Hell no, we didn't appreciate Sade enough! She was for grown-ups, and we were children. We liked her, but we didn't understand her. It wasn't until my mid to late twenties that I began to truly appreciate what Sade was offering us. It feels like every decade, her mystery deepens. As if the wisdom of age allows me to treasure her complexities more than I ever could before.

I was living in Arcata in 94. Every year the apartment complex would get a new batch of college kids. You’d mostly get kids from SoCal with Bob Marley flags and the start of white kid dreds. But one year we had this girl move in next door and she played Sweetest Taboo all day and all night. I do not nor will I ever listen and certainly never appreciate Sade.
