I just got warm fuzzy tingles at this scene! -Full Circle Moment

So I'm watching Xena this morning on Roku and one of my favorite episodes "Path of Vengeance" was on, and I had to stop and watch it, and I noticed something I never noticed before. I had to use pics from Amazon subs, for context because I couldn't find this scene ANYWHERE, and they changed 'Chin' to China in the subtitles, but I'm just giving context to the scene. Anywho...
It was the scene when Eve revealed she was going to go off alone to Chin to spread the message of Eli. Xena offers to escort her the rest of the way because Eve was leaving right now, and I guess Xena was full of emotions because of the time lost between them, and afraid because she just saved her daugther from execution. Eve is still being persecuted for being Livia just as Xena was persecuted for her past wherever she went (only Xena was willing to defend herself in most cases and had Gabrielle step in when she wasnt willing to, whereas Eve was full pacifist & didnt believe in defending herself for her crimes). I'm sure at this point, Xena also wanted to spend more time with her daughter as a mom, but Eve is on a mission and doesn't want to be distracted. Eve declines and said "no, this is something she had to do alone." And Ganrielle nods in approval, and has this serendipitous, bitter sweet smile, while Xena looks heart broken and sad as she buries her head in her hand, holding back tears. Gabrielle looks up lovingly at Xena to make sure she's okay and holds it together, and then as Xena begins to cry as she watches her daugther walk away, Gabrielle just gives a shrug and a smile, like "well, what can you do, kids. She has a mission to fulfill." BRUH!! But this moment came full circle & so many scenes came flooding into my head when I rewatched this lol.
I've seen this episode so many times, but I don't know why I didn't catch this before, but Xena is in the EXACT spot, exact scenario she left Gabrielle, when they had one of their biggest, most controversial falling outs that lead to their trust being broken. When Xena had to leave Gabrielle for Chin, to repay a debt to Lao Ma & Gabrielle had to watch Xena walk away into the sunset of the unknown! Only this time it was Eve leaving for Chin to repay a debt of salvation to Eli, by spreading his message, and now it was Xena watching her daugther walk off into the sunset of the unknown! In THAT moment, all Xena could do is be a supporting mom and let her go & respect her decision, like Xena expected Gabrielle to respect her decision...and Gabrielle gave a nod and a badazz smile like an approving dad sending their kid off because there's mutual respect and understanding š, but I bet Gabrielle had SO much emotions in that scene! She was remembering when Xena left her and how she felt, and how interesting life comes back around, but she she also seemed so proud of Eve in that moment because it probably reminded Gabrielle of when she first left home to follow Xena on a mission to find herself!! This interaction was only a few seconds but it got me a little teary eyed this morning because it was so beautiful and I never caught it before š„¹.
The writing on this show was so awesome, and genius, but what makes it great is the fans who piece together the little details that were probably unintentional sometimes, but still makes so much sense in context šš. It was this tiny unspoken gesture from Gabby that made me even catch all that this time around & I just wanted to share, because I have literally no one else to share this moment with who even watches Xena & no one else would probably care š¤£.

That last photo⦠in the scene it always struck me as odd gabbys/Reneeās reaction almost like sheās laughing. Like itās a blooper take they used.
AJRingler@reddit
Yeah, I think that was fully a Renee reaction, not a Gabby reaction. Highly inappropriate to the given circumstances. I guess it was the best shot they got. š¤·āāļø
DrLoomis131@reddit
Itās a blooper they kept in lol. There was an ongoing joke on set about Eve constantly being in danger, so when Xena yells āstay out of troubleā it gave them both a reaction

It did feel like a blooper when I first watched. And knowing Lucy she probably mumbled something funny under her breath lol. But the reactions, even Renee's still fit so well in the context of the scene and all their past, traumas, growth etc, and I don't even think they realized it lol. That's what makes it such a cool scene...whether it was intentional or accidental it works š„²

LOL! I got the same feeling at first watch, though it was supposed to be touching.
Lucy: "Whew! I like Adrienne and all, but this 'daughter' stuff's been so weird. I mean, like, I only knew her two seconds as an adult. With my luck, they'll bring her back in a flashback as a foul-mouthed teen, to make up for the years I missed. Oh, gawd, I'm getting giggles. They still shooting? I'll hide my face, like I'm crying."
Renee: "It's OK, partner. I'll cover for you as usual -- smile and comfort you, so it comes off as a heartfelt mother-daughter parting."

I read an interview that they didn't know how to end the scene. I don't think Lucy was happy with it, so they were just throwing out lines.

Well i was certainly happy to see the back of that particular character. But yes i did notice that.

Gah! No. I did not like this scene. I mean, I was happy Eve was leaving. Let's face it, she could be irritating at times. But I hated the way she said goodbye to Gabrielle. 'Thanks for making my Mom happy.' That's it. Really?

That scene is so sweet and sad, bittersweet does seem to be a recurring theme throughout the entire series now that I think about it. Chin is a cornerstone in Xenaās past both in her Destroyer days and in her history with Gabrielle. Eve going there to spread love vs Xena going there to conquer mustāve been just as healing as it was scary for Xena to see her daughter off to such a far land. Shame Xena didnāt get a chance to tell her the fastest route, Xena can make it to Chin and back in a couple of weeks it seems š
It must literally feel like a couple of years ago to Xena that Eve was a baby. Not just in the sense that kids grow up in the blink of an eye but because Xena was asleep for 25 years + the year she forgot who she was in the Norse trilogy. Poor Xena, her motherhood journey is so sad and touching Also,

Yes! I didnt even connect that overlap of Xena setting out to Chin on a war path, and her daugther returning with a message of peace...basically trying to untangle some of the ideologies Xena may have unintentionally spread through her influence when kidnapping Lao Ma's son. See this is why I like posting here. Yall give me so many cool layers and dynamics to think about, on top of what I'm already sharing š.
There are so many bitter sweet moments. I like how for the most part, Xena keeps it real & shows the reality of cause and effect, and how we can't always outrun our choices in life, but we shouldn't stop trying to redeem ourselves anyways if growth and love are what we are truly seeking. It shows how BAD things can get if you wallow in self pity too much & constantly strive for redemption to the point you're a doormat or self sacrificing, but also shows how easily evil wins if you don't even try to suck out all that poision.
And yes to your mother hiod comment, that's what I was talking about. Xena had motherhood ripped from her arms again, and though Xena is Xena and deserves a happy ending, it still kept it real to show Eve had her own mission & couldn't stop for Xena, because time kept going despite Xena not being there (not Xena's but still...consequence to action of who she was & how things played out). It's SO unfair š. Xena was SOOOOOOO evil, and you still root for Xena, but even as great as she is, life still won in the end, and all we got to see were fragments of happiness for her throughout the series & not a typical "happy ending" for a redeemed warrior. And it played out that way in so many areas...life, love, motherhood,Ā friendships, redemption, legacy. Ugh š

Oh I donāt mind that you wrote a lot at all. I have so much analysis to catch up joining this fandom so late, Iām so relieved and excited thereās still people interested in breaking down and discussing the series after 30 years.
Itās funny you were watching this episode where she says bye to Eve because last night I was just watching Orphan of War, where we meet Solan. Xena tells Gabrielle that giving birth doesnāt stop just because youāve had the baby, that Solan has continued to grow inside of her every day. She wanted Solan so badly but couldnāt trust herself and didnāt think she deserved him. Itās so saaaaaaaad! š„ŗš©
The two episodes actually have a couple of cute full circle moment. In Orphan of War, Xenaās like āThatās my son and none of your business š¤ā and by Path of Vengeance, sheās crying to Gabby because their daughter is grown up and off to see the world (well more of it lol). In both episodes, Gabrielle fights to protect Xenaās children too, even when sheās just baby Gabby with her little stick, sheās the freaking sweetest
