I used to work for a charity, and this is not wholly untrue. Well, I worked for the UK branch of an international aid charity, and while we did some work in the UK (mostly campaigning), most project work was handled overseas, by other people, meaning the UK organisation largely existed to gather money and send it to the people doing the work.

Of course, the work being done overseas was hugely important, and a relatively small percentage of what we raised was spent on fundraising, but it was still an odd experience working for an organisation who's main purpose is asking for money.
