Take all the trash and burn it to power steam engines

Canada The USA Sweden Austria Etc.

Lots of ways to harvest caloric energy from waste, and if you were going to mine and burn coal anyway, you don’t even need to be that clever to come out ahead burning waste.

They already do this in Switzerland. Something like 54% of all waste is recycled/composted and everything else is burned to generate power. It's really hard to do correctly though as it generates massive amounts of toxins and pollution. The emissions of these plants in Switzerland are heavily regulated and it's probably way too expensive to exist as a private company without subsidization.
