This is so true. During my most recent rewatch, I was watching with my mother. It was her first time. She asks why Xena makes the sounds she does when killing and fighting. Simple, if she doesn't then the whole scene is unbelievable because sound and facial expression means the task requires effort. Unlike the gloss we get elsewhere, like you said.
