Even though I think the UK won't become a worse place without 4chan its fucking insane that they are restricting internet use the way they are doing right now. This type of censorship shouldn't be allowed and letting private companies or random organizations store sensitive data is braindead and I hope some politicians get fucked in the eventual data breaches so they might actually do something about it. But let's be real politicians probably don't need to comply with the checks for websites like wikipedia(which also requires verification) because of the inherent security risks

harrsid@reddit
Circular confusion. I was referring to the statement that the people really care, and I was pointing out that the only time people turned their fortunes around were via violent revolutions.
TheGalator@reddit
Circular confusion indeed.

No one is going to feel strongly about it till its a full on police state (i.e digital IDs are implemented)
_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_@reddit
Digital IDs are already implemented and used across all gov.uk services.
The thing everyone’s so angry about is a proposal to use them for the right-to-work checks, which again, are already implemented.
Citiz3n_Kan3r@reddit
They do not have my face / biometric data. Thats why ppl are upset
_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_@reddit
They do if you have a passport or drivers license.
Citiz3n_Kan3r@reddit
That isnt connected to the police anpr data...
_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_@reddit
Um, the police can indeed lookup your vehicle registration and see your license data.
Citiz3n_Kan3r@reddit
Sorry, facial recognition*
I dont understand. Right to work checks already exist, what makes you feel this would be different?
Why are you advocating for it?
_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_@reddit
My point is that it's not different. People are being manipulated into being angry about nothing, to push them back to the right-wing parties.
I'm not advocating anything except critical thinking.
Citiz3n_Kan3r@reddit
Any opportunity for my data to be easily available to hackers / the incompetance of Government is a good opportunity for me to be upset

Boris2509@reddit
The point is that it's very hard to start organizing when the Nazis are already in power and legislated all your rights away. The only way to keep your rights is to actively defend them. That's why every infringement has to be taken seriously and be met with heavy resistance.
Perchfield@reddit
That’s so dramatic.

AbabababababababaIe@reddit
To be honest it kind of is?
The police can arrest you for being loud at a protest, or supporting the wrong organisation, or such a number of things that they barely need a reason.
Websites can effectively be turned off for just the allegation that they’re hosting porn, and porn has always been the thin end of the wedge for censorship.
Free speech in the uk is all but dead
Slot_it_home@reddit
What a load of absolute bollocks.
The compare the current UK to Nazis is the most terminally online idiocy I’ve seen so far on Reddit.
It’s actually pathetic.
Someone has to provide proof of age online = the greatest atrocity of modern man.
feioo@reddit
The term Nazi gets overused when people mean authoritarian. Nazi Germany was probably the most well-known authoritarian state, but there's plenty of space on the spectrum between "basic authoritarian state" and "authoritarian state that's also bent on world conquest and genocide". And there's a fair amount of space between "free and fair democracy" and "basic authoritarian state". Imo the US and the UK have been in a slow race rightward towards that basic authoritarian state for a few decades now, although the US has pulled sharply ahead in recent years. As someone from the US, I sure wish more people had paid attention to the warning signs of encroaching authoritarianism earlier, even if they felt a bit hyperbolic at the time.

Szwejkowski@reddit
If you can't see how this sort of thing can snowball, you haven't been paying attention. The Imgur thing is an inconvinience. Not being able to access some safety and support information a bit more of a problem. Needing to dox yourself to access basic services is a big problem when all your data ends up in the hands of data brokers and hackers during the inevitable security breach.
Then there's the chance of Farage getting his slimy, webbed hands on power - suddenly you can't access all kinds of news and he didn't even have to try to get a new bit of legislation passed, because it's already there.
Slot_it_home@reddit

Then do it over another issue. That's why he didn't weaponize the ICC and isn't pressuring app stores to ditch apps they don't want Americans to use to track ICE
irteris@reddit
imagine thinking it is ok to track law enforcemnt agents so violent protesters can threaten their lives.
TraditionalGap1@reddit
Imagine understanding how the law in your own country works.
irteris@reddit
I think I know that threatening law enforcement and obstructing its operations is a violation of the law. you should know a lot about how unchecked inmigration destroys a country, canada is barely surviving right now.
TraditionalGap1@reddit
You're right, those things are violations of the law.
People do that. The app doesn't do that, which is why there's a problem banning it. If that's the logic you want to apply to banning the app, that it 'enables' Americans who may choose to break the law in those ways, well I assume you also want to ban other social media platforms that Americans use to communicate this information to each other?
And you don't see any speech issues with that?
So again, imagine understanding how the law in your own country works.
irteris@reddit
I think when you call your app ICE BLOCK it is clear what your intention is with sharing the information in the app. Don't play dumb games -- facebook or twitter primary use is not to help people evade federal law enforcement.
TraditionalGap1@reddit
And this is why I keep bringing up understanding how the law in your own country works. It isn't against the law to communicate where law enforcement officers and efforts are located. What some users may choose to do with that information does not make those communications illegal.
irteris@reddit
spare me the technicalities. Do you believe ICE officers have the right to be able to fulfill their lawful duties and enforce inmigration laws without threat to personal harm to them and their families. Do you believe migrants without any lawful right to be in the USA should be deported. I already know the answers, but i am just giving you the chance to show your true interest. It is beyond rich from someone whose government will happily police speech in the name of "inclusivity" and "prevention of hate speech" to be claiming that taking down a TOOL for evading law enforcement is somehow infringing on free speech.
TraditionalGap1@reddit
Buddy, how do you think the law works? The law is all about technicalities. You're making moral judgments and moral arguments and that's just not how the law works. 'Spare me the technicalities' would mean sparing the law. The thing that decides what is an infringement on free speech, not your personal moral opinion.
irteris@reddit
I am not making a moral judgement. There is no law hat says you MUST be allowed to have access to tools to evade law enforcement. I am pretty sure there are laws that explicitly forbid obstruction of law enforcement. I'm sure if the app owner wants to fight that there is plenty to be discovered if he has to submit his personal emails and communications with regards to what his intentions are with the app. Saying that ICE officials must be allowed to discharge their duties as law enforcement is not a moral judgement, that is exactly what the law says.
TraditionalGap1@reddit
You're making the mistake of assuming that the app would be considered to be obstructing law enforcement and the courts have ruled that simply reporting on the location of law enforcement officers and communicating their location is not obstruction. That's why Waze is considered legal. That's the law.
You're right, there's not. There is a law you MUST be allowed to report the location of law enforcement officers. Which, again, is why Waze and legal and these apps are legal. It's considered protected free speech (being able to publish truthful information in the public interest of public events).
Rindan@reddit
I watched a bunch of ICE agents tackle a man in a giraffe suit standing peacefully on the sidewalk calling them mean names. The government is currently trying to exert direct control over what universities can teach, and they want journalist to make loyalty pledges. Paramilitary in full tactical combat, masks to conceal their faces, and fucking camouflage in a city are actively trying to intimated peaceful protestor when they are not directly attacking them. I think the UK is lost honestly. It is clearly going toward full dictatorship. Taokan@reddit
This is kinda how I feel about some of the porn censorship efforts going on in certain bible belt states in the US. They claim it's to protect children, but the idea that they need to collect and tie personally identifying information to who visits a porn site is a non starter for many, especially after the tea app breach showed just how quickly that information can become public knowledge. And meanwhile the thing that might actually protect children: releasing the Epstein files and holding actual pedophiles, sex traffickers and their clients accountable: yea can't do that.
Boris2509@reddit
yeah if people like epstein and his clients actually faced justice the "protect the kids" narrative would maybe be somewhat believable but the very same people shouting protect the kids are often pedophiles themselves and maybe if they tried preventing schoolshootings instead of just sending thoughts and prayers we'd believe they cared about a child after it left the womb. Its just a front because who doesn't want to protect kids? they make arguing against their policies sound like defending sex criminals in the hope people won't dare and point out that their policies are useless at actually protecting kids and are just a way to get a foot in the door of encryption and free use of internet.
pacowek@reddit
Didn't they specifically carve out an exception for UK politicians? I thought I remembered reading that.

I find it so interesting that people still think that this is the late 90s where the internet was this new a novel thing that was under the government's radar. Every single government in the world claims the right to regulate everything within their borders. Why should the internet get any kind of special treatment?
This is not even the internet of the late 90s anyways. You look at the most trafficked websites and it's all social media brain rot. Regulate it to shit I don't care. Anything worth preserving is already dead.
TacticalNuker@reddit
Exactly, everyone knows that freedom of speech is overrated anyway. Let the people in power control what can be said, so that nobody could share any "dangerous" and "radical" ideas. It's not like even a single government would use censorship to remain in power and control the population.
kimana1651@reddit
Governments across the world already do that and everyone seems fine and happy with it? Europe and the UK are full of anti-free speech laws, are we just going to ignore those?
Also you don't even need the government to do it, just look at Reddit, it's already turned into a pisshole of censorship. Youtube just released info that they were removing videos for Bieden. How does adding the government on top that bother me?
But yes, if you want to avoid having your government regulate the internet that's probably going to take a constitutional change. As I said they, they already have the authority to regulate it. Hating it is not going to help, get a plank on a platform.
Boris2509@reddit
constitutions are mostly stuff the goverment says it can't make laws about lmao. some things like freedom of expression are very important and touching them is a very slippery slope that rarely ends well. and people act like its the late 90s because most politicians still act like its the late 90s. a lot of the time they genuinly don't understand a lot of stuff about the internet because they just never bothered. when politicians do the most braindead stuff as often as they do you can't help but think they don't know what the fuck they're doing. stuff like databreaches and identity theft still isn't taken seriously when it ruins tonnes of lives.
And i totally agree on the social media regulation. after that 60 minute facebook whistleblower revealing that the algorithm is tuned to make people angry, frustrated or annoyed every politician who wants to help regular citizens should've called for regulation and oversight in the design of such algorithms. letting companies create systems that let brainrot, misinformation ragebait flourish is insane and should've been banned a long time ago. Humans are sometimes too stupid for their own good. those companies have teams dedicated to exploiting every small part of the human brain. the greatest minds of this generation are working on getting people to waste time on their platform and click on ads instead of actually trying to better the world. But having people ID themselves when they want to access wikipedia is a terrible idea

The UK has always been a draconian shithole. I had these opinions 20 years ago when I was a teenager and still do.

TserriednichThe4th@reddit

I_Will_Eat_Your_Ears@reddit
I'm sorry I was mean to you, but look, the UK clearly isn't draconian. It scores decently in various human rights indices with better scores than the US. And teenagers are often idiots that tend to see things in black and white, whereas once their brains develop, they get a better handle on nuance.
GranaT0@reddit
Lmao, you criticise a black and white view of the world immediately after admitting you think UK isn't draconian, because SOME of what it does is canceled out by OTHER things it does in their TOTAL score on a human rights index.
If this is your handle on nuance, I hope you still have some years left to develop it.
I_Will_Eat_Your_Ears@reddit
What do you think draconian means?
GranaT0@reddit
What do you think it means? Because either you don't know the definition, or don't know the regulations they've introduced.

I_Will_Eat_Your_Ears@reddit
Haha! Well, the original Athenian laws from which we derived the word draconian involved things like the death penalty for petty theft.
This post is about a website (that regularly hosts obscene material) getting "banned" for non-payment of a regulatory fine. It doesn't feel excessively harsh.

This does not feel like that, though. That is point blank the only reason why your country experiences this much gun violence. Not because of a website. This issue does not exist anywhere else on the planet, just yours. The rest of the planet figured out how to prevent mass shootings in their countries.
The fact that people still think there is any other possible reason than the fact that guns are available to purchase in your country is absolutely asinine to me. I live in Europe and the very concept of owning firearms is entirely alien here. It is incomprehensible. There is absolutely no reason for civilians to have a firearm in my mind, I've never once thought that I needed one.
You guys are several steps ahead, arguing about regulation and background checks while we're still over here wondering why the fuck civilians can even BUY a gun in the first place. We're still at the first step, do you understand? WHY can you even have a gun in the first place? That's absolutely nuts to me!! How is this even a debate?
Civilians do NOT need guns, holy fuck.
Somedude593@reddit
Paid lobbying will not get rid of firearms. Americans want buy and own them. Its a very vocal minority of americans that want to do away with firearms.
IntrovertRegret@reddit
I'm sure there's tons of Europeans who would love to buy and own firearms for whatever bullshit reasons they can think up. But they can't, because guns are banned in EU countries!
So, instead of doing the whole, "we've tried nothing and we're out of ideas", routine, get to work on banning guns. Paid lobbying will basically destroy the ability of your gun corporations to fight you on this. Will it happen overnight? No. But can it actually happen? Yes.
Somedude593@reddit
You misunderstand, i will fight against guns being banned personally until the day i die. I am against you.
IntrovertRegret@reddit
Oh, I see. You're willing to let any number of children die just so you can keep your guns. You are fundamentally insane and disconnected from reality if you think you need firearms in modern civilization and I genuinely hope they finally ban guns in the U.S so it can join the rest of the modern world.
I think there's no point in discussing anything further with you.
12bEngie@reddit
4chan has a lot outside of like, /b/, /pol/, /r9k/, and /fit/ which are the cesspools for the rightoid shit. There’s countless other boards fully separated from that shit
FinancialEvidence@reddit
They are and they aren't, you are still going to get racist comments on boards like /k/, /o/, etc. It's obviously not as common, but long threads will almost always have them used casually.
Pretend-Focus-8337@reddit
At this point I feel like Reddit and the like can be just as fucked up as the old imageboards, albeit more hidden in plain sight
Fritzkier@reddit
I mean yeah, have you seen those racist Instagram reels? The comments there also don't help unfortunately.
potatoesarenotcool@reddit
Brick by brick
MengaMango@reddit
For every incel loner grommed by ~~the CIA~~ 4chan there's atleast ten thousand more brianrotting on tiktok, desperate for attention of Instagram, groomed on Discord, and all of the above on Twitter and Reddit. There's no bad and good sites online barring the ABSOLUTE extremes, internet is no place for the unsupervised young.
i_make_orange_rhyme@reddit
I think it's a fine line between moderation and just pushing people into darker corners that are more circle jerkish.
For example if Trump didn't get banned from Twitter he wouldn't have made truth social
Idiot_of_Babel@reddit
Lmao.
They would have shot up the school 4chan or not.
You know websites are accessible worldwide right? How come it's just the states that can't keep it together?
Kreth@reddit
4chan is nothing... fuckin all social media is the evil... fucking breeding grounds for just the same inane argument, people where always like that but in isolation they arent that bad, with social media they can connect and actually do damage.
wq1119@reddit
This isn't 2015 anymore, by now Twitter is much, much worse and even more vile than 4chan itself, 4chan is much like reddit, it has niche and specific boards for anime, video games, food, animals, etc.
AngryAlternateAcount@reddit
I have IRL friends that I started talking to over 15 years ago from the automotive board. We'd meet up once a month and drive different roads around our area.
AshamedAttention727@reddit
Me too. I met someone on /tv/ in like 2010 who I regularly see now. I think it was a horror movie thread, good times :')
RydderRichards@reddit
4chan is responsible for the school shootings in my country is the boldest take I've heard this year
GravitationalEddie@reddit
I'm just gonna stroll over there and see what they're saying about it.
No, I'm not.
BendicantMias@reddit
Oh yeah sure, blame 4chan for that and not your own broken society and lack of gun control...
weeboards@reddit
wait until you see the rest of the internet
shewel_item@reddit
the alt-right pipeline is, and always was, fake news and outrage porn aimed at terminally online leftists with Palantir precision; ICE is real, though, and you're left, still, holding this bag, to this day. That's a gapping cope you have to cross before you can touch back down to reality.
Digital ID checks is a conservative wet dream in theory, but it's just a different version of a journalist ID, which was supported by leftist politics (at least, here, in America) when you call it by that, or look at it like that historically. In any case, the current flavor which is to protect children is mostly right-wing I would say.
4chan is not a hollowed protector of anonymity. The people moderating know who you are if you don't use proxies and VPNs and the like. And, they're not as politically neutral as you would like just because they seem wacky.
Zipa7@reddit
That isn't what's happening though, 4chan isn't going to be effected in the slightest, and all that will end up happening is that some UK residents won't be able to visit the website.
The people who want to visit it from the UK will continue to do so, because the UK ISPs already ban certain illegal content already like piracy, and its not hard at all to bypass and is well documented how to do so.
EvilNoobHacker@reddit
i know that, which is why I have that whole second part.
itsaride@reddit
This ordinarily wouldn't be a problem because but 4chan bans posting and commenting with them turned on and the IP range bans are effective. I'll miss contributing to /g/ (technology) and mocking the racists and MAGAs on /pol/.
GranaT0@reddit
Yeah, it's ridiculous. As bad as the major boards got since 2016, it's still often a better place to ask questions and have casual conversations due to the forum format and lax moderation.
I'm thinking of setting up a mini PC abroad and using it as a personal VPN for shit like this. You could easily do this with a VPS service and Tailscale, it's a lot easier than I thought. Since you're a /g/ent I'd recommend setting up something like that.
itsaride@reddit
I have seedbox that come with OpenVPN. I haven't tried that yet but will give it a shot. I may go the VPS route.
GranaT0@reddit
Nice, try WireGuard at some point, it's a lot faster for me (at least on Mullvad)
azriel777@reddit
Truthfully, UK/EU is going to ban EVERYTHING that isn't pure Pro Labour (or whatever puppet government is in power) Dictatorship propaganda. 4Chan is just the first, but its going to be everything.
I_Will_Eat_Your_Ears@reddit
Such a stupid take.
This isn't a government action. Ofcom is an independent communication regulator.
The UK/EU are very different.
I could go on
GranaT0@reddit
Independent, lmao
It was given authority by the UK government, and thus the government is directly responsible for its actions. Ofcom fines, enabled by government regulation, and resulting in companies owing money to the government, are 100% government action.
Please don't go on.
lost-associat@reddit
Seems like a very unsocial decision from a socialist party. They should change their name because this is not socialism.
Blarg_III@reddit
censorship is not a policy unique to any governing ideology, and it's not incompatible with socialism either.
fouriels@reddit
Labour have always been very authoritarian, particularly after Blair 'refounded' the party. It's why there was a big exodus to the Lib Dems in the 00s.
BendicantMias@reddit
Nah. Just amend a 'National' in front of the 'Socialist'. There, fixed! xD
SmartManagerGuy@reddit
EU politics is largely very different from UK politics.
And EU law provides similar protections on civil liberties for member states as the constitution and have their own courts judging EU-law which UK is no longer subject too.
ZeerVreemd@reddit
Brexit was not stupid, it was done as bad as possible to set an example.
AlashMarch@reddit
4chan is toxic, bit tiny. Sites like Twitter are far worse when it comes to spreading radiczlization. Of course, the government is doing this because they love censorship and want to preserve their own narrative. It is disgusting seeing the Labour under Chairman Starmer proudly take Britain down the path of online censorship.
MidnightNinja9@reddit
No it's not lol. Twitter is nothing compared to 4chan. In 4chan only like 10% of content is ok, the rest is full of angry incels and other creeps. Twitter is far, far safer, on Twitter all everyone does is share their own opinion without restrictions
JuanchiB@reddit
You think 4chan is just /b/ and /pol/?
Captain_Strudels@reddit
Like 1/3 of posts comes from /pol/, /v/, and /b/ alone. It's definitely not insigificant
8jose8@reddit
? /vg/ is bigger than /v/ and sometimes even bigger than /pol/, also i would say that /vt/ is bigger than /b/, 4chan is not the same as it was 10 years ago lol
GranaT0@reddit
https://4stats.io/
Damn, you're right. In the last few years /pol/ was at the top and /vg/ way further down whenever I checked. I wonder what's driving all that traffic there.
JuanchiB@reddit
Yes, but saying that 90% of the site is angry incels is peak "the hacker known as 4chan".
Captain_Strudels@reddit
I get the sentiment and you don't need to convince me that there are spaces on 4chan with (relatively) sane users engaging in hobbies etc, even on the aforementioned boards. I think it's still fair to say that on the whole the platform is really toxic, even in the more normal spaces. We can probably agree there's some truly vile things that get posted so frequently that 4chan and twitter are incomparable
warrara@reddit
And reddit is nothing like these, because there are basically 5 subreddits, and no smaller ones.
Captain_Strudels@reddit
You're right. A social media platform with small dark corners is the exact same as a platform where the biggest boards are also its most vitriolic, almost like that is a selling point to its users
warrara@reddit
And bots are rampant here. Say anything bad about a certain country bombing people in the larger subs, which the algorithms push to millions of people, get banned. Thats ok. Control of media, and masses, fine by me. But hey, on 4chan someone said the N word and there incels that dont like women. Much more worse.
https://youtu.be/gnfhmL6oxn0?si=bXvwiIPWEtW0HFob
warrara@reddit
But hmm. Reddit wears a disguise. 4chan tells what it is
wq1119@reddit
This is reddit lol, this website thinks that /b/ and /pol/ are the entirety of 4chan since the early 2010s.
Elman89@reddit
Twitter used by millions despite the fact that it's owned by a white supremacist who uses it a platform to boost his ideology.
Nobody's gonna bring up fucking 4chan in polite conversation but they'll happily do it with Twitter. Its existence normalizes that kind of ideology a lot more.
BuzLightbeerOfBarCmd@reddit
Is he actually a white supremacist? He seems to think most white Americans are thick and should be replaced by "elite human capital" from India. I think he's more of an Elon Musk supremacist, as well as a drugged up Mr House wannabe.
Medical-Ad1686@reddit
He's not. He just wants more money like every other billionaire.
Elman89@reddit
Yes he is, you can look up the kind of stuff he constantly tweets for more info on his ideology (the anti-twitter bot on this sub is preventing me from linking stuff). Him wanting to exploit cheap foreign labor doesn't change that.
By the way, you'll never guess who else hired Indians.
Elman89@reddit
Yes he is. Him wanting to exploit cheap foreign labor doesn't change that.
By the way, you'll never guess who else hired Indians.

lmao
Just the account requirement in place on xitter disproves these two bits
MengaMango@reddit
Twitter is a cesspool of radicalization, brainrot and using hate as an algorithm since before Musk took over, it's THAT bad.
yung_fragment@reddit
4chan is not "bad" in and of itself, it is just a largely unmoderated anonymous message board that anyone can use, and it largely functions as CONTAINMENT for unseemly individuals who, believe it or not, are alive on this planet and would like / need a place to congregate online.
Jay_Jay_Jason_74@reddit
The UK has always been a massive Nanny state, the "if you don't have anything to hide you don't have to worry" kinda state but this latest legislation is absurd even for them and like rocket fuel for reform. We live in the dumbest timeline and idk what's going on with starmer tbh?
LinuxMage@reddit
And reform don't actually care about it. Even if they manage to win in 2029, they won't do anything about it.
Jay_Jay_Jason_74@reddit
I've never said they truthfully cared aout it have I?
BuzLightbeerOfBarCmd@reddit
Labour supported and is obviously continuing to support it, but this law was actually passed by the Tories in 2023, with a two year delay. Possibly as a poison pill because they knew they'd lose the following election.
Jay_Jay_Jason_74@reddit
Oh I'm aware of that but as you said labour didn't stop or at least alter it and they Loudly support it which makes them guilty aswell
arthousepsycho@reddit
I’ve never really used 4chan, so I’m not affected, but it annoys the shit out of me that my government keeps doing shit like this. “This website isn’t confirming to our arbitrary rules that we just shit out, ban all our citizens from using it, that will show the bastards.” Again, we are being punished for the actions of corporate entities and bullshit government decisions and expected to slurp it up and call it delicious.
PsychologicalSign182@reddit
4chan is the reasonable first step for UK legislators and regulators to find and ban any website that they seem to be a "bad actor"
They're choosing 4chan first because the the massive amount of controversy around it, so few people will mourn it's loss or push back against it but it opens the door to sites like this getting banned or playing ball in the future.
MidnightNinja9@reddit
Although 5-10% of 4chan is tolerable and fine to read. Unfortunately 90% is full of some creeps, incels and weirdos. Still, I disagree with any site doing these age verifications, it's clearly not about protection of any children.
Tony Blair that continues to push this rubbish forward has met with Epstein anyway and never opposed him when he was alive. It shows how ridiculous and how stupid they think we are. It's clearly about collecting private info and selling it to some scammers/3rd parties, in excuse of a "data leak". Just what happened in Discord the other day
type_E@reddit
I remember making comments year ago, I can transplant the sentiment there to here (paraphrased): on one hand "rip bozo", on the other hand this is not a good thing, this a sign of worse things to come.
