60 hp for barely any MPG hit. Price is a bit extreme, but it’s an obvious upgrade if you can afford it.
SaintTastyTaint@reddit
The car looks so chunky to me; especially the front end, like it just ate a an XL pizza by itself.
bombastica@reddit
I’m willing to test drive one since my criteria for my next car is:
Dark headliner, tactile steering wheel controls, ventilated seats, CarPlay/Android Auto, Remote Start.
I’d prefer something more GTI sized but alas there’s no remote start.
I’m curious to cross shop this with the GR RAV4 but I recall it got disqualified when it came to ventilated seats.
I’d also be curious to wait it out a year and see what a hybrid would look like. The last few times I’ve been in my friends NX I’ve just been shocked at how damn smooth it is in the city which is where I do all my driving.

Meanwhile in Germany, the R-Line Tiguan as a 1.5L with 150hp starts at 50k€/$58k. The EA888 one starts at 59k€/$69k maxes out at 77k€/$90k.
Drone30389@reddit
In the US the lowest price Golf (the R) is $48,000.
exolomus@reddit
Golf R starts at 56k€/$65k. Fully specced (without semi slicks) is around 75k€/$87k.
Drone30389@reddit
That's in Germany? What is the lowest price Golf you can get there?
exolomus@reddit
Yep, in Germany. European cars taxed much higher than cars sold in the US. Germany is on the cheaper end in terms of pricing.
The base Golf here is a 1.5 I4 6MT with 115HP. Starts at 29.395€/$34276.
In the Netherlands, it starts at 36.990€/$43132.
handymanshandle@reddit
Is the Golf GTI no longer a Golf? That starts at just under $32500.
Drone30389@reddit
I stand corrected. fueleconomy.gov lists GTI separately instead of under Golf.
Edgelordftwlol@reddit
Our prices in Europe are absurd. 77k is too much for a VW. That is GLC/X3 money
perennialpurist@reddit
Damn, 77k here in the US is almost GLE/X5 territory.
Edgelordftwlol@reddit
The X5M Comp is around 200k here for reference xp
Kawaii_Neko_Girl@reddit
Do keep in mind that Europeans are taxed on cars more than Americans.
Edgelordftwlol@reddit
Even disregarding that, the base, pre-VAT, prices are still considerably higher here in Europe than in the US. Not to mention that we have even lower trim levels than what’s available over there. European-spec German cars to have more options/compatibility with the different options than their US counterparts, nonetheless.
neelav9@reddit
I’d say that’s gonna be a great choice. Got the cx50 turbo and I feel that’s what these crossovers should come with as an optional engine around 250 hp. Good middle ground between performance and not a big hit on fuel consumption.
mkvii1989@reddit
How do you like the CX50? I keep wanting to get one for my next car but I hear a lot of people say the ride is pretty harsh.
neelav9@reddit
It’s pretty decent actually. It ain’t no luxury vehicle but the materials are upscale enough. The ride bit is true when you’re going over bumps and uneven roads. On the upside, the handling is great. I plan to get smaller wheels when the stock tires need replacing. When I switch to the winter tires the ride is much much better. Overall, it doesn’t drive like an average Joe crossover haha. That’s what I like about it.
mkvii1989@reddit
Do you have the premium plus or whatever? I want that one for the HUD and ventilated seats but I’ve really thought about going one lower so I still get the Bose but get the 19s instead of 21s.
neelav9@reddit
I’m in Canada so I got the GT turbo. Same as the premium plus I believe with a couple differences that I’m not too sure about. It sits below the meridian which is the top trim up north. The HUD and ventilated seats are a great feature.
mkvii1989@reddit
Yeah I have the HUD and ventilated seats in my car now, it would be tough to give them up. My wife has a CRV in the same trim as my Accord but it doesn’t have them and every time I get in I miss them. Lol
neelav9@reddit
lol I hear ya.
DetroitLionsEh@reddit
Makes sense. The EA888 is great for a commuter car
TroyFerris13@reddit
Just burns a shit ton of oil that VW labels as normal
Drone30389@reddit
Do they have to pay GM a royalty for that feature?
LewdDarling@reddit
Mine hasn't burned a drop in 5k miles and 2 track days on 5w-30
againstliam@reddit
I haven't heard or experienced that. Coolant leaks of course but not oil burning.
Ancient_Persimmon@reddit
The AP550 in the ID.4 is even better. $45k for a Tiguan seems like a lot.
vantafanta@reddit
The Tiguan starts at 32K and tops at 45k
Ancient_Persimmon@reddit
Yeah, the tested example is an SEL Turbo for $45k.
SizeableFowl@reddit
Cheaper that a GR Corolla
willpc14@reddit
Weird. That's more than the OTD price I paid for mine.
Ancient_Persimmon@reddit
Something tells me those two don't get cross-shoped very often.
SizeableFowl@reddit
I mean sure, but I think most people would be surprised to see a Corolla going for $50k. More of a point about how people’s expectations of what a car should cost are very different from the realities of inflation.
Ancient_Persimmon@reddit
I was comparing it to its sister within the same company though, not really complaining about inflation.
It's not super compelling compared to what else you can get in class for the same money.
aprtur@reddit
It's going to have some stiff competition from the new RAV4 GR Sport (I'd assume that's the competition, anyway - Turbo is the sporty config, right?). The RAV will be more efficient with the PHEV powertrain, faster (claimed 0-60 is over 1s quicker), arguably as practical, although the VW will probably have the edge in feeling more upscale on trim and is a smidge cheaper - which I suspect will get even cheaper at VW discounts, where PHEV RAV has been on wait lists.
SizeableFowl@reddit
I mean, I’d argue the class is defined by vehicles that are not very compelling. The 5 seat compact crossover shopper is, for the most part, looking for fuel efficiency, 5 or more seats, and tech features.
Ancient_Persimmon@reddit
Hence why this is a pretty bad value. It gets beat soundly in all of those metrics.
SizeableFowl@reddit
I’d say it meets the benchmarks needed. I don’t think this is significantly worse off than any other entrant in the category.
acEightyThrees@reddit
Is that really the name of the car? What a stupid long name. Why do they do that
ANYTHING_WITH_WHEELS@reddit
Model - Tiguan
Trim - SEL
Appearance package - R Line
Engine - Turbo
Could have just been a Tiguan R ... but the Tiguan R exists in the European market and comes with a big break kit and sport bucket seats.
Probably should have just been the Tiguan R-line Turbo. The SE trim will likely never get the tuned up engine.
rewardingsnark@reddit
Not bad compared to most compact crossovers, but VW to unreliable
FeemBleem@reddit
Yeah, VW shouldn’t really exist anymore.
rewardingsnark@reddit
Well that's a bit hyperbolic, they should improve their quality though
Combat_Wombat23@reddit
I reckon the top end trim with the good engine is always the one you want
xt1nct@reddit
I’m hoping these are not wanted. I can see myself picking one up, can’t be more unreliable than my cx70.
lamemonkeypox@reddit
Nope, don't want it
iatekane@reddit
Savage geese did a review in the new Tiguan (non-turbo model) and very positive.
Seems like a good car all around for the segment, would be nice to be able to option the better motor in the base trim though to get the power without the everything else.

RiftHunter4@reddit
Good. VW uses to be considered a premium alternative to the others. Glad to see someone making a decent interior.
