Time after time lyrics...

Really struck me as funny the other day when came on the radio. I remember when it came out and it had a very specific meaning to me, but the other day when I was listening to it through my old ears it struck me how differently the meaning could be taken at my age and I just started laughing and could not stop.
For example:
If you're lost, you can look, and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting
Time after time
When you young that verse has very different mean than when you are older.

This song makes me weep.
Not gonna lie, it hits me different now knowing she made it about her mother.
PocketDeuces@reddit
It was actually written by the guy from the Hooters.
speeder61@reddit
they wrote it together..he is singing backup on it
cupcakebuddies@reddit
John Travolta is singing on Time After Time. Are you saying John Travolta is from Hooters?
DPax_23@reddit
Travolta is not singing on Time After Time. Rob Hyman from the Hooters cowrote the song and sings backup.
speeder61@reddit
no John Travolta sings on Lets do the Time Warp again
A_Gringo666@reddit
Who says it was about relationship breakups. Not her mother. He's got every right to say what the songs about. He corrode it.
Miss_L_Worldwide@reddit
I wish I didn't know that and I'm going to try to forget it because I really ruins the song for me.
pdx_mom@reddit
I never knew that! It makes me cry too.
Unexpectedly99@reddit
Yeah I was listening to an interview with her on XM and she was like "everyone believes this was written about a romantic relationship, but that's just how the record company wanted to spin it".
Same with True Colors
finny_d420@reddit
Have you seen her *Finding Your Roots" episode? She talks about how her mother and other women in the family had to "give up their dreams" because of the times. Her mother encouraged her to go for it and don't let anyone hold her back.
Unexpectedly99@reddit
I haven't, I will look for that.

Better than pink Floyd's Time
And then one day you find Ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run You missed the starting gun.

I watched the Cyndi Lauper thing on CBS a couple of weeks ago and almost forgot how beautiful that song is. I was sobbing while singing along.

I was thinking the other day about how dumb some of the lyrics to Rocket Man are:
“Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids In fact, it's cold as hell And there's no one there to raise them if you did”
Gave2Cents_NowBroke@reddit
Yes, it sounds silly out of context and taken literally.
A good song can fit many people's interpretations, but rocketman always seemed to me about a man who travels for work all the time. His family thinks he's the man, but maybe his job isn't as powerful and glamorous as his family thinks.
Saying Mars isn't a place to raise kids, to me says his kids are raised in a cold and isolated environment because he's not home with his family. Or that he's always away from his family so they might as well be on Mars for all practical purposes.
I do think there are many songs with dumb lyrics, but I do not think Rocketman falls in this category.
I think it's still relevant even for people who don't travel for work, but maybe just work too much. Pondering the need to support the family you love, but sacrificing time to spend with the family you love. Wondering if the choices you make will alienate the one's you are working so hard to make their lives better. Knowing they are proud of you and look up to you, but there's a disconnect because close bonds come from time spent.

I had the opportunity to hear this song performed live. Cyndi Lauper was opening for Cher during her “Believe” tour. It’s been mumble years …
Able-Contest-8984@reddit
My mom went to that show, and I stayed home--with my kid, too broke to see two goddesses in concert, mad... 😂
MaleficentExtent1777@reddit
She also performed it live with Patti LaBelle!!!

One of my favorite tours of all time. I took my sister and we got upgraded seats.
pdx_mom@reddit
Oh man I wanted to see them both on that tour but never went. Saw Cyndi last fall tho she was amazing.
stigbugly@reddit
I can’t deal with that song. When I was in the army back in 1984, I got reassigned to a different post and had to leave my girlfriend behind, as she was still in training. We had planned to stay in touch and get back together when she finished training and for about three months, we corresponded with one another. On with the song. When I left her at the airport, I boarded the plane and was apparently visually upset. A kind stewardess handed me a pair of earphones (there were no other ways to listen to music or the onboard movie, if there was one). I plugged them in and this song came on. Broken inside for the whole flight. Little did I know that despite our corresponding with each other, we would never get back together again. Still gives me that empty feeling when this song comes on to this day.
Mail_Order_Lutefisk@reddit
What a cliffhanger. So what happened to the girl? Married to her in ‘87?
stigbugly@reddit
No. She stopped sending letters after about 3 months. Told me she found someone new and gave me his name(who does that?) told me he was abusive and wouldn’t let her see her friends. I took that as a plea for help so I never stopped looking for her after that. Apparently she slept with this guy and never told me she got pregnant by him. The timeline was so close that it could have been my kid. I found all of this out a couple years ago when meatloaf died. He was her favorite artist and it made me do yet another search for her and finally after almost 40 years I got my answer. She had died from MS in 2015, and left behind two sons. One was possibly mine so I got hold of him and sent him a dna test. Came out negative for a match which means she didn’t even wait a week before she slept with the other guy. Why did I expend so much energy on someone who was so insincere toward me? Idk, chalk it up to being 18 and in the army I guess. I still talk to the “son” from time to time, we have a common ground together (he had to deal with issues from her all his life).
pagit@reddit
Hope you have someone special in your life and/or or living a good and satisfying life
stigbugly@reddit
I do! Thanks for mentioning that. It took a long time to find “the one” but she and I (my current) have been together for almost 18 years. Previously I was married for about 17 and it wasn’t good for either of us. This time seems to be the right way.
Stardusk_89@reddit
I saw her in concert (and made her instagram) in Milwaukee. She’s an icon. What a beautiful soul.
Elynn6969@reddit
I saw her this summer too! Amazing! She is just a beautiful person.
kramwest1@reddit
I know I can’t afford it, but I would love to catch Cyndi’s Vegas residency next spring.
Elynn6969@reddit
It hits me hard. At this point in our lives we really know who those people are.
Designer-Mirror-7995@reddit
Still hits the same for me as it did when I was a teen.
Hoon0967@reddit
Yes, especially when you’ve had a person in your life that has done all of those things for you time after time. Got a great wife and I hope she can say the same thing about me, because I will still be waiting…
dplbv@reddit
The cover of the song by Everything But The Girl was our wedding first dance song.
So for me, it will always be a romantic song (regardless of the original intention).
30 years and counting. . .
argherna@reddit
I first hearted this soon after my friend died in an accident. It still hits hard and never left me.
ScreenTricky4257@reddit
Cyndi Lauper is so much more than GJWHF.
Turbulent_Tale6497@reddit
She also Bops
A_Gringo666@reddit
How?
It means exactly the same to me as it did 30 years ago (or
nonotburton@reddit
It goes from being a song about the confusion and failures of youth, to being about dementia and the need for life Call/Life Assure bracelets (help, I've fallen and I can't get up!)
A_Gringo666@reddit
Since when?
It's a love song.
TapeFlip187@reddit
About her mother.
A_Gringo666@reddit
No, it's not about her mum. Had nothing to do with her mum.
Cyndi Lauper and Rob Hyman (co-writer) were having problems in their respective romantic relationships at the time of writing.
Brokenchaoscat@reddit
Cyndi Lauper has stated more than once that Time After Time was about her mother.
A_Gringo666@reddit
Everything I've seen or heard it was about her relationship with boyfriend and manager David Wolffe finishing
TheReadyRedditor@reddit
😂 It’s insinuating when we get older we get lost and fall easier.
Important_Crew8890@reddit
I thought it was about sex. Tbf back then I thought all songs were about sex :)
Sepa-Kingdom@reddit
Oh goodness, I love that song, but haven’t thought about the lyrics since it first came out.
Just placing it into the context of my FiL looking after my MiL who has dementia is bringing tears into my eyes. He has such love for her.
Kamimitsu@reddit
I guess OP is thinking it's about dementia/brain fog, but honestly, re-reading it now and I can't help but think of mortality and death... which we'll all find in the end waiting for us.
nowandnothing@reddit
Still one of my favourite songs, that and True Colours. Cindy was so underrated.
TapeFlip187@reddit
I don't get it - why is it funny?
FrostnJack@reddit
When I was a youngin' I played/sang a cover of TAT, True colors, and a bunch of other Lauper tunes in cover bands. I had a higher tenor range than our frontman so I got to belt out some cool shit when they'd let me out.
otiswestbooks@reddit
I remember it from the movie of the same name in 1979. Saw it in the movie theater for my friends 11 year old bday party
clampion12@reddit
Fri, she wrote it with Rob Hyman from the Hooters!
Pattycakes1966@reddit
Yes. Saw them perform it a couple of years ago. And saw Cyndi Lauper perform it with John Legend at Hollywood Bowl a couple of months ago.
Unlucky_Profit_776@reddit
My haircut is modeled on her in that video
youeatthatstuff@reddit
We used this song at my sister’s funeral. It was perfect there, too.
upnytonc@reddit
I love this song. I always thought it was about romantic love, but when I became a mom the words took on a different meaning. Now I feel like this is what a parent would say to their child.
Beginning_Power1843@reddit
Miles Davis does a great version as well.
Bubblehead_81@reddit
Maybe I'm just tired but I feel like you're being obtuse. I don't get what you're getting at. Can you help an old tired guy understand? Because I love that song.
ImaginationEcho@reddit
I think the OP means we now forget where we put things and have to look for them. And maybe our significant others are fall risks and we have to catch them. It's a little obscure, sure, but...dark humor. At least that's how I took it. I love the song too.
Double_Fisherman6817@reddit
Funny. Dark, but funny.
