Relocating for Job

Internet strangers, i'm in need of advice. I'll be relocating to the DFW area come march 2026 for a new job.
I'm 40yo, single, male (if that matters), no children, one dog, hobbies include hiking/mountaineering, kayaking, security/bypass, reading, museums, exploring small town shops, winter sports (but...you know...tx), camping, cooking (like a cooking class, i'm a poor host but i like cooking), volunteering (background EMT and Animal Shelter (no background in animal rescue though, unfortunately), martial arts, just a normal dude.
office is located in Roanoke. I've been to the area a few times, but not enough to know the ins and outs. I know traffic can get insane, so i'm not looking to be more than like 20-25 minutes away from the office. I've been in the Cleveland/Akron area for some time, moved from western NY (buffalo-ish area). I'm not afraid of the traffic, i'd just prefer to not be stuck in it for hours on end, if i'm close enough to bike it i will.
I'm not sure what cost of living is like, would a budget of about 2 - 2.5k be reasonable for an apt or townhouse? what do you guys like most about the DFW area? least? what's something you wish someone told you before moving to the DFW area (i know it's a vast area, forgive me if this is naive)?

that’s a solid take making the move and getting the degree already shows you’re serious, so skipping the walk sounds like a reasonable trade-off

Roanoke is on the far edge of the metro, closer to Ft. Worth than Dallas. It's going to feel suburban to rural if you choose to live there. Depending on the type of living you want (typical apartment vs. modern townhome vs single family), you'll probably want to live somewhere between Roanoke and downtown Ft. Worth. With a budget of $2.5k, you'll have no problem finding an apartment or a 2 bed townhome (not sure what the other guy is on about).
Make sure to check out the Kimball Museum in Ft. Worth and the Zoo. I've heard they're both great, but haven't had a chance to visit myself.
If you need a hand with the apartment search when the time comes, feel free to reach out. I'm a realtor and apartment locator and can help you with your move 100% for free. DM me if you'd like more info.

I would aim for a house with a yard with that budget given your pup. Or a location close to an amenable dog park/open area. :)

The other guy (me) wasn't sure if the 2-2.5k was his entire budget or just his rent (or mortgage) budget.

If u need a house mate to have company, hmu. (Can’t pay rent but would be a great friend ;-;)

Based off of your outdoor hobbies you’ll be a bit disappointed. DFW is beyond lack luster for outdoor enthusiasts.

It's great for mountain biking if you like that, there's lots of trails. And winter doesn't affect that as much as other areas. For stuff like camping and hunting you pretty much have to get out of the metroplex.

There's no way you'll find anything reasonable near Roanoke. Mid Cities are expensive, as is the entire DFW area, due to a housing shortage.
$2k is more a roommate situation for housing.
No mountains unless you drive to West Texas, also know that Roanoke/Keller/Southlake is the most conservative area of DFW - depending on your politics, that could be a good or bad thing.

2k-2.5k is a very reasonable budget for Roanoke/Alliance center area. A quick Zillow search shows multiple 3 (or 4!) bedroom homes in that range. I have friends in a very nice downtown Fort Worth 2 bedroom apartment for 2500…..

Sure, that's why i suggested looking at far north fort worth.
