November SNAP benefits may not go out

Because of the ongoing US Government shutdown, millions of Americans may receive reduced monthly food assistance in November- or none at all.

The deadline is October 27 before November payments become $0 for these individuals and families.

Food banks lost their federal funding funding recently.

Yes, which means private donations are needed. My spouse and I donate to our local food bank regularly, and we double it by doing so through my spouse's employer, which provides a 100% match. If you can spare even a few dollars, please consider doing so ASAP. November will be here soon, and the need will be great.

As a food bank volunteer thank you. We've seen increased volume of people coming through to the point we've had to limit what patrons can take
The more we can help our community the better. Volunteer and contribute anywhere you can. You are making a difference for someone

I’m going to sound completely heartless but good.. the country doesn’t give a shit until it affects them. Delay SSA, medicare reimbursements, 4473s, SNAP, HUD, and USDA loans and the government would reopen following an emergency session at midnight on 1NOV. An ordinary citizen doesn’t care a million feds aren’t getting paid.. once they get inconvenienced, then they’ll care.
ionbhawunjo@reddit
Snap and hud aren't conveniences, they are life support for some people

We're going to focus on that one. 😩

I had a boy a few years ago who was always hungry. I would take a bag of baby carrots, sweet peppers, whatever as a snack. He always asked for some. I knew he must really be hungry if he was begging for veggies. I was so happy when he got a job at McDonald's because I knew that would help him.

Royal-Worldliness400@reddit
Pretty sure it’s not adding a few more trillion to the national debt… that’s the hold out but could be wrong, I don’t track politics
Specialist_Stick_749@reddit
That's the rights talking point. The left is attempting to ensure a fuck ton of Americans don't lose access to their marketplace plans by the subsidies expiring and upwards of tripling their out-of-pocket cost.
Right talking points against this are that those on marketplace plans should get jobs. They have jobs. They are either self-employed, or their company doesn't offer benefits to part-time employees, and/or they make too much to qualify for Medicaid.
We do not mandate employers to offer insurance benefits to all classifications of employees. Nor does the offering have to be affordable (usually meaning most of the cost is put on the employee and not shared by the employer).
The other common argument I've been seeing is just get a better job...which has the be the dumbest argument.
Royal-Worldliness400@reddit
Good to know thanks for the summary
Too-Em@reddit
So, as someone whose family depends on SNAP.
1) The republicans are trying to kill every social program they can, SNAP included.
2) The republicans are trying to use the spending bill to cut ACA subsidies which working Americans need.
3) The democrats wont pass the spending bill until republicans agree not to tack ACA cuts to the spending bill.
This sucks. It is hurting people. It will hurt people, horribly. But if the dems give in, it will be another step toward the unfettered ruin of poor and working class America.
I feel kinda like we are looking at this like some people look at the Ukraine war. Why won't Ukraine just seek peace? Simple. Ukraine did not instigate the war. The war can and will end any time Russia chooses to cease its aggressions. Ukraine is simply striving to survive and prevent further harm from Russia, even though this effort is costly to the Ukrainian people. We will take casualties defending ourselves. This is the terrible reality of resisting an enemy that would seek to exterminate or subjugate you.
Specialist_Stick_749@reddit
And the majority of social welfare recipients fall on the rights side but yet they are still too blind to see their party doesnt care about them.
hustle_magic@reddit
This is a well reasoned argument.
neverfearIamhere@reddit
Maybe the party with majority control of all 3 aspects of government should make a deal then, huh?
hustle_magic@reddit
They hold the cards. They have no incentive to make a deal. The government shutdown doesn’t harm them politically. They’re the party of ghouls so everyone expects them to act this way.
This is 100% on the democrats. They may have to compromise so we can get the government working again.
Mochigood@reddit
Why are democrats letting the republicans hurt us? Democrats are supposed to be the grownups cleaning up after the childish break it and then complain about it being broken republicans. Is that what we're saying?

How can you be this uneducated, do we need to bring back schoolhouse rock “I’m just a bill” - I will seriously provide you with the education
2B22@reddit
Do you find the demands of the Democrats unreasonable in approving a new bill and if so why
Responsible-Sundae25@reddit
Yes, I find that any demands from the democrats is unacceptable. Pass the clean CR, that would last 7 weeks. Negotiations from both sides should happen and pass a long term funding bill.
If the GOP were proposing cuts or adds to the CR, I would be here stating the same “call your republican representatives and ask they vote to pass the clean bill
Both parties are fucking us
2B22@reddit
I don't want a clean bill to pass. I rely on food stamps, and am often struggling to maintain access to healthcare regardless of who's in office. I'm sick and tired of Democrats conceding and doing nothing or making concessions that result in us never getting back where we were. Fuck the national debt and fuck anyone in either party that doesn't care about making sure a social safety net exists for all of their constituents. I hope this lasts long enough for people to start realizing the consequences regardless of who is affected, be it my family, yours, your children, or your local politician's extended family.
But of course, Republicans choosing to concede for once would be great too. But it seems we should instead expect the Democrats to be the better people. We always do, and that always works out great. :)
Responsible-Sundae25@reddit
You deserve what you vote for, if you go hungry, your DNC representatives are to blame
Over those 7 weeks, negotiations take place. Both parties will have to compromise for a deal. We act like the ACA expiring is something new. Crazy when the DNC was in full power, they didn’t vote to extend it.
Crazy thought, maybe, just maybe, both parties don’t give a shit about us. Maybe they don’t pass long term solutions so we fight amongst ourselves while they get rich?
2B22@reddit
Yes, exactly, they are to blame. That is unfortunately what we have all voted for, or not voted for..
Yes, over these weeks, negotiations take place, and then we end up with less than asked for, less than we had, or with what we had + caveats elsewhere.
I have no expectations of the Republicans, it isn't hard to listen to them and come to the conclusion that our best interests aren't in mind - the same cannot be said for the Democrats, who as you correctly point out, let these issues retain as a political football to play with (hence the aca expiring and a plethora of other things). So yes, at the end of the day, I don't want them to let something pass. Let things get worse, and hopefully let better people come out on top of things getting worse, who care about the people. If that doesn't happen then it's hard to say we don't deserve it. And being ignorant of things going on doesn't absolve the random ignorant people of deserving it either.
Just shouting to the void
NurseSharko@reddit
Democrats are trying to save your healthcare dumbass
CindysandJuliesMom@reddit
The shutdown is being caused by the failure to extend the ACA subsidy, everything else can be compromised on. The Dems want the subsidy cap to remain as it currently is, the GOP wants to let it expire. By allowing the subsidy cap to expire it is projected health insurance premiums will increase anywhere from 25% to 100%.
So either go hungry for a moment or die without healthcare.
MrPBH@reddit
Alternatively we could keep the government open, SNAP benefits paid out, and retain the ACA subsidy. There's nothing stopping the GOP from just agreeing to help out Americans; they sure talk a lot about helping Americans, so you'd think they'd be down for it.
Responsible-Sundae25@reddit
So the DNC right now is only proposing the funding to retain ACA subsidies, nothing more? No additional pork?
Rods-from-God@reddit
Some folks in some states have been informed that their health insurance premiums will quadruple
>In Clay County, Kentucky, the group found that a Clear Silver plan, which charges that couple a premium of $559 per month this year, will cost $2,736—nearly five times that amount—next year after subsidies expire.
>In Mission Viejo, California, premiums for the same couple’s Anthem Blue Cross Silver plan would more than quadruple, from $516 per month this year to $2,188 next year.
>The same is true in Medford, Oregon, where a Moda Health Silver plan would increase from $622 this year to $2,644.
>In Burlington, Vermont, an MVP Silver plan that costs $602 per month this year will spike to $2,577.
>While these are particularly egregious examples, KFF estimated earlier this month that the average ACA recipient will see their premiums increase by 114% next year, which the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office expects will result in more than 4 million people becoming unable to afford health insurance.

You are a much nicer person than I am. I used to give food banks quite a bit of money every year. I did it ever since I started working, up until the second time Trump was elected. The thought process is: If the population wants to vote for that idiot, either his policies will keep them afloat, or it won’t. If. 1/3 of the pop voted for him, 1/3 of the pop didn’t vote, and 1/3 of the pop voted against him. That’s 2/3s of the pop that deserve to starve if he starts hurting them.
Future_Cake@reddit
No one desrves to starve over not predicting the future well, even if they perhaps should have.
Also...children are not legally allowed to vote. Families with young children are presumably a significant % of food-bank recipients...
GalaxNut@reddit
A lot of people were upset with the democrats and Biden for not taking many of the Trump appointees out of their positions when he got in office. They also did not fix any parts of the system, that is now allowing our checks and balances to fail. We also never heard from Kamala until she was running for president and Biden often complained to this effect. Lets be honest, people voted for Biden during the first run because they hated Trump, not because they were in love with Biden. I think the democrats need to produce a better candidate this time around and I hope the ones that did not vote gave them a wake up call.
DifferentiallyLinear@reddit
I agree and align with the majority of what you said. Biden wasn’t a great president, Kamala likely wouldn’t have been any better than Biden. But both of those individuals were better for us than Trump. What ppl made the leap from hating trump to loving or even tolerating him is beyond me. I say this as a person who typically benefits from trumps policies, which I hate.
GalaxNut@reddit
I was one of those that did not vote… I had a newborn and was in the state of IL… That being said if I was in a swing state I would have voted. It doesn’t mean that there wasn’t this small part of me that felt democrats had this coming. I just want real change so bad. No more band aids and half measures. Sometimes it feels like the system needs to collapse for that to happen. The problem that we are all witnessing now, is that it could actually end up becoming worse. We look at the average age of empires and the United States is right on the line for the average age at which most empires last/fail. Everyone I talk to from multiple political spectrums cannot imagine this country still existing 100 years from now. I don’t think anyone has a good answer for what this will look like. If we took away all the anger points and inflammatory issues, I do know that most people across political spectrums want the same things, everyone just has a different idea about how to get there. And just thinking about any sort of conflict between people breaking out in this country, seems impossible to imagine. But it also now feels so close. Both sides could separate. I know that the average budget deficit for blue states on average is barely over, which is ironic to say the least. If Trump continues to do whatever he wants with congressionally appointed funds then blue states could just withhold federal tax dollars. Maybe thats how we will see it really start. There is just so much to unpack, with the past, present and the uncertain future.
ThrowawayRage1218@reddit
While the schaudenfreude is great as he hurts the people who voted for him...no one deserves to starve.
JiveTurkey927@reddit
The second you type that someone “deserves to starve,” maybe you should pause and take a look in the mirror. You’re the same as them, just with opposite reasoning.
DifferentiallyLinear@reddit
I look in the mirror every day. Which is why I vote and work hard at my life. 2/3s of the country can’t bother to do either. Ppl need to learn from their mistakes. Without consequences how can they?
jmnugent@reddit
I just wanted to say, I totally get where you're coming from (and have the same worries). I had a manager at a previous job that always said something like this ("End Users need to feel the pain of their choices") often arguing that if we just keep babysitting and handholding them, they'll never change their behavior. (For example VIP's who always wait till 30min before they need something to put in a "priority ticket" or expect someone to just run over to their building, etc) instead of planning ahead and warning us ahead.
jmnugent@reddit
I would love to follow that line of thinking (and trust me, I'm often deeply tempted to).
But if you've ever heard (or yourself directly had) any of those apocryphal experiences of:
your interviewing someone (or you are the interviewee) .. and an hour or so prior while in traffic or at some convienence store or etc, you encountered some stranger that was rude (or nice) to you,.. that stranger could then unexpectedly be 1 of the people on your interview board. You just never know.
I remember the last city I lived in,.. I also worked for the City Gov there,. and I remember as I drove around town, to always remind myself to be safe while driving. The bicyclist or pedestrian that I may accidentally swerve to close to or hit,. could be a new employee (or my new Supervisor) or just another city employee on their day off or maybe it's my dentist or financial adviser. You just never know.
Everyone is fighting different battles (that there's no way for me to know). .so I figure if I just follow my instincts and try to "do good",. maybe if nothing else that will set an example others will follow. I do think there's some risk there of "insulating people from the reality of their bad choices".. but I just hope the good I do is larger. Maybe when that person does eventually come back to reality realizing the poor choices they made and also remembers who helped them along the way,. that good karma will come back to me eventually.

Ornery-Atmosphere930@reddit
Some folks have pointed out that theft in grocery stores will increase. Many of us are physically incapable of seeing anyone steal necessities from a big chain grocery store, but we may want to be on the lookout for people trying to rob other shoppers. And if you get your groceries delivered, consider that they might disappear if you aren’t there to receive them immediately. Check your items carefully if you do delivery or pickup to make sure you got all your items.
Please help your local food pantries if you can. Helping each other is how we survive this. The government is no longer spending our tax dollars to help our fellow Americans, so we have to do it ourselves. Stay safe out there everybody.
JackBlackBowserSlaps@reddit
Have the grocery stores started renting cops out as security yet? We hit that in Canada years ago.
Ornery-Atmosphere930@reddit
Walmart has had security (and often a city cop) for years. The other stores really don’t although we noticed that our regional chain store this weekend had an employee up front watching everybody coming and going, similar to a Walmart greeter. That’s new for them.
DeflatedDirigible@reddit
Or maybe this is a good time for those on benefits to develop some prepper skills. Kids can switch to eating oatmeal and parent cook with dry beans and rice. Kids won’t go hungry due to the school meal programs which covers 2 meals each school day and most schools have a weekend program that provides 7 meals.
Everyone on food stamps eats better than me so why should I donate when they waste their money? Someone I dated had food stamps and I made one person’s last for two people the entire month with luxuries like Slim Jim’s for his snacking habit.
ThrowawayRage1218@reddit
Wait wait wait...you're telling me that eating mostly oatmeal and rice and beans helps save money on groceries? Wow! No poor person in modern history has ever discovered that!
Also maybe do a bit of research into the concept of school lunch debt before confidently stating that kids won't go hungry. I've also never heard of a school that has a weekend program providing meals. Summer, sure, not weekends during the school year.
Just because you knew one guy once who wasn't as frugal as he could've been with his food stamps doesn't mean everyone or even most folks on food stamps are this way. "This situation beyond poor peoples' control should force them into what is largely a hobby and an expensive one at that." gtfoh man
Ebscriptwalker@reddit
Wait a second here. Someone you dated got food(so a single person) was getting food stamps. You were using their food stamps i presume because you needed the help correct? If not that's terrible. But im hoping you were just a person in need so I dont have to believe that you were not only leaching off the government, and another person when you didn't need to, just to turn around and bad mouth people that both dont need the assistance and those that do. Which in and of itself is really bad enough dont you think?

Ornery-Atmosphere930@reddit
Yeah, we may switch to pickup. I don’t like to go into the store to shop for a lot of reasons and rely pretty heavily on delivery when my chronic illnesses are being extra, but we can work around that. We have a security system and a bunch of big scary dogs but that only goes so far.
JustSatisfactory@reddit
I was injured in an accident a few years ago so it's hard for me to carry stuff like I used to. I've been getting most of mine delivered since then.
I had someone try to break into my house during the day about a month ago. They covered my doorbell camera and tried to force the front door open in broad daylight before going around the back to try the same. I work from home and hearing someone inside scared them off.
It probably didn't have anything to do with my food deliveries, but it got my anxiety turned up and I started trying to figure out why they would target my house specifically on a street with tons of other houses. Especially since I'm the only one with a doorbell camera, though the camera could be why as well. Maybe they figured if we have a camera, we have stuff worth protecting.

Yet, the community cared for them for the rest of their lives.
And now in the age of AI, here we are struggling with humanity.

42 million people will go without money for food next month (that’s just SNAP). And the USDA also funds Food Banks with SNAP funds so there will be even less. Donate to your local food banks, if you can.

Holding people hostage to get items that should be debated over such as... *checks notes* healthcare.
Their point stands.
Responsible-Sundae25@reddit
Absolutely agree, when the democrats had the opportunity to make a single payer healthcare system, they refused. Look in the mirror at anytime.
Here we are in reality, thank you for saying the quiet part out loud.
ATTENTION ATTENTION We have a confirmed hostage situation. The Democrats per Throwaway is going to hold your SNAP benefits hostage for healthcare subsidies. Don’t worry, they still want you to eat, just not now.
ThrowawayRage1218@reddit
Sorry but did you watch the same ACA debate I did when Obama was in office? They tried to get something akin to single-payer, then Republicans gutted it until it was all but useless.
And the Democrats are the ones holding benefits hostage? Not the party that holds all three branches of government and is planning on gutting SNAP anyway?
We do not sure what country you live in, but it sure ain't the US.
Responsible-Sundae25@reddit
No worries, the least reliable witnesses…let’s just provide you with the facts
Key Periods of Obama’s Presidency Obama’s two terms saw varying levels of Democratic control in Congress, which directly impacted their legislative capacity. Let’s break it down by key periods, focusing on the feasibility of passing a single-payer bill. 1. First Term (2009–2013) • 2009–2010: Strong Democratic Majorities • House of Representatives: Democrats held a robust majority with 257 seats to Republicans’ 178 after the 2008 election (111th Congress). • Senate: Democrats had 57 seats, plus two independents (Bernie Sanders and Joe Lieberman) who caucused with them, giving a functional 59-seat majority. After Al Franken’s contested Minnesota election was resolved in July 2009 and Arlen Specter switched parties (April 2009), Democrats briefly held a 60-seat filibuster-proof majority until February 2010, when Republican Scott Brown won Ted Kennedy’s Massachusetts seat. • Presidential Support: Obama campaigned on healthcare reform but prioritized a market-based approach (the ACA) over single-payer, reflecting his pragmatic governing style. He explicitly stated in 2009 that single-payer was not feasible given political and economic constraints, though he acknowledged its merits in theory. • Legislative Feasibility for Single-Payer: • Theoretical Possibility: With a 60-vote Senate majority for roughly six months (July 2009–February 2010) and a strong House majority, Democrats had a narrow window to pass major legislation without Republican votes, as demonstrated by the ACA’s passage in March 2010. A single-payer bill could have been theoretically possible during this period if the entire Democratic caucus unified behind it. • Internal Divisions: The Democratic Party was not monolithic. Moderate “Blue Dog” Democrats (e.g., Rep. Bart Stupak, Sen. Ben Nelson) and centrists like Sen. Joe Lieberman opposed single-payer, favoring incremental reforms. Lieberman, for instance, killed the ACA’s public option (a government-run insurance plan), a less ambitious proposal than single-payer. In the House, Blue Dogs (about 50 members) were wary of deficit increases and government overreach, making single-payer a tough sell. • Cost Concerns: Single-payer proposals, like those later estimated for Bernie Sanders’ 2016 plan ($32 trillion over 10 years per the Mercatus Center), faced scrutiny from moderates. The ACA, costing $1.2 trillion over 10 years (CBO estimate), was already contentious for its price tag, requiring complex budget reconciliation to pass. • Public and Industry Opposition: Polls (e.g., Gallup, 2009) showed only 40-50% public support for single-payer, with opposition from insurers, hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies. These groups lobbied heavily against the ACA’s public option, and their influence would have been even stronger against single-payer, which would dismantle private insurance. • Outcome: Even with majorities, Democrats lacked the votes for single-payer due to internal dissent. The ACA, a compromise blending private and public elements, barely passed (219-212 in the House, 60-39 in the Senate) after months of negotiations. Single-payer would have required far greater party unity and public support, which didn’t exist.
ThrowawayRage1218@reddit
>Dems only had a six month window in which to pass any healthcare reform, ACA, single-payer, or otherwise
>The gutted-out bill that we did get only barely passed after months
>Single-payer healthcare would've required greater public support which didn't exist (it does now, btw), and greater party unity which didn't exist because Dems aren't a monolith
>"Democrats should've passed single-payer healthcare when they had the chance"
>Democrats are standing firm on government funding so that the ACA can continue without cuts
>Republicans which, again, control all three branches of government drove the budget negotiations until SNAP ran out of money
>Republicans have stated goals to gut both SNAP and the ACA, so we can choose starving or dying of something preventable. Free market, baybee!
>"It's all the Dem's fault that people are gonna starve"
Maybe read your own ChatGPT summary before posting it. You would've caught how nonsensical you sound.
Responsible-Sundae25@reddit
Your argument was that GOP gutted it, read your own post before replying. This is regarding the single payer argument. You are so poor at debating you can’t stay on topic.
6 months is more than enough time to pass single payer option….it didn’t happen and it wasn’t because the GOP gutted it. They literally didn’t have the power. Not even fake power, they were a super minority.
ThrowawayRage1218@reddit
It took "months of negotiations" just to get the ACA, which is what the GOP gutted. Single-payer was a nonstarter because there was neither popular nor political support. And you can't tell me in all seriousness that in the extremely unlikely event that politicians didn't take money from lobbyists, that the second Republicans got back in power that they would have let it stand when they've been trying to claw back the ACA for decades.
Stop letting AI and Fox think for you. Use your god-given critical thinking.
Responsible-Sundae25@reddit
You are honestly a poster child, please keep talking. I beg that you lead a movement, you would be amazing.
You are of such low IQ, you don’t understand what a super majority was. You don’t understand how the democrats fumbled the ball. You don’t understand with a super majority, you don’t need the other party, they don’t even get a seat a the table outside of participation votes.
You move the goal post once the truth was inconvenient. I’m sitting here and telling you, I wanted the single payer, I voted for it through my representatives. The ACA was always and will always be dog shit. You are a non serious person, best of luck.
ThrowawayRage1218@reddit
I am consistently addressing your assertion that people going hungry now is the Democrats' fault because they didn't pass single-payer healthcare in a narrow (by your own ChatGPT summary's admission) six-month window in 2009-2010. For various political reasons. Your assertion is that Democrats right now are going to be responsible for people going hungry. That this shutdown is the Dems' fault and they should capitulate to the Republicans, despite Republicans giving absolutely no quarter, no concessions of their own. And yet...
A+B=C is the same as B+C=A. You know that, right? You...you do know that right now what the Republicans have is a super majority? That you don't need the other party, that they don't get a seat at the table? Which means, and I'm holding your hand here as we walk through this, that the Republicans are responsible for people going hungry. The Republicans would be responsible for people losing healthcare. This shutdown is the Democrats holding what few social safety nets we have. This is, first and foremost, a Republican shutdown. Because they are a super majority. If they wanted us to have healthcare and foodstamps, they could have chosen to give it to us and avoided all of this.
That is my point in all of this. Not moving the goal posts, addressing your original gripe. Once again, stop letting AI do the critical thinking for you.
Responsible-Sundae25@reddit
Lmao how many republican senators are there?
Most would claim 60+ one party senators would give that party a super majority as they can overcome a filibuster.
Btw notice how our prompts aren’t the same, not using ChatGPT. I truly believe at this point you are a boomer. Still believe the youth is watching any news programs. Everyone uses ChatGPT. Lol you are amazing. Can’t wait for this generation to die off
ThrowawayRage1218@reddit
Actually I'm an information professional with a Masters, during which I had extensive training on how misinformation spreads--which would be people like you--and how to combat it. Your post had all of the hallmarks of using ChatGPT, with the exception of the excessive em-dashes but it was in list form (ostensibly; you didn't bother formatting after pasting it), and you included information (they had neither the votes nor the popular good will) which undermined your point ("they should have passed single-payer when they had the chance"). Unless you have an encyclopedic knowledge of the healthcare debate during Obama's first term you would not have been able to reliably produce those numbers off the top of your head so quickly.
And if you notice the only assumption I made about your age was that you, like me, are old enough to remember the ACA debate. Now you refer to yourself as "the youth" and apparently think that 2009 America had any sort of popular support for single-payer healthcare??? Which while I personally have always seen that as an absolute public good, I can recognize the reality that it wouldn't have flown back then.
Also if I was a Boomer wouldn't I be on your side? Wouldn't I also be saying that Democrats should capitulate so that Republicans can continue bullying them into giving up our rights and our social safety nets?
Do better. Stupidity, obviously, is not generational. I'm done with you.

Do you understand what a Clean CR Bill is? I don’t believe you actually know what it is.
Rods-from-God@reddit
The CR defined as "Clean" by House Republicans which kicks the ACA subsidy elimination can down the road until 32 days from now? That one?
Responsible-Sundae25@reddit
So the proposed DNC bill only contains the ACA subsidies, no additional pork, correct?
Rods-from-God@reddit
You didn't answer my question.
Responsible-Sundae25@reddit
I will just post the context
GOP Clean CR and ACA Subsidies: • No Extension Included: The Republican clean CR deliberately omits any extension of the enhanced ACA subsidies. House Republicans, backed by President Donald Trump, argue that including such provisions would balloon the deficit (estimated at $400-500 billion over 10 years for a permanent extension) and distract from the immediate goal of reopening the government. They frame the CR as a “neutral” stopgap to buy time for broader negotiations. • Democratic Opposition: Democrats, supported by the DNC, have blocked the clean CR in the Senate, demanding that any funding deal include a permanent extension of the ACA subsidies. They argue that failing to act before open enrollment (starting November 1, 2025) risks confusion and premium spikes, accusing Republicans of “holding health care hostage” to protect tax cuts for the wealthy (e.g., those in the GOP’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” from summer 2025). • GOP Counterargument: Republicans assert that Democrats are inflating the CR with a $1.5 trillion “wish list” (including ACA subsidies, Medicaid restorations, and immigrant eligibility fixes), which they claim is unrelated to immediate government funding needs. They propose addressing ACA subsidies in separate, post-shutdown negotiations, possibly as part of a full-year omnibus bill. • Political Context: The GOP’s refusal to include ACA subsidies aligns with their broader agenda to scale back health care spending, as seen in the 2025 bill that cut $800 billion from Medicaid and restricted immigrant eligibility for ACA coverage starting in 2027. Democrats view the clean CR as a tactic to delay or avoid addressing these rollbacks, especially with midterm elections looming in 2026.
Ebscriptwalker@reddit
You do realize that 400 billion over 10 years is in the shadows of a bill that has already inflated the deficit by trillions of dollars while cutting medical subsidies and as a cherry on top our taxes just bailed out Argentina to the tune of 40 billion dollars without a single congressional vote. So no we dont want a clean can to be kicked down the road. We want a funding bill that congress has an obligation to giving us that favors our needs not the moneyed interests of the world.
Responsible-Sundae25@reddit
And guess what, fuck the GOP and Trump for the 40B sent to Argentina. I’m enough of a person to realize and call a spade a spade, no matter what side. We shouldn’t be giving a single dollar to another country until we don’t have debt.
Here is the difference between me and you. I have values and principles, no matter the party. I can swing to one side for an election and to the other side the next. I’m not a party loyalist as they have no loyalty to us.
Ebscriptwalker@reddit
You dont know me, you dont know what morals I hold dear, nor do you know who I have voted for in the past. What i do know is you have now acknowledged 2 things the gop have done that you lead me to believe that you would not have signed up for. You also acknowledged that there is no chance of congress reasserting their authority when it comes to their constitutional obligation to regulate taxation. I dont know you either, but are you sure i am the one that lacks convictions of my morals? I am compelled to ask how many more times are you going to have to say fuck Republicans and Trump for spending this money, or insert anything else here before you are compelled to change your vote. I have a feeling you may get the chance to see that stretch . Good luck on your decision.
Responsible-Sundae25@reddit
And guess what I’m sure if you voted for the democrats, you weren’t cool with basically open borders for the previous 4 years. I’m sure you weren’t cool with soft on crime DAs and legislators who didn’t have an issue allowing violent criminals back on the streets.
So here we are, parties do shit we don’t like and wouldn’t support afterwards. I can only engage with them on the facts of this matter. The GOP has a “clean” CR bill and the DNC has a bill of their items. The people suffer between.
If you want people to eat, someone has to give. Let me tell you, I believe the GOP can stomach people starving in the streets. They have a clear message that resonates with some. The Democrats have voted on this same CR many times in the past.
Ebscriptwalker@reddit
People will die either way. People are starving now. I personally have never had a problem with people coming in from outher countries to work here, is actually feel that every citizen unable to pass a citizenship test that talks about coming here the right way is a hypocrite. I feel that d.a.s are the responsibility of the state, and people that do not like their actions can vote them out or take advantage of this countries constitutional right of freedom of travel. A right that red states have recently attempted to infringe upon I might add. Sure there are things as far as policy goes i disagree with however. Most of those things are not in direct and unquestionable violation of the constitution. Now just so we are clear I can show you quite a few quotes from the gop that have amounted to courts and constitution be dawned. Now with that attitude it really really will not matter about your or my strong convictions. And really and truly only one side is advertising that mind set. You keep on worrying about those open borders, and leftist das that are in controll of cities you dont have to live in.
Responsible-Sundae25@reddit
Doesn’t matter, we are one country, states and cities don’t get to make up their own border policy. Thats literally one of the few federal obligations, of their overreaching claws.
You want to live in a country with open borders, I don’t know of one, but I’m sure you can go enjoy that somewhere else.
Ebscriptwalker@reddit
First off thanks for attempting to reduce the complexity of my argument for us by combining two points into one. However it obsfucates my meaning i said you could move away from a bad d.a.. I never cared about immigrants coming here to work. I dont believe they make me poorer, i dont believe they dilute my values, and i do believe that we have the room. Should they be vetted better sure, thats congresses job. Now to your point we are a country governed by laws.Biden adhered to those laws, the same laws that the supreme court the same court as right now held up during his presidency? Did the Supreme court find biden to be upholding immigration law? If not did he follow their rulings? Well let me ask you is the red congress that promised you better border policy doing anything to change those laws so that it could never happen again? Or are they planning to use the same tactic to get that vote from you in the future?
Responsible-Sundae25@reddit
The laws are already on the books, it’s a matter of enforcement. Some police offers give you a warning, some give you a ticket for speeding.
In my opinion, Biden was negligent in enforcement and only changed course when the public opinion turned. I believe it was a leading point for Trump to get elected.
“I don’t believe they make me poorer, I don’t believe they dilute my value” - good; but that’s not everyone and I’m in that boat. It’s the same for my profession, it’s the same for my neighbors and 100% the case for college kids coming out of school.
Ebscriptwalker@reddit
Actually no it also contains provisions to make sure the president must stop using Congress's taxation authority without explicitly voting for these new taxes. Which honestly should not need to be in there but here we are.
Responsible-Sundae25@reddit
So you and I both know that will never pass. So I guess here we are. I can’t wait for the republicans to remove the filibuster and you will get to see real power. Best of luck
Ebscriptwalker@reddit
I hope they do honestly. Im not an accelerationist, but if this is the alternative where the politicians i elect spend 6 months waiting for a phone call that will never come then it is in fact back against the wall time.
Responsible-Sundae25@reddit
Trust me, you won’t like the next 11 years and if the filibuster gets removed, you may want to plan on moving out, we are in PrepperIntel for a reason
Ebscriptwalker@reddit
If they pull that lever, my only option to get out might be political refuge and judging by how this country has been treating the one here i dont expect i will be welcomed warmly, I hope you understand that the things you are warning me against are the things I am assuming the people you are advocating for will be causing. I am not sure how you can be making these arguments and still feel as though you could be advocating for the better of the two evils, but i guess your morals that you carry so much conviction for are far more complex than I care to become involved in today.
