Anchorages in NYC?

We’re coming down the Hudson and should be in NYC by tomorrow afternoon. It looks like 79th street is a no go. It looks like anchoring at the Statue of Liberty might be our only free option. We are willing to take a slip but it’s looking $$$$. Anyone have any hot tips for NYC for a few days? We will leave Tuesday morning for Cape May.

Although I haven’t been there since before Covid, I’ve used Liberty Landing several times over the years when coming through New York if I wanted to dock for a day or two and get ashore. It has never been cheap, but was pretty darn convenient and safe.
Anchoring by Statue of Liberty is OK but gets pretty bumpy at times.
When heading south I usually anchor behind Sandy Hook at the old Coast Guard station before jumping off to head down to Cape May. Depends on the wind, but it’s a pretty good anchorage and a great place to depart from.

That’s our plan to be there the night before we head out. Likely Wednesday morning along with some other Canadians going south. We all did our stepping in Catskill today.

Did you check with anyone? I live right there and I’m pretty certain it’s closed for renovations.

I passed by 79th st a month or two ago and it was completely cleared out. I think they might be renovating it.

I spent 3 weeks on a transient mooring at 79th st years ago (~2015). Absolutely the best way to visit the city. $30/night (iirc), great skyline view, easy subway access. It’s a shame it has been closed so long. Was I really that lucky getting a spot there? Never really occurred to me. We were at sandy hook and radioed to ask on a whim and they said there were a couple moorings open.

When transiting NYC we have stayed in Gravesend Bay, Brooklyn anchored off the Target Store in depths as suit your boat. There is a large boat anchorage, just tuck in closer to shore than the big boys.. Good holding good protection from everything except the west, and even that is not too bad iin typical conditions. Easy out to the ocean when you are ready to leave.

Thanks so much! Sounds like a good spot. We want to be huge dorks and anchor under lady liberty but will see how we are feeling. We will be coming in from Haverstraw at some point tomorrow before dinner. We plan on staging in Sandy Hook as we have a package arriving there. We plan on doing this trip annually so it’s good to have all this in our back pocket. I appreciate the time you took to weigh in :)

Used to be able to anchor behind the Tea Building between Hoboken and weehawken. No clue if it’s still viable/legal but maybe someone else can chime in
noo_maarsii@reddit (OP)
Hey thanks! I’ll see what the other locals say. Do I just search that? Got a coordinate?
djlawrence3557@reddit
40.75670, -74.02580 or thereabouts. Fire it up on a satellite map and you’ll see what it looks like. There’s shipyard marina just a bit further south in Hoboken. Might be worth a shot calling them (I’m sure they’re full) and straight up asking the dock master for some help. There’s also the Manhattan Yacht Club (NOT the NYYC, haha) around the corner in Paulus Hook, Jersey City. They might have some room at the inn. There’s another marina next door that could potentially help too

Oh sick! Thank you so much! We’re taking this plan under advisement for sure!

If you've never been there Hoboken is fun, every jukebox has at least 2 Sinatra CDs on it.

If you plan to stay in the city for a few days I'd moor in Sheepshead bay. Both Sheepshead Bay YC and Miramar YC offer transient mooring for $50 a night with launch services, dinghy docks, and shower facilities in the club house. Grocery stores, restaurants, line Emmons Ave and buses in front of the club go to subways that go into the city.

Plus one to this, I'm on the board at SBYC - let me know if you need any help or advice, OP!

Caven point is after SoL before VN bridge. Motor down a bit, you’ll get a free anchorage

Thanks so much!

Liberty Landing on the NJ side?
noo_maarsii@reddit (OP)
Yes, they’ve been mentioned a few times. They are pretty cost prohibitive for our current budget. We were really hoping for an anchorage with shore access.

Fair seas and winds to you Cap’n. Wish I could swoop in and buy you a beer!
noo_maarsii@reddit (OP)
Awful kind of you to say. Maybe we’ll post some sailing photos :)

Let me know if you get to Eleuthera. Fish fry at Governors Harbor on a Friday night is a must see
noo_maarsii@reddit (OP)
Excellent intel there! Will do!

Cool! Now I’m incentivized to make the stop 😁
wifehatesmefishing@reddit
I think most anchor behind the statue of Liberty. There's a fuel dock/Marina/small west marine nearby at Liberty landing as well
bernoulli33@reddit
You can actually tuck way further back by Pesin Drive and a boat ramp. It’s quite protected.
Cannoli_724@reddit
This looks interesting. What’s the depth/draft there? To go ashore, can you dinghy to the ramp and leave the dinghy on the dock / beach nearby securely? From google maps looks like there’s a breakwater there?
noo_maarsii@reddit (OP)
That’s a good tip. Will look at that on nav.
noo_maarsii@reddit (OP)
Ok thanks. This was one of our spots we are thinking of. Our main thing is we may want to go ashore and do some New York things.
JebLostInSpace@reddit
There's a little anchorage at Coney Island that is super well protected and an easy starting point to time the current and head south if you don't want to cross over to Sandy Hook. It's possible to land a dinghy, but I'm not sure I'd leave the boat unattended in there.
noo_maarsii@reddit (OP)
Yes, I think that’s where Sam Holmes ran aground or whatever it was. We’d love to check out the city but fine to miss it if it’s not meant to be.
JebLostInSpace@reddit
I don't know that story, but when I was there it was a pretty cool spot to overnight and stage for the run south. The entry is suuuuper narrow and I was watching people hand cast nets on the beach 30' away in knee deep water. But inside there's good room and excellent protection. Much more pleasant than the Liberty Island anchorage, but you don't get the views of Manhattan.
I've used liberty island as well. I took the dinghy into Liberty Harbor Marina, but even just parking the dinghy for a few hours cost like $80 there. Still, it was easy to get into the city and do the tourist thing. After doing it once I never felt the motivation to repeat that exercise.
noo_maarsii@reddit (OP)
Thanks for all the intel. We might splurge on spending 80 bucks to park our janky Tobin sport 😅. I’m willing to have a rocky sleep just to say I anchored at the Statue of Liberty. I am a tourist after all!
KMcB182@reddit
We anchored at the statue for lunch. That worked very well, then we trundled along.
I quite like Sandy hook outside of the city.
noo_maarsii@reddit (OP)
Ok cool. We are definitely going to Sandy Hook but would have loved a way to anchor and go ashore. That would be amazing if NYC had that in the future.
haroldslackenoffer@reddit
We stay at Atlantic Highlands and took the ferry one day into the city. Suggest that and a hotel for a longer stay.
noo_maarsii@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the tip!
acecoffeeco@reddit
Tie up for free in newtown creek. Would have to get into the east river. There’s transient docking at suny maritime but that’s about 10 miles east.
noo_maarsii@reddit (OP)
Ok thanks! I’ll have a look. We are there for a few days so we can muck around.
Human_Management8541@reddit
Sandy hook.
noo_maarsii@reddit (OP)
Yes that’s a plan for the night before we go. We wanted to check out the city without doing an epic mission.
