What do most Americans use to watch live sports these days?

Hey, I’m curious, do most people in the U.S. still use cable for watching live sports like the NFL, NBA, or Premier League, or have most switched to streaming services?
Outside the U.S., it feels like everyone’s using different apps or platforms depending on where you live. Just wondering what’s considered the “normal” or most reliable setup over there.
whtevrnichole@reddit
illegally or with the cable that’s bundled into my rent.
Designer-Carpenter88@reddit
I don’t have cable. I use streaming where I can, or I use my HD antenna for broadcast channels. Otherwise I miss out. (Though I really only watch my local college team and our nfl team)
LiveArrival4974@reddit
Apparently there's an increase of people using TikTok live to watch it.
Harry_Balsanga@reddit
I honestly don't anymore. It's all so fragmented and frustrating that I just stopped bothering.
BoseSounddock@reddit
I use YouTube TV or usually ESPN+ if what I want to watch isn’t available on YouTube TV
ehrenzoner@reddit
Paramount+ for Serie A, EFL, Champions League, and Europa League, ESPN+ for Bundesliga, Peacock for Premier League, and AppleTV+ for MLS.
EffectiveCycle@reddit
An antenna for CBS/ABC/NBC/Fox, Peacock for specialty things I watch, and Fubo for baseball and hockey
Stoppushingtheapp@reddit
People always forget the antenna option
AardvarkIll6079@reddit
It’s basically only an option for local NFL games. Other major sports rarely have games on OTA networks.
danhm@reddit
Yep. For baseball there is a single game on Fox per work and everyone hates their announcers compared to their local guys. Unfortunately they also have the rights to the ALCS and World Series.
shelwood46@reddit
Eh, if you don't live near the antennas, you can forget it. Digital broadcast transmitters don't send far and get blocked by silly things, even people who live in the actual cities often can't use antennas. Broadcast reception sucks; the FCC should offer all broadcast channels and C-SPAN on a free streaming service.
MattinglyDineen@reddit
This only works if you live near a station.
TheJokersChild@reddit
Not always an option. Some live in areas too distant or obstructed to pick up the stations.
AgentCatBot@reddit
I live in a populated area, but the hilly obstructions of the land give me 2 channels, both in Spanish.
This was less of a problem in the analog era because a little fuzzy was ok. With digital, a minimum signal clarity is needed. I could probably fix this with a more powerful aerial or an attic antenna or something, but not worth the effort.
Unoriginal_UserName9@reddit
And zero lag.
Typical-Amoeba-6726@reddit
Love the antenna. 🤫
Nivloc1227@reddit
YoutubeTv works well, but it's not much different than cable.
HardTellinN0tKnowin@reddit
And just as expensive now
Express_Barnacle_174@reddit
You ain't kidding. My mom (who cut cable a couple of years ago) asked where she could watch the Buckeyes, and as far as I could tell it was YoutubeTV... which was $85 per goddamn month. Holy shit! That's insane!
She decided she didn't want to watch college football that badly.
Historical_Low4458@reddit
The Big Ten has games over the air with traditional tv. Now, obviously she wouldn't get to choose to watch Ohio St specifically, but between Fox, CBS, and NBC, there is a chance that the Buckeyes would be one of those stations at some point over a weekend.
Imaginary_Ladder_917@reddit
This is what my husband uses.
Beneficial-Two8129@reddit
Local teams are broadcast on cable, so if you're a fan of the local teams, you don't need any of the streaming services unless you don't have cable. Indeed, the games might be blacked out on streaming services in the local market.
tcrhs@reddit
I don’t watch sports, so I can’t answer this for you. Hopefully, someone else will give you an excellent answer
4Q69freak@reddit
We use an antenna for the 4 networks, SlingTV for “cable channels” like FS1, ESPN, TBS, TNT, USA, and Big Ten Network, and Paramount and Peacock for some other NBC and CBS sports programming.
kit0000033@reddit
I like the Olympic sports and they're all on peacock.
Relevant_Elevator190@reddit
TV.
shelwood46@reddit
I got satellite (DTV, then Dish) when I moved to my current apartment in 2014, then cut the cord and switched to streaming only in 2018 (I am on a border between two media areas and can't get any channels by antenna, none). I did free trials of all at that time, had Sling for a bit, then switched to what was then AT&T Live and is now Directv Stream. It gives me ESPN and most of the local broadcast stations (no CBS). I have Paramount+ for live CBS. They've started putting sports on many of the other major streamers, Prime, Peacock, even Apple+. I share those with my family. So I stream. Occasionally I use my VPN to stream stuff on obscure, often foreign sites, that is blocked/unavailable here, like out of mark NFL games (our black-out rules are weird).
smcl2k@reddit
I have Peacock, Paramount+, and Hulu Live with ESPN. I've also had MLS Season Pass for the last few years for "free" with my season ticket, but I doubt I'll pay for it going forward.
EMitch02@reddit
Only watch NFL. Prime for Thursday night games. NFL+ for RedZone, international games, & game replays
I'll sail the high seas if I really want to watch a single game live
8avian6@reddit
Local fox stations usually have the NFL games. I've also seen them in Amazon prime and Tubi
captainstormy@reddit
An Over The Air antenna for most games.
A lot of stuff is on the regular streaming apps too that most people already have.
stroppo@reddit
I watch network TV. No cable, no streaming, never had it, never will. No services I have to pay for. So if a game isn't available on network TV, I can't watch it. On occasion I've gone to a local bar or restaurant to watch. But that costs money too.
sonicpieman@reddit
Cable login in the respective app.
coronarybee@reddit
My dad uses Hulu live and goes to bars for the ones not on there or peacock
Queenfan1959@reddit
My eyes
mdzkelduncol@reddit
I use an antenna for many games and then whatever streaming service something might be on
Sucitraf@reddit
I watch 2 sports, NBA and NPB.
YouTube TV for NBA, and I share access with my family.
JSports On Demand and IPTV to watch most NPB, Giants.tv for the Yomiuri games.
maddmax_gt@reddit
We use regular TV for Hockey (and literally only pay for TV service for Hockey) but sometimes it’s only on Hulu (which I can’t stand)
No-Koala1918@reddit
Combo. Most sports are still shown on linear tv, like over the air, cable, or YTTV. Some individual games are lately only available on streaming services(through their live functionality).
Ill-Butterscotch1337@reddit
I use Superbox
RodeoBoss66@reddit
Wild guess, but I think most Americans use their eyes and ears.
I could be wrong though. Maybe most Americans use their feet.
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
Hulu Live TV for me personally.
It isn't the cheapest and I don't always care for the interface, but the ability to use it on multiple platforms (phone, PC, TV) simtaneously flawlessly is nice. I also like it for their catalog of shows I like.
imthesqwid@reddit
I tried Hulu for a while but their DVR, especially for sports was garbage. I remember not being able to fast forward on my “recorded” games, is this still the case?
Karen125@reddit
Yes, you can't fast forward through commercials but you can fast forward parts of the game.
cultural-orca@reddit
Oh hell no
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
Dunno. I never use it for that.
drink-beer-and-fight@reddit
I only get the Hulu live upgrade for the football season. The rest of the year it’s the cheapest most basic tier they offer.
Karen125@reddit
Too bad my husband watches Nascar with their 9 month long season.
drink-beer-and-fight@reddit
It is always a wrench missing the Daytona 500. It’s just not in my budget.
Karen125@reddit
If it's on for Feb for the Super Bowl you can probably leave it on for the 500 at the end of Feb if you time it right.
Soonerpalmetto88@reddit
A tv
jrc_80@reddit
I use my TV antenna, or if the game is unavailable or blacked out, I’ll listen to it on the radio.
rattlehead44@reddit
I have MLB.TV free through T-Mobile to watch my sad and miserable Pirates play, local cable channels (through Hulu Live) to watch my 49ers, Sharks, and Warriors. National broadcasts (ESPN, FOX, TBS, etc.) also through Hulu Live.

Brandenburg42@reddit
Apple TV has 100% of MLS with no blackouts.
Spectacular for big fans, but all of the casual viewers not interested in the sub are gone because they can't accidentally find a game on channel flipping.
SarK-9@reddit
Peacock for Premier League, Paramount Plus for Champions League.
Tinman5278@reddit
Yes. I get my home Internet service through a cable provider. But I don't have their cable service - just internet. But they also have their own streaming app that allows me to get the exact same list of channels that their cable service provides. I get full access to ESPN and The NFL network, FOX Sports, the SEC Network, etc.. though that app. The wife and I also have Amazon Prime so we get some sports (like Thursday night Football) through that.
There are probably other sports on other streaming apps we use (Apple TV, HULU, etc..) but we don't watch them.
RobotShlomo@reddit
Football and hockey. Basketball is starting soon but it takes a while to get back into that.
cosmicdave86@reddit
During football season I subscribe to YouTube TV, the multiview is just so damn clutch I don't care that it's pricy.
The rest of the year it's a pirates life for me.
capsrock02@reddit

Depends, regular season baseball Mlbtv, it’s $150 a year. I have YouTube TV and ESPN plus that covers everything else.

We have cable tv still but no longer have a box, everything is streaming. So we download the Spectrum App and it streams TV like a old school cable box would give you TV.
Ghost_Turtle@reddit
Spectrum app 100%

SabresBills69@reddit
Most use regular TVsbwith cabke/ satellite connection.
Streaming skews younger or to where that is the only option to watch the game.
Thr problems with streaming.....
Most of the county land I s rural and can't support it. This us about 20% of the population
Another percentage are just not buying it because they can't afford it or they have no interest
3. The concern by many is thst currently csble/ satellite us one source and you can add packages tk see what you want. Its easier to manage. In streaming you need to go to a bunch of different companies with paramount, WB/ discovery, Hulu, YouTube, apple, Netflix, peacock, espn, fox sports, and others that be able to get all the stations.
indicarunningclub@reddit
I use Hulu live but sometimes other streaming services have live games, like Amazon. For my local team (Phx Suns), I watch the games on the local news channel as the owner signed an agreement to keep the games on the local channel for free. Not all the games are on there but a good number are. I do watch a lot of soccer (football), including European leagues and Hulu has enough of those streaming to keep me satisfied.
sendme_your_cats@reddit
Kodi on my nvidia shield lol
xworfx@reddit
Mad Titan or Crew?
ParadoxicalFrog@reddit
Oh, this hockey broadcast? Fell off a truck. Yep. Don't worry, it's paid for. 😉
JBrewd@reddit
Cable TV and Internet are included as part of my condo association fees. At this point the cable company includes like 8 streaming services as part of the cable package so if it isn't on cable I just cast it from the app or use the app for replays/highlights. Exception to that is f1tv which is well worth paying for if you're a formula fan (which is sadly going to apple TV next year so I'll probably be back to sailing the seas for that).
Semi-Pros-and-Cons@reddit
I use someone else's house or a bar. Either way, the food is better.
ootd_dress@reddit
Depends on the sport, honestly. A lot of people I know just stick with Peacock or YouTube TV because they bundle most of the major leagues.
Others cut the cord completely and use VIP streaming apps, like GoBuyAny, for international games and everything else they’re also pretty cheap. It’s kind of all over the place depending on your budget and which teams you follow.
LCxEskimoFTW@reddit
I saw them on r/appletv and never looked back.
Abdeljbbar@reddit
Is the VIP app really worth it?
ThruTexasYouandMe@reddit
Amazon Firestick + Sportsfire + Rapid Streamz works well and is free
TonyTwoDat@reddit
I mean I’m old school I like to watch my sports live and on TV. I have Direct TV and only stream games that are only on streaming services like Prime or if I’m not home and want to watch I’ll stream on my phone. Other than that I’m watching it on Fox, ESPN, NFL network MLB network etc. and direct tv also gives me Extra Innings for free
BassWingerC-137@reddit
Aerial antenna for most. I don’t have cable, some apps for other stuff. YouTube TV and F1TV.
Dio_Yuji@reddit
A million different streaming apps
Eat--The--Rich--@reddit
Lots of hockey fans use the grey area streaming sites because the league has so many dumb blackouts. There's a post in r/hockey right now about the senators having the game blacked out in their own fucking stadium lol.
Specific-Peanut-8867@reddit
Everybody’s watching it on TV via a differen app
But there’s still a lot of it that’s on cable or TV
But every baseball team pretty much has their own network you can subscribe to
ESPN has a lot of sports so there’s a lot of sports on Fox Sports channels
Upstairs-Storm1006@reddit
I have Xfinity cable plus a bunch of streaming services, we can launch all of them from the cable boxes, instead of the apps on the TVs. The voice remote is great.
It's pretty much the most expensive option but also the simplest so it works for me.
FormerlyDK@reddit
I don’t watch sports.
soonerpgh@reddit
I use YouTube because I mostly just watch college football and what I want is always live on there, or has been so far.
doa70@reddit
Unless you can get what you want with over the air, cable or OTT services line YTTV are still king. I keep YTTV primarily for sports coverage. I'm close enough to NYC and Philly, but would need a 40' tower for over the air reception of either due to terrain between.
DavidDoesDallas@reddit
I use:
IPTV (one service)
Free Youtube for video game highlights (shortly after a game is over)
MeTieDoughtyWalker@reddit
DirecTV, ESPN app, Peacock for soccer, Paramount Plus for soccer, Amazon for Thursday Night Football. I think that’s it. Pretty ridiculous. Thankfully, other than ESPN, which is bundled with my Hulu and Disney, I don’t have any of those services BECAUSE of sports.
bren3669@reddit
the television
Aaarrrgghh1@reddit
To be honest I don’t really watch sports or news anymore.
Sports is just a modern day gladiatorial spectacle to keep the masses entertained and the news is just to make us hate each other and to sell stuff to us.
No-Lunch4249@reddit
No shit, bunny ears

I dropped cable about 3 years ago. I use Hulu to watch NASCAR, it's the only sport I watch. I stream everything else. No, I'm not a redneck. :)

GotchUrarse@reddit
I'm a liberal Redneck. I love Jeff Foxworthy. I live in the South, grew up in the north, but was born to live down here.

I use the new ESPN service. With Disney, Hulu and ESPN it's 30 with ads. I grew up in the 90s the ads don't bother me except they're always the same. I have an old HD antenna for Fox or CBS games. And the little bit of football on prime and Paramount( or peacock I can't remember)

I only care about the NHL. I use Gotham to watch the NJ Devils, which I subscribe to during the season. I already have Hulu and HBO Max, so I can watch the national games on there.
pinniped90@reddit
The streaming services have most of what I need. Paramount, Peacock, and Amazon mainly.
Used to have to really hunt for Premier League and rugby, but now we get those.
Still have to sail the high seas for most cricket.
BrantGoodleaf@reddit
Fubo over here. Has NESN (Sox and Bruins), ESPN, USA (Premier League), and the local CBS and FOX affiliates for NFL coverage. Only major sports channel they don’t carry is TNT. I used to catch those games on HBO Max but their price went up so I do without now.
Judgy-Introvert@reddit
YouTubeTV mostly. We watch a lot of sports so we also have ESPN+ and Peacock.
DGlen@reddit
Stick an antenna on your TV to watch football
WonderfulProtection9@reddit
Sling is a streaming service that has tons of free content; but you can pay for packages of either all the ESPN channels or all the Fox Sports channels (or both). Depending on what you need, that covers a lot.
But every streaming service seems to offer something. I watched the entire Tour de France on Peacock.
MoronLaoShi@reddit
I live in China. I mostly keep updating my adblockers and which live streaming sites have not been shut down by the feds. I pay nada. But I guess I pay for the VPN to access the western internet.
NotBrooklyn2421@reddit
I went back to cable. Having 5 different streaming services was getting annoying (and expensive) and I’ve never liked the poor quality and unpredictability that comes with pirating. Plus, my cable company now includes subscriptions to 3 of the 5 streaming services I had as part of my monthly bill.
It’s still more expensive than some other options, but the convenience is worth it.

I only watch nfl .. usually I watch the ota broadcasts but I’ll occasionally just watch the highlights on YouTube or the reaired games on Pluto tv .. Tubi has the playoffs and Super Bowl free .. cable and other services are a waste for me cuz I don’t like most of the shit that’s on tv .. I get Netflix free and I barely watch that ..

YouTubetv is just cable, but streaming. Similar packages, similar high price.

For baseball I pay like 100 bucks for the MLB app each year. For Football if I dont have the app that has a game on it like Amazon or one of the oddball streamers like Paramount+ I watch it on Piracy+
NastyNate4@reddit
I use Hulu Live for about half the year during football season. I had MLS pass for the last two seasons which was a pretty good deal. That gets me plenty of content throughout the year
StrongStyleDragon@reddit
I only watch 2 American sports. NFL I use NFL+ it gives you all the games that cable would give you. MLB my phone plan with T-Mobile gives me their streaming service. I support Atlanta so I can watch their games. It’s blacked out if I were to watch the local games. I use VIX+ for liga mx, ESPN+ for Bundesliga & cup games. I used to have YouTube TV but they take away so many channels it’s not worth it. I might just go back to cable. So I’m missing out on PL right now.
Irritable_Curmudgeon@reddit
Cable here. At least for hockey, because of blackout restrictions, streaming services are not permitted to show the local teams. You have to watch on their local affiliate station (or, sometimes, through that station's separate streaming app). Nationally broadcast games typically work the same way.
