the network (while on screen versus, while in the app versus while the phone is on, etc).
Beneficial_Exam_1634@reddit
I think I remember either Seedit or some other IPFS project.
busymom0@reddit
If it's P2P, does it leak your IP address to others?
IlIIllIIIlllIlIlI@reddit
By definition it would have to unless you're using a VPN.
