Roller Rink 1988

I was an awkward middle schooler. I was watching the episode of Bobs Burgers where they end up at a roller skating rink. It brought back a core memory of going to the rink in middle school. I had few friends. Id go alone, my mom would drop me off for a few hours. Arcade games, skating, window shopping my own skates I never got, but if I had ida been SO COOL. (I would not, in fact, have been cool)
If I close my eyes I can see the neon laces, smell the fog machines, hear the music. Def Leppard "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and associated songs blaring.
Im hoping this is one of the scenes I see when I die, if thats all to be believed. It was magic. Im not the awkward friendless middle schooler anymore. I grew out of that fairly quickly. But man, did that core memory just crash in on me.
Tag for Def Leppard. I can always listen to Def Leppard. And Motley Löu.

'87-88 sounds about right for my most frequent skating rink time as well. That Def Lep was one of a handful of songs that are forever inextricably linked to the skating rink in my brain, along with:
- La Isla Bonita (Madonna); i don't think I ever heard this song *outside* of the rink in those days actually
- both Venus and Cruel Summer (Bananarama)
- You Give Love a Bad Name (Bon Jovi)
- Girls (Beasties)

For my rink it was Billy Idol's Mony, Mony. Every time the DJ would say we're turning it off if everybody starts singing the "alternative" lyrics. And first chorus everybody was screaming the "alternative" lyrics.
"We built this city on rock n rock" was also alternatively phrased "We built this city on sex and drugs". We were also all like 12-13 years old and absolutely nobody did drugs at that time..

We had no roller rink in my youth. But all the ice rinks had a free skate. Unfortunately with fill rink lighting, and music piped over the shitty voice PA.

Mid 80s for me.
Couple skate was Purple Rain
That's What Friends Are For, Brass Monkey, She Works Hard For The Money, Thriller, Dancing Queen were played a lot.

I can't hear Heart of Glass without wanting to slap some skates on and hit my giant driveway. Luckily for my hip, I made my sister return the skates she bought me. We skated in our driveway more often than the rink.

Is there any middle schooler who is NOT awkward? I miss the skating rink also BTW.

For me it was 1980-1982. The carpet, the booming stereo...the blisters on my feet after a 3 hour skate session. It was FANTASTIC.

Same time frame for me at the roller rink. Carpeted walls, video games, and Prince are what I remember
ruka_k_wiremu@reddit
As well, though The Cars, Blondie, The Police and some local sounds - especially The Swingers' Counting the Beat

Late 70’s for me. A lot of disco, David Soul “Don’t give up on us, baby” was often a couple skate song. I can remember the lights, the smell of popcorn at the snack bar. Always on a Saturday afternoon in the winter. Good times!

Playland in Las Vegas. 1980 to about 1985. About seven to twelve years old. Went every Tuesday. Hokey Pokey, couples skate, all that. The rink is a Harbor Freight now. I can still see its bones. Sigh.

Slow skates. You got a partner? I’m 11, no I don’t. But it tried!

Did anyone else’s skating rink do the penny scramble where they would scatter a bucket of coins across the rink and then everyone would make a mad rush to grab as many as possible?
ranoutofbacon@reddit
Absolutely lived for the all nighters. The night would start around 6pm with about 200 skaters. After 9 some would start going home. By midnight there were like 50 or so. You knew by then no one was coming to get you so you'd grab some pizza and chill with your friends for a bit. They'd do a fast skate at around 2am to get everyone amped. 4am rolls around and people are sleeping on the benches a dozen are still doing laps. 6am arrives and parents start showing up to pick kids up. Everyone is tired full of junk food and excited to do it again next time.

Well my timeline is earlier but the roller rink was my middle school refuge as well, circa 1979. Jesus fuckin Christ on a Zamboni... 1979!!
My mom or dad would drop me off at the local roller rink on Saturday or Sunday afternoons (usually Sundays). I was also typically alone. The rink was one of those old school things with beautiful waxed wooden floors and a pipe organ. They would hire a guy to come in and play the pipe organ for an hour or so before they put the regular music on. I have a clear memory of skating to "Don't Bring Me Down" by ELO. It was popular where I grew up in Chicago so naturally they were playing the single at the rink.
Those were the days...
Euphoric-Sell-5272@reddit
Always played this between rounds of skating

Did everybody’s roller rink have the big wooden spools used for commercial cable laid on its side for you to sit on while lacing up your skates? In my area I remember several different rinks that used that set up. Still have a scar on my knee from rolling into one.

sounds lonely as fuck
why the hell would you want to be reminded of that?

It was more of an early 80s place for me. Loved skating, video games, and couples skate. But I quit going after I started driving. I had more interesting things to do after that.
Jennis8108@reddit
We used to use the light sticks and skate around with them. My rink was The Rink in Bergenfield, NJ, early to mid 80s.

1983/84/85. I made my then-boyfriend-eventual-husband go with me one time. (the last time, actually). Turns out, he couldn't skate. We still had fun and by the end of the evening, he wasn't grasping the wall for support.
I thought that when my kids reached rollerblading age, my skating (both roller and ice!) skills would be beneficial. But even with wearing kneepads and wrist braces, my brain would not accept that I wouldn't be hurt hitting the ground. By the time my kids were at that age, I was two knee injuries into my adulthood. They did great, though. And they grew so fast that my blades didn't go to waste, my oldest fit into them rather quickly.
