How do you get over the fear of having a bear break into your house?

Have you ever met a bear? They're giant pansies, and unless you left food out or they're protecting their cubs, they want nothing to do with you.
Honestly, I have a bear that lives right next to my shop, and never once have I been worried about him. He minds his business, I mind mine, and we get along just fine. The only annoying thing about him is when he leaves me a giant berry-filled shit in my driveway.
Nercow@reddit
I saw countless bears in my parents yard growing up and that thought just never crossed my mind. Just lock your doors and you'll be fine

I live in Florida so I'm more worried a snake is going to come up through the toilet and bite my vagina when I get up to go pee in the middle of the night.
Lostsock1995@reddit
Bears primarily get into houses through unlocked doors or like screened in windows, a lot of bear sightings aren’t inside houses and are instead at outdoor garbage cans like behind restaurants. They aren’t going to bust down your locked door like a serial killer. And even if a bear did manage to walk into your house, it’s there to eat your trash and anything left out, it’s not going to go for you and eat you. You’re scary and could fight back and they just aren’t generally going for that. Most bear attacks happen because someone was near bear cubs (and unless you’re going out to kidnap them and take them home it’s pretty dang unlikely you’ll see them in your home)
Can a bear eat you? Yes. It is really that likely? No. They want easy food, not a human being. Just practice normal safety (like having bear proof trash cans and not leaving windows open) and you’ll be fine. Truly
RoryDragonsbane@reddit
Granted, this is over several years and out of millions of people who live near bears, but predatory attacks inside homes do happen.
Don't think "this will never happen to me" and be surprised when it does. Like you said, the best course of action is prevention. Keep trash secured, don't feed them, and report any nuisances.

"They aren’t going to bust down your locked door like a serial killer". Wanna bet? If they really want to come in no wooden door is going to stop them. Source: I live in the lake Tahoe area, and they are documented to have done this. Rare? Maybe. But it happens. That's why I keep a 12-gauge handy (which is what the local Forrest service bear officer recommended.). May not stop Yogi but I'll go down fighting.

Make sure you have round door knobs and keep the doors locked. I wouldn't worry about it too much. The thing you should be more focused on is making sure you have nothing in your car they might be attracted to. That doesn't stop at food either. Candy, flavored lip gloss, sodas, strong scented things, etc.

Bears don't eat people. They are far more interested in your trash.
I understand, however, that fears are not rational.
I suggest talking to neighbors and listening their experiences. Yours are likely to be similar. Chances are you will see bears in your yard. Stay inside. Keep your trash can in the garage.
Study your kind of bear and learn what motivates them. Knowledge and education are the way out of a lot of things

So I did spend seven years in a Colorado river town. One summer the black bears got so bad in town that the city put out an ordinance for unsecured trash bins.
One night I had gotten home around midnight from work. Parked across the street from the house and as I approached the driveway a momma bear stood up on two legs from behind the trash can. I didn’t see her until I was ten feet away and she was standing up. Talk about a backpedal, I backed to the truck where I had a flashlight and pistol. Trained my light and gun on her as she advanced across the street after me. Luckily the strobe function on my flashlight deterred her and I didn’t have to shoot.
I watched her turn around and go to my neighbor’s crab apple tree and sort of “bark” at it. Three cubs came down out of it. To this day one of the most unbelievable things I’ve personally witnessed.
But that’s the only time I’ve ever had one in the close vicinity of my actual home. All my other encounters with bears were on their turf in the woods.
Lugbor@reddit
You'll be fine. I've lived in bear country my entire life. I have a bear that wanders through the yard frequently. Not once has it tried to break into the house. The most it's done was shelter in the garage during a freak blizzard one spring, and that's because the door was old and falling apart.

I don't exactly live in bear country but I don't think it really happens enough to be afraid of. I mean yeah I'm sure people see bears maybe in their back yard or getting into trash cans but actually breaking into a house is probably rare. And even then I bet it's more like trashing the kitchen looking for food not like hunting you down in your bedroom to kill you while you sleep type situation.

Bears don't really attack people. They very rarely ever break into houses.
Coyotes might attack you if they're in a pack and you're outside. Or they attack livestock. That's why country folk like myself shoot them at every opportunity.

Maybe this statistic will help.
What you’ve just described has happened just about zero times in the history of the USA. Maybe a handful of times. Official specific statistics on fatal bear attacks in the home do not exist - but on average there are .72 fatal bear attacks in the USA every year with nearly all of them occurring outside of homes - most often in the wild.
Happening 55,550x more often, for example, are motor vehicle fatalities.
There are 64,652x more gun deaths per year in the USA.
There are about 458x more fatalities in plane crashes in the USA every year than near track fatalities.
There are about 6,200x the number of drowning fatalities each year in the USA than bear fatalities.
There are about 22x the number of football related deaths every year in the USA than bear attack deaths.
I’ve just done some research and found evidence of 4 in home bear attack fatalities in the last 7 years in the USA. Thats an unofficial number from brief research.
In terms of a fatal bear attack while a person was in their bed? I’ve found 2 such cases in the history of the USA.
Hopefully these numbers will put you at ease and not make you stop playing football or riding on cars.
Raff102@reddit
4 is honestly way higher than I thought it would be.

YellojD@reddit
It’s not that bad. If it’s black bears, they’re basically big ass mice. They scatter when they see you. I had a momma and her three cubs bust into my house at 3 am a few summers ago. I wasn’t scared, but SUPER annoyed. They caused a lot of damage, but it was trying to get away from me, not eat me.

You learn about bears and follow the recommendations on how to deal with stuff bears might want to eat so no bears come to associate your house with food.
No outdoor pets, no outdoor pet food. No trash bags lying around. No unprotected gardens. No throwing out grease.
Basically same stuff you'd do for ants and rodents and deer with the added addition of small pets being potential food.
YoshiandAims@reddit
Honestly?
You just kind of have to live with it... without it happening.
You remind yourself that is rarer than you imagine it is. A bear breaking into an occupied home is incredibly rare. (*unless you condition them by feeding them, etc. Make sure they do not associate you or your house with food.)
You behave responsibly with food scrap, trash, bird feeders, deer feed, etc.
Another tip is to learn more about the behavior of bears. The odds they break in and then go for you are lower than them breaking in.
You come across them? They startle, they panic, they flee, they get interested in food. I've been unexpectedly next to them dozens of times... without incident beyond mutual surprise and the bear taking off.
Mostly they flee, ignore you, are curious. Attacks are the rarest. 1 in 2million I think it is. Still, stay away from them. Be cautious. But it's not the biggest threat in bear country.
(NOT including mama's with cubs. Always the riskiest encounter. You see cubs keep far away. )
Self-Comprehensive@reddit
I do it by not living in bear country.
4Q69freak@reddit
I live in Southeastern Illinois, so not really worried about it, IL hasn’t had a resident population of bears since the 1870s. We’re too far north for the occasional bear sighting in Southern IL and way too far south for those in Northern IL.
We lived in the U.P. of MI for 5 years and never saw a live bear, although one was spotted about 3 blocks from our house. I did see one that had just been shot by a sheriff’s deputy after it was hit by a semi, and a dead cub along side the highway that had been run over. Black bear maulings are a rare occurrence. Fatal maulings average about 1 a year in North America (but there’s been 2 in 2025 both in Arkansas), and brown bear fatal maulings are about the same. Most Bear attacks usually occur when someone gets between a sow and her cubs.

I'm pretty confident that they are bad with round doorknobs, and I say that as someone in a complex with a bear-proof dumpster, who has had them on my porch (usually at dusk, because we have a grill), and who had one hibernate under a neighbor's house a couple winters ago. Besides, if they do get inside, they are far more likely to raid your kitchen than eat you. They are very food-motivated.
