Do you think all the experienced guys have never fucked up before? We've fucked up plenty, want to know how much a street light costs? All you can do is learn from it and move on with more knowledge than you started with. No one was hurt, except your pride a little bit.
1st otr job i parked in a pay to park area and woke up to a boot 200$ to get it off. I took out a “ industrial mail box” that was 300$ , and i pushed in and broke another drivers headlight mounting points. Didn’t break the headlight itself funny enough. Oh and i broke the rear wind fearings off the back of my truck trying to hook up to a trailer that was too tall in the dark while it was pouring rain. All this was in 6 months of working for them. Needless to say they loved having me on board with them so much they gave me a extended vacation lol
I’ve had a trailer door unhook as I was backing into a dock and I crushed the top corner of it enough to keep it from closing. Found out it cost $12k. Oops😬
The other day Im making a tight right turn, button hook and everything, and my trailer was l still on its way to hit the damn pole. Had to go over the curb to the other on coming lane to make the turn. It was my monthly reality check for sure
Cases like that where I’m not sure, I just make all of the road mine. I pull a 3 axle side dump through neighborhoods and a 45ft spread axle step deck out in the oilfield. Sometimes you just eat every bit drive-able surface just to be sure.
💯💯💪🏽 players fuck up too!! I broke driver mirror alley docking into a pitch black hole with about 2inch clearance on each side at my first job hauling trash. 2yrs later got my own truck. In my OWN TRUCK took out my passenger steps on a yellow pole, and went head on with another Pete in my yard about 2yrs into being O/O. Just live and learn!
Ay imma tell u right now, mornings are the biggest accident times outside of bad weather times.
At least for me it is. After 5hrs of sleep, i feel like my head isnt really up and my body is just going through the motions without really paying attention to what im doing.
Anyway, you'll learn and you will be more aware next time. You probably wouldve been better off by just paying the guy like $500 cash on the spot to keep it off the record but thats just me.
Other driver was a dick, did the cop write you a ticket? It would go on you daq report from your company anyway and be on your insurance record. As long as the cop dudnt write a ticket you wont get points from it. If he did fight the ticket to get the points off.
Damn that sucks. I did something similar but I caused probably $2/3 k worth of damage. I offered them cash but they said no, so I reported it to my company. 20 minutes later they changed their mind (I guess the owner did or whatever) but I had already reported it so it was too late 😑. AND that was my 3rd incident in 4 months so I got let go.
I love trucking and I love OTR so I'm grateful for being back on the road and taking it slow and careful. G.O.A.L!!!
On my third day, driving through redwood forest, I didn't realize on some of the winding roads I would have to drive in the oncoming lane, clipped the trailer wheel on a tree.
One month later I picked up a loaded trailer and forgot to move the tandems forward. Got to the destination and the back of the trailer clipped a traffic light on a tight right turn into a single lane with cars waiting in the oncoming left turn lane. Traffic pole was dented but still straight up.
Four months in, backing into a spot rushing because I was running out of time and tired. The truck stop was all diagonal parking and I still have trouble backing into diagonal spots, my DOT bar got a big scratch on another rigs fender.
Watch your back cause I'm not giving up nine months in now.
For the first 2, the rim was bent and the tire was just dangling 😭. I had to call to get it fixed. I probably could've blamed a pothole for the first one though
And the other driver was right. He has to cover his ass man. Its a minor offense though. Everyone else is right. Early on we all make mistakes. Rubbed something for damage.
But what others aren't saying is yiu are a stabd up dude. Many drivers would cause damage and bounce. You are taking credit. Props to you on that. Thats a rare breed.
Other drivers an asshole. It seems , to me, that a lot of guys forgot they were new once.
The dirty looks and middle fingers and straight up signs of aggression I’ve seen. As I’ve struggled to get into a dock or park at a service plaza. Some guys seem to want to get physical. Because I “almost” hit them.
I just smile. The more aggressive they get, the more I smile. I’ve gotten out the truck a couple times, to address their dissatisfaction.
Never has anyone wanted to speak.
Even the trainer I had was a loud mouthed screaming asshole. He would get so pissed if he perceived a slight by another driver.
Thats why I go slow! There always something to learn and there are others out there who are worse than you. Take it easy on yourself.
I understand that’s not so easy for some people.
You got this. This is how you learn. Chalk it up to a lesson and move on.!
He sounds spiteful, at best. I want to be charitable and assume that maybe the other guy's had this happen to him a bunch of times, and he's had a bad day and just generally inclined to lash out. Officer has the right of it, though.
You should have a copy of his drivers license when you exchanged information. If the guy was being a real asshole like he took it personal on you you have enough information to be an asshole back to him at a different time in the future should you choose.
It’s a rough day, but at the end of the day it’s not an “I would have beat the train across the tracks if it weren’t for that damned pole trailer I was dragging.” Kind of bad day
Either he was tired, not paying attention, or really a new driver. Not monitoring where the trailor was in his side mirrors. If you catch in time, blast that country horn long and loud!
Garbage truck driver. Second day driving solo without a trainer, a part of my tailgate frame clipped the wheel well of a utility trailer that a yard work/landscaping company owned. Small business, dude didn't care, didn't even file a claim, he fixed it himself.
I self reported bc it was day 2 and my first CDL job. I was mortified. Before then I had never hit a single object. Thankfully, it's not even in my record because damage cost was $0.
Turned out that the dude who owns the trailer and the landscaping company's house is also on that route. I still see him whenever he's outside his house when I come to pick up his yard waste. He still gives me shit for it
First time alone yesterday, fucked up after getting distracted by a manager asking me to move over a inch. I had the landing gear down and everything. Forgot I disconnected the kingpin thing. So when I pulled forward trailer landed on tires. And hours before that it took me two hours to park successfully at my first stop. So much went wrong yesterday. I ran out of time. Stuck in Charlotte at a Home Depot. Sleepy. But I didn’t come this far just to shred my CDL over hardships. It will get easier with time I just know it will. Keep your head up
Keep your head up! Take your time and learn from your mistakes. Remember to G.O.A.L., even when you think you don’t have time. A lot of drivers will be more inclined to help if they see you actively trying.
I’ve been running solo for about a month now all over the west and now east and I don’t know how I ended up in this kinda stupid situation
But yea I will learn from it
I drive a mixer and have had a pretty wild accident. Was back in the same truck in a few days and catch hell all the time for being new or that I need to learn to drive. Truth is all those fuckers giving me shit have more than one incident themselves that were entirely avoidable. Learn from it and figure out how to not fall into too much self doubt.
I have definitky screwed up, i almost took a mirror off the other day thankfully there was no damage not even a scratch and the driver honked his horn before it could get that far. But i felt like a failure, and like giving up. But i took it as a lesson learned. This is a small mistake in The grand scheme of things.
Made it a year and a half without an accident and thought I was an amazing driver who would never fuck up. Then about 4 months ago I wasn't paying attention and destroyed a reefer unit. $3k claim. Mistakes happen. Learn from it and be extra cautious from now on. Complacency is what causes this shit.
You'll be fine. I had a student rip the side out of a trailer and he still had a job. Learn from this. Why did it happen and how you can prevent it from happening again.
The chrome bumper on a vato’d out lowrider S-10 pickup is a surprising $7k. I would have never have guessed that they are that expensive. And their lowrider lift on the front end is $22k. #s most people would never guess. I didn’t have to guess, insurance adjuster gave the answer I always wanted to know.
Wait. So you did a little hood damage to the KW??? Is this all the damage?? Seriously, that's nothing.
Never be in a hurry, always know where your tandems are, in the present moment headspace (I know these things because I caused $17,000 worth of damage my second week!!!!)
Like take a moment and take some breaths if you need to. Reboot your confidence and learn from your mistakes.
Don't worry bro. I'm only a year and a half in and I've hit 3 trailers backing up, totaled a car (guy was fine) hit 2 yellow pole things oh and hit a wall with the trailer trying to turn around in a tight space. You learn as you go! Just don't kill someone or you're fucked lol
Look, everyone makes mistakes. As long as nobody's dead or seriously injured, you'll be okay. All you gotta do is let this teach you how to be a better driver going forward
My first day took a tight driveway and rear wheels touched a guidwire base to a pole. Hydro line wobbled a bit and the whole factory was watching and called the office. Nothing broken or fell but it made the company news.
Can someone explain what happened I can’t tell if purple truck hit him or if he swiped the purple truck I’m also in aw how the bullbar cleared underneath
Shit happens. Ive bumped a few things in my years - as long as its a bump and not a hit or collision, you'll be fine. Learn from it and welcome to the hell of being lectured by safety department workers that have never even sat in a truck.
Do it , quit and drive a box truck or find something elso to do.
I am sorry but i wont sugarcoat this, people can get offended all day dont care, but this mistake is literally lack of paying attention how in the world on driver side do you not see that you are about to hit something
People that do these kind of mistakes tend to repeat them. 7 years of trucking ( company driver,oo,fleet manager etc)
has thought me that.
Fyi the repair on the hood on that KW is damn near 15000$ , i get it physical insurance will cover it but it also ends up as a claim on the company , this is 2500$ deductible and increases premiums for all of us.
Get out and fcking look its not that hard..
And if you are bad at backing in just drive into the parking spot damn it..
Terrible mistake
Imagine being a business owner and waking up to this. People just have lost all respect for other people’s equipment yet the demand to be paid like they own part of the company, smh trucking has become a 🤡🌎.
This probably isn't even the worst accident Prime had to deal with today. They'll have you sign some paper saying that you're really sorry and watch some videos. As long as you're not making a habit of this, you'll be just fine
I backed into the brand new Suburban of the facility manager of the warehouse I was delivering to. She was sitting in it at the time. Fun’t. She was cool but apparently, a Suburban bumper with sensors and all that is 7k from the dealership. My safety guy was shitting bricks.
You guys making actual decent income out there? I am a company driver so many short loads 150-450 miles. Where are the long haul loads like Washington taking apples to Page NC Walmart like back in the day
I’m not sure if this varies from state to state but in my state all lines are supposed to be 15ft off the ground to allow for us to pass under. If you snag one it’s the responsibility of the utility and not the driver.
It was in NJ and it was a sloped line. I came in the truck exit for the shipping center I was delivering to because I missed the entrance due to the property owner letting out overgrow and the side I would've come out on was high enough, but the side I was coming in on wasn't. Felt the truck lurch and didn't even realize I took it down until the store flagged me down. It was dark and between street lights, so I couldn't see it.
How did you miss his whole cattle guard, bumper and headlight and only catch the front of his passenger side hood? Honestly Sir, I am impressed and think you should get a pass on this mistake.
I’m 2 months in and had a Chicago run, yeesh. GPS took me down a low clearance road and took a right turn and got stuck on a light pole, it happens. Just learn from it and look forward.
I'm 8 years into trucking. I had an accident my first week in a truck stop from being overly tired. I wanted to quit then but I didn't. Now I kind of wish I did and got into another career. I'd be 8 years into it by now. Now I have two kids, a house, and too much at stake to switch careers and feel stuck trucking for the foreseeable future. If i could go back I'd quit that day.
i have been driving a year now. fucked up plenty. PLENTY i have made so many mistakes wasted my time others time got in dangerous situations. but you learn and grow. i know better now. and i still learn every day! i am proud of where i have come from. don’t give up
That ain’t even that bad man. My first one was similar. Fully load with cat food, tandems to the rear, turtle head poking, 5am so low light, crowded Pilot in WV. Didn’t swing wide enough for my tandems and chewed up the corner of a drivers rig while he was sleeping. Shit happens sometimes, but it’ll remind you to be more alert and cautious in the future.
Oh buddy. I picked up a 2 meg generator a few months ago. About a 90k lbs trailer. Don’t even want to think of how expensive the damn thing is.
I picked it up, backed under it, gave it a good thud. Hooked my hoses up, cranked up the landing gear. Kicked some tires, built up my air. And started rolling. 10 ft into moving I had to turn. And as I turned, the trailer didn’t. It just kept going straight. Tore my wheels up, bent my hydraulic tank, then started to roll when the lowered landing gear finally hit, punched a hole in the ground and stopped. Tilted like it’s about to fall over.
Had to get a tow truck to pick it back up just so I could get out from under it and crank the gear back down.
Had to get 4 tires replaced.. roadside. And they still let me hook back up and run it. Mistakes happen. Don’t make mistakes in vein, learn something from it.
In my case, it was the first time smacking the trailer didn’t fully lock the kingpin. And had I paid attention.. I would’ve noticed the release bar was only half in. Now I always double check the release pin, and crouch under it and see that it’s fully locked.
My “got lucky” situation was already a nightmare. I hate to think of what the outcome would’ve been had the trailer actually rolled over.
Like all I wanted to do as soon as it happened was crawl in a hole and die. So much shame and embarrassment. But I had to handle my fuck up. I had to get out and face the plant supervisor and the rest of the big wigs after calling my boss to tell him how bad I just screwed the pooch.
I could’ve stood there with my hands up and din nothing.
But I got on the phone, got trucks in route, a mechanic. So when those big wigs made it to me, and you know they’re on the way out, I had something more to say than just oops.
Point is, sometimes we make mistakes and believe others will think less of us.
But when you face that mistake head on, learn from it and grow. That actually makes people think far better of us. Like wow, he’s a stand up guy even when he totally fucks up
I didn't check the kingpin and dropped a trailer in the yard, took out a stop sign or two, took out a DEF pump with my bumper guard, bent a dock plate with the corner of the trailer, and those are just the things that were definitely my fault, there's been much more that were questionable or someone else's fault.
Own your fuck up man. And you literally have. All you can do in these situations and pay closer attention. Guy backed into me on Monday and he manned up and owned it. Makes you a true driver in the end when you can admit to the fuck ups
Well, you see, the problem with that is that you're making too much sense and it's destroying my sense of childlike wonder so I'm going to choose to ignore it and say you're wrong lmao jk
I always feel like total shit after a road incident. I'm sorry you had to be in this situation. Everyone makes mistakes, you'll learn from it and do better next time. In the meantime, nobody was hurt, everyone's vehicle is fully functional, your delivery can continue. Might be a financial hit, but that won't be anything you can't handle even if it sucks in the sort term.
Just give yourself time, have a hot shower, get some food and water in your system, and just handle things as they come. You'll bounce back from this, probably quicker than you think. You're not a bad driver, you wouldn't be driving non rigid if you were. Just a bad day and a shitty experience.
Take your time. Take your time. Take your time. Be gentle. Be gentle with yourself. Be gentle driving. Get into the habit of patience is key. F**k everyone else around you who acts like they're in a rush to lick their bosses' balls. Don't rush. Never rush. As soon as you think you need to rush, take it slower. No one is pressuring you. and the ball lickers are exactly that, just licking balls so never ever let anyone pressure you into rushing. I believe in you! You got this! All you need to do is learn from your mistakes, take your time, and be gentle. See you out here driver! We all need to help each other, and be less negative and mean to each other! 🫶🏽
We all have days like that and we all get into a few dings and scrapes in our first year or so. I took out a whole gate at a shipper (brand new and automated) because I was following old pavement markings and forgot I had a trailer.
Just be glad this damage was minor, brush yourself off, learn the lesson to be more careful next time. It's really okay. Companies handle accidents all the time and this was not even a bad one, mostly cosmetic. Their insurance will cover it. You're not a bad driver. Just had a bad day.
I'm a carhauler, hauling 4-10 cars at a time. Last place I was at we hauled new Corvettes from the plant. $1-1.5 Million in product on every truck. You had to be good, best of the best drivers to do that job.
Just kidding! We had MF backing into buildings, side swipe concrete poles, catch the truck on fire, fucking everything happened at that place.
I left that cartel a year ago.. man I miss the hard work ngl. Loading, making height, weight, choosing the “clean” routes lmao.
How is business lately?
Drive safe brother
That will take a new hood 10k or more in damages not counting the down time to get an estimate and have the hood put on. Hopefully he didn't dislodge the radiator that's another 3k
Who buys a new hood?
If its just the hood and grill, less than $2k for a like new takeoff, $500 for paint, then maybe 4 hours to install. Easily done on hometime.
Sure, if they're mechanical damage, that's another thing altogether.
I've ran over a hydrant and put one in a ditch happens. Ro everyone. Most experienced guy driven 40 years that I know said in his 2nd year of driving he was making a right turn at a light and a car got in between him to his right. The cop said truck driver at fault. And he still thinks about it 40 years later really bothers him then next year he smoked a deer in Nebraska I80 lmao . It's accidents they happen to everyone just have to slow down be more mindful fucking pay attention. Glad no one's hurt have seen way worse
Dude try getting written up for covering the inward camera long enough to take a piss while driving a day cab delivering fuel at 3am in places where nothing is open but cameras are everywhere.
Shiiiit. I once took a hood off of a truck parked next to mine because of a moment of distraction. Shit happens. Learn from it and get the fuck down the road.
So easy for you to say shit happens and it's no big deal cause you have almost no consequences from it. But for the owner of the truck or can easily be a loss of thirty freaking thousand dollars.
I swiped my trailer across another truck's hood, backed into and knocked down a light pole, put my empty trailer into a ditch, backed into an unoccupied car shoving it 3ft into the street, and knocked a car's headlight out when my trailer swung into their lane at an intersection.
All in my first 5 years of driving. I'm now 12 years in and accident free for the last 7. Didn't get fired at any of those jobs. You shouldn't lose yours. Take the L (because we all have them), learn your lesson and strive to be safe and vigilant every day.
I started my career with Werner. Ran through Heartland Express, JB Hunt, a local gas tanker gig, Yellow Corp, Estes, leased with Schneider, Crete and now I've been with Old Dominion for 5 years.
It’s ok to have the fleeting thought about wanting to quit. What separates the weak from the strong is not giving in to those thought and not bailing when things get tough. We’ve all made mistakes. This is an opportunity for you to learn and improve…or be weak and give up.
They should give you an award for managing to swipe the truck without ripping off the bull bars, how is that even possible according to the laws of physics.
The accident itself is no big deal.
But it takes an extreme lack of depth perception or carelessness to get in that situation in a parking lot, I dunno about you but when I'm 2 feet away from a car or truck my sphincter automatically clenches.
Either get new glasses prescription or slow way down in parking lots, %99 of trucking is cake when you take it SLOW, it's literally impossible to hit anything if you're creeping forward at 2 mph.
I encourage you NOT to quit but to take it as a personal challenge to be a safer driver.
I whacked stuff left and right during my first year. After the 1st year I haven't hit anything. It's been 8 years now. Shit happens man, not a big deal.
@AlcidzTV. We all mess up. I’ve had my CDL for more than 15 years. You can do everything to be safe and still. A few months ago, while negotiating a tough turn, I ran into a bum
Dude, the only time I have ever hit a truck he was parked on a curve, my ICT knocked of his hub seal and his metal bumper popped one of my tires. No other damage. I parked and we did the insurance things and I waited for roadside.
I was beating myself up just like you and was worried I would get fired and the dude chatted with me for a while and offered me a job. He was just like this shit happenes, you stopped and did the right thing by me and that's all he cared about.
Man I had my first (AND LAST) backing accident 2 weeks ago & I understand that feeling. I’m just glad the dude was able to laugh it off and helped me calm down. It sucks but you can bet your ass I’m gonna be doing better from here on out.
The fact that you're beating yourself up over it tells me you'll do better in the future. Take your time and as everyone is saying just learn from it. We need more drivers that actually care and continually improving.
Yeah saw it shortly after. Honestly OP didn't take dudes whole hood off so win in my book. Seen way worse. He didn't just "keep going" lol. Like damn, why isn't my truck going? Better gas it more! Type shit. Lol
When in doubt, gas it out only applies to adverse weather, especially snow and especially in straight shift trucks ... lol. But yeah, you probably right 🤣
Exactly, well said. You're gonna hit something eventually. Nobody got hurt, the most important thing. This is a learning experience. Op will be more careful next time. Newbies gonna newb.
Your good dude, I legit side swiped a pickup truck on my first week driving solo: https://imgur.com/a/rjTZ38V
It’s part of the gig, and everyone for the most part is understanding and fair about it. You learned a very valuable lesson about spatial awareness from this. So it can’t be all bad.
Everything will be Ok, every job has its moment where you learn from, and this is a Learning Moment, you stopped, and didn’t leave, so the Other Driver is Grateful for that alone. Just pay more attention, and when ever you feel like you are moving too fast, or Rushing, just slow things down, move on YOUR time, and at YOUR speed, don’t feel rushed by anyone..

Virel_360@reddit
You should have a copy of his drivers license when you exchanged information. If the guy was being a real asshole like he took it personal on you you have enough information to be an asshole back to him at a different time in the future should you choose.

Do it , quit and drive a box truck or find something elso to do. I am sorry but i wont sugarcoat this, people can get offended all day dont care, but this mistake is literally lack of paying attention how in the world on driver side do you not see that you are about to hit something People that do these kind of mistakes tend to repeat them. 7 years of trucking ( company driver,oo,fleet manager etc) has thought me that.

I’m not sure if this varies from state to state but in my state all lines are supposed to be 15ft off the ground to allow for us to pass under. If you snag one it’s the responsibility of the utility and not the driver.
Rag3QuitnRob3rtGame@reddit
It was in NJ and it was a sloped line. I came in the truck exit for the shipping center I was delivering to because I missed the entrance due to the property owner letting out overgrow and the side I would've come out on was high enough, but the side I was coming in on wasn't. Felt the truck lurch and didn't even realize I took it down until the store flagged me down. It was dark and between street lights, so I couldn't see it.

25_Unknown_Devices@reddit
25_Unknown_Devices@reddit
Like all I wanted to do as soon as it happened was crawl in a hole and die. So much shame and embarrassment. But I had to handle my fuck up. I had to get out and face the plant supervisor and the rest of the big wigs after calling my boss to tell him how bad I just screwed the pooch.
I could’ve stood there with my hands up and din nothing. But I got on the phone, got trucks in route, a mechanic. So when those big wigs made it to me, and you know they’re on the way out, I had something more to say than just oops.
25_Unknown_Devices@reddit

Surrxxchef@reddit
I didn't check the kingpin and dropped a trailer in the yard, took out a stop sign or two, took out a DEF pump with my bumper guard, bent a dock plate with the corner of the trailer, and those are just the things that were definitely my fault, there's been much more that were questionable or someone else's fault.
You'll be fine my boy

In the meantime, nobody was hurt, everyone's vehicle is fully functional, your delivery can continue. Just give yourself time, have a hot shower, get some food and water in your system, and just handle things as they come. You'll bounce back from this, probably quicker than you think. You're not a bad driver, you wouldn't be driving non rigid if you were. Just a bad day and a shitty experience.

Top_Recognition_1775@reddit
They should give you an award for managing to swipe the truck without ripping off the bull bars, how is that even possible according to the laws of physics.
The accident itself is no big deal.
But it takes an extreme lack of depth perception or carelessness to get in that situation in a parking lot, I dunno about you but when I'm 2 feet away from a car or truck my sphincter automatically clenches.
Either get new glasses prescription or slow way down in parking lots, %99 of trucking is cake when you take it SLOW, it's literally impossible to hit anything if you're creeping forward at 2 mph.

Yeah, the main thing is that you stopped before causing damage.
