Windows 11 has got to be the worst Operating System I've ever used in my life.

I've never ever been this disappointed in a software product as much as I am disappointed with Windows 11. I've always held onto the current WIN for as long as I could, and last month I bit the bullet and thought I'd give WIN11 a go, and I'm regeretting it ever since. It's not even, "omg this is new, I don't know how to use it" type of frustration - no, the OS is a complete mess, it's unstable, messy, unprofessional, and the entire thing felt fake and dysfunctional on so many levels. It really makes my blood boil.
- When I drag the volume all the way down in the sound mixer, it doesn't mute the app, I have to click on the app icon itself
- When I select a lot of files, and I click in that little small gap in-between each file, it deselects all of them
- When I have a lot of windows open and I would hover over them to select one, it rarely catches it from the first try. I'd click the window I want to use and it never selects it
- If I have a file path selected in a window, I click away, and I click back again on that window, I get the drop down list of paths that lead to that path and I end up clicking on a completely different path that would take me out of the window I selected
I could go on and on and on, this has got to be the worst product I've ever used. I have a couple big projects I'm finishing now, but after I'm done, I'm going back to Windows 10, and I'd stay with that until it gets hacked by Anonymous or something. My lord what a joke of a product.
PureWolfie@reddit
You never used Windows ME then.
CrowRunnerORP@reddit
LMFAO I came here to say something similar.
"Someone is young enough to have not had to deal woth the ME launch."
Or Vista. Remember Vista?
I miss windows 2000.....
ClassicGamerNL@reddit
At this point, I would even say that ME was less of a headache than Windows 11 for its time. What a horror. I do understand that fewer BSODs is always a win, but Windows 11 feels like a colossal giant that slowly drains all the power from your system. It is inefficient, constantly monitoring everything you do, pushing AI features, and adding even more strain. It also comes with so much unwanted clutter.
Part of my systems at home run on Linux, and that honestly feels like the Windows XP era. There are no endless notifications, no distractions, no hassle, and the difference in power consumption is incredible. I switched my main work PC as well, and although I cannot share the screenshots here, power usage from my private office is around 35 percent lower.
Now that I am back on Windows 11 for certain applications I still need, the main thing I notice is how often the fans spin up loudly just to keep things cool, even when I am only using Word or browsing the web. It is honestly mind blowing how inefficient Windows 11 feels.
Anyway, I just needed to get that frustration out. Haha.

Nothing will ever beat 98 SE and 2000. The two best Win OS to date, IMO.

Vista was perfectly fine. It was just unusually heavy for its time. I had a top of the line rig in 2007 and my experience was good
Agitated-Future-407@reddit
Exactly
Any-Personality3652@reddit
once service pack 2 was released it was the best os imho, sure windows xp and 7 need sp3 and sp1 respectfully
ScabrouS-DoG@reddit
Suposedly Vista was fine, simply the vendors weren't ready with their new, updated, compatible drivers. It's just a theory I heard once. By the time Windows 7 came out, the vendors were ready and that was one of the major contirubtions in the sucess of the OS.
cdhill17@reddit
Vista was fine as long as the hardware was compatible. 7 was the GOAT and 8 was trash.
mzso@reddit
8.1 was the best OS microsoft ever made...
bankkopf@reddit
That and also the mess with Windows Vista Ready/Capable, leading to many PCs being underpowered for the new Vista hardware demands.
At its core 7 is a evolution of Vista, with Vista being NT 6.0 and 7 updating the kernel to NT 6.1. It also helped that by the time of the Windows 7 release, the hardware was much more powerful and was able to run Windows 7 properly.
CrowRunnerORP@reddit
Yeah well. Yeah. Vista was solid. Just nothing worked. So....yeah. that SUCKED.
for what ever reason there was the driver issue it was the worst windows failure ive seen by far. Other than the nice looking widgets...the weather....cool clock...cpu usage...those were really cool for the time. But microwave failed with the drivers. Its not up to the vendors. Its on Microsoft to reach out to vendors and work with them.

at least Me was replaced in a year by XP but win11 is somehow still being pushed at us at full force and made even worse

I cam here to say this.
Like tell me you've never used Windows ME without telling me you never used Windows ME
bigcantonesebelly@reddit
Never needed to, I went straight from 98 to XP
BambooGentleman@reddit
You were never forced to use ME or any of the other crappy Windows versions, though. Personally, I moved to Linux after the disaster of Win98.
If only I could just use Linux in the corporate world, too. But no, I am forced to use Win11. Back when Win98 was awful not even every workplace had computers.
Jpotter145@reddit
Had Windows ME for a few years in college. It sure was exciting coming back from a smoke break \~ 3 hours in to writing a research/term paper and seeing the BSOD then realizing I forgot to save in the past hour or so and all that work is gone.
For awhile I thought it was just the shitty PC we could afford, it wasn't until after I had suffered through my senior college projects and many BSOD and redoing things (yes I'd save often, but even 30 minutes when you are on a roll is a lot to redo) that I found out all I had to do was install Windows 2000 and I'd have had a much better experience.

Yes, and 11 loses to Vista big time.
No-Actuator-6245@reddit
At least 11 performance is usable on an average system sold in the last couple of years. Vista was unusable performance wise on anything other than a top end system, it was a resource hog like never seen before or after.
Chicane90@reddit
I had a mid, more low tier notebook for school back in the day, worked fine w/o issues. Sure, it wasnt the fastest and was resource hungry, but at least it worked. Can' t say that about 11.
-Ryszard-@reddit
W win11 wrócili do dalszej destrukcji panelu sterowania.
Jpotter145@reddit
ME was by far the worst. Vista was at least much much more stable.
LukeLikesReddit@reddit
Yeah either that or dos lol, i'm showing my age here but W11 is practically a dream compared to older OS. I remember at one point actually preferring IOS over Windows. Dark times.

CoreEnema@reddit
Yeah, I've installed Windows 11 again, as I wanted to have it fresh for my master's degree. Surprise, surprise. Had an exam today, I somehow lost the WiFi connection permanently just because I've updated Python. After that, it just got stuck on the forever bootloop. So you can imagine how happy I was. Anyway, I've presented my project and downgraded to Windows 10. In my life I have never seen a system as stupid and full of bugs as Windows 11. Not even ME or Vista could compare. As a reference, the version to avoid on 11 is from 23h2 and above.
-Ryszard-@reddit
Jeśli wpiszesz w Google „how to keep only security updates windows 11 - github”, znajdziesz deweloperów, którzy stworzyli do tego narzędzia.
Hopeful-Researcher92@reddit
I mean it’s bad and really bad but it’s not ME or Vista bad OS.
Chicane90@reddit
The first OS i really had to use was Vista, and yes Vista was bad, but Vista at least worked! Win 11 drives me crazy every day at work with all the issues it has.
Background_Baker9021@reddit
Try losing cooy/paste items. Or one drive failing to sync files that have your code that you've worked hours on, so you have a new blank slate to start over with. Or lagging keyboard input, impacting shortcuts you've used for decades. Vista and ME never interrupted a workflow that badly. I've run them both. Win11 is baaaaaad that way. If all you use is a mouse you will only notice a messed up context menu here and there and everywhere.
segoii@reddit
It's made by NPCs who only know "one size fits all" and who do don't understand complex logic. Whenever they touch some complex logic, the new version of it becomes shit. In Windows 11 not even basic network share access works properly any more. It's all garbage. If those guys program AI into the system, it will end up always doing something else than the user expects it to do.

Critical-Ask-6404@reddit
Even VLC starting to lag, on a fast machine. it is absolute nightmare
d1pp1@reddit
Thats actually a problem between VLC and Windows Defender cuz it also took several seconds to open under Win10 with the most recent updates. If you make an exception for VLC in your Windows Defender or other Anti Virus programs it should be fine again, or just revert back to an earlier version of VLC. But your particular problem isnt Win11 related, this happens in 10 as well.

i completely agree that those ui glitches make everyday tasks feel like a chore. i experienced the exact same frustration with how inconsistent the file explorer and volume controls behave now. i finally decided that i could not handle it anymore so i just upgraded to 10 from logkeys. com instead. it really feels like i finally have my computer back and everything works exactly the way it should again.

I'm having problems with SSD read speeds after the latest update. It's absurd.
I use my PC to train Reinforcement Learning agents.
Honestly, Windows 11 did me a favor: I'm going to migrate to Linux.
Background_Baker9021@reddit
Good move. I used ollama on win11, but shortly after put together my server with Ubuntu 24.04 and an rtx3090. The llm on windows lasted a month or two before I jumped ship once i got a better grip on Linux.
I now run dual win11/kde neon boot on my main computer/workstation and guess what almost never gets booted to anymore?
AgeOfEmpires4AOE4@reddit
Windows!!!!
For now, Windows has stabilized, but I'm going to migrate anyway, especially because when I run image capture agents on top of a game to train my RL model, the FPS of the capture is significantly reduced. I know there's an overhead from Python, but this reduction isn't solely its fault; it's the fault of that awful Windows.

The obvious answer: Linux. If you dont have specific software or specific games with anticheat, you can't go wrong. And you will learn a lot (mostly psinfully) in the process. It's worth the pain tho. Computers aren't very different from one another, its the os abstraction that is where most of the pain lies.

I have an old laptop for the last 12 years and because the letters on the keyboard are all gone, or fade i decided to buy a new patop with Windows 11 Pro ( I buy the upgraded version since is for work) but just as everyone has stated on this post, I regret it.... I had this laptop since late November and I am done with it... for a moment I thought the laptop but now after reading this post I realized it is what I already sensed having the multiple issues with my laptop freezing, overheating and you name it... the worst of the worst.... But why has the manufacturer done nothing about it??? or at least offer fixes for it... is like they are ready to go out of business and do not care at all, and in regards to Windows 11 Pro one of the best comparing to this w11 worthy of Microsoft Hall of Shame.
Background_Baker9021@reddit
I hate to be that guy. But I will be. I installed Debian 13 with kde desktop on my ancient laptop (as referenced in my post). It works just fine for web browsing, YouTube, email, and admin for my Linux machines ( I welcomed a raspberry pi 5 a couple of months ago, so it sets ssh love too). That's where its at for old hardware. I have two family members running Linux now who are not Linux savvy, they just do basic web stuff. Only got one call for help in several months now. KDE is the best desktop I've found for everyday users who get transitioned to linux.
fusionvic@reddit
Windows 11 was 110% unnecessary especially with the hardware requirements basically cutting off anything made prior to 2021 (officially). Unofficially it seems as long as the computer has TPM 2.0, it can be forced to install Windows 11 with registry bypasses. Windows 11 just slows down the older computers and adds zero value other than continued security updates.
We were forced to go to Windows 11 at work and aside from some stupid menu changes (Renaming a file/folder was taken out of the menu and put into an icon, I just started using F2 instead as its faster now) that made things worse, there was no significant difference.
I honestly feel Windows 11 was a ploy from Microsoft and computer/parts manufacturers to push people/organizations into buying new hardware. It's hot garbage that no one asked for but was forced to get.
-Ryszard-@reddit
Chodziło o kasę, 10 nie przynosiła już zysków. Dodatkowo 11 integruje mechanizmy śledzenia i wyświetlania reklam jeszcze bardziej niż było to w 10. I realizują ten cel poprzez TPM2, w którym MS trzyma unkatowe dla maszyny informacje.
fusionvic@reddit
Interesting, I never knew that about TPM 2.0 as I always thought it was about security.
I was able to install Windows 11 on every computer at home, even the ones from 12 years ago without any TPM. I mainly did it for the continued security updates although I am not sure if they are even necessary. I realized a lot of my computers were actually bought around the time Windows 10 came out as I saw stickers that either said Windows 10 ready or Windows 10. Hah.
IcyEnvironment5144@reddit
The last PC I bought, and an update during the first week literally broke the operating system. I couldn’t open folders on the desktop or do anything at all.
It forced me to downgrade to Windows 10, which is much better for PCVR gaming where maximum performance and stability are required.
The list of problems with Windows 11 is endless, and Microsoft’s policies completely clash with user freedom.
-Ryszard-@reddit
Obecna 10 bije na głowę 11 w każdym aspekcie. Stabilny, dobry, dopracowany (no może z wyjątkami). Nie jest bez wad, ale widać nie ma róży bez kolców. Zapisałem się do ESU i jeżeli będzie za rok możliwość zakupu kolejnego ESU to tak zrobię. Byle cena była jak teraz.
Background_Baker9021@reddit
I switched to linux after using windows since version 3.0, and DOS before that. Windows 11 pissed me off with the "throw out your hardware, it's too old", when it was still perfectly serviceable.
All of my machines run different flavors of linux, Kubuntu, Debian 13 KDE, Ubuntu server, and KDE Neon.
Two machines are still windows 11 only (gaming PCs for wife and daughter), and my own personal machine dual boots win 11 and KDE Neon, just in case I happen to need something windows does that KDE Neon doesn't.
I can no longer handle working with Windows 11. It took me about 3 months to climb the linux learning cliff, but it was worth every penny. Windows 11 does so much stupid shit with the UI that I find it frustrating to infuriating on a regular basis with all the weird selecting shenanigans, typing disappearing, and other weirdness.
It even managed to lose a git commit for a project that wiped out my project, which I had to start over again from scratch! WTH?
I don't consider Windows to be a "professional working environment" anymore, after 3+ decades of computing.

-Ryszard-@reddit

Awesome that it's working for you.
For me, here's a short list off the top of my head:
- File Explorer doesn't allow persistently rearranging of columns + disabling grouping.
- Network discovery is absolute mess.
- SMB issues (can't connect, won't allow Guest access even though workaround applied via gpedit, etc).
- Remote desktop not working for unknown reason (firewalls are off).
- etc.
Plus several annoyances, such as replacing the Windows + K shortcut with "Cast to" option that I never use.
I haven't had such issues since Vista, but with Vista it was mostly driver issues.
-Ryszard-@reddit
Problemy z SMB wynikają z wprowadzenia dodatkowych zabezpieczeń, jak dla mnie głupich. Zmiany w gpedit i rejestrze rozwiązują ten problem.

I eventually upgraded to Windows 11 last year (a couple of weeks before support for 10 ceased)
Then a patch in November screwed things up. After about 5-10 minutes it would load any internet based applications or load a Web page.
I managed to find a fix for it but the following patch broke it again. I applied a different fix and it seemed to work for a few months but the latest patch broke it again but additionally it now freezes during shutdown that I have to do a forced power off (holding laptop power button) but it will then freeze during start up requiring Windows repair.

lunadiparmigiano@reddit
Is this a joke answer or are you serious? Because if you need to fix the bloat to make an OS good, then it is not a good OS. It should be good out of the box, tweaks should be necessary only to adapt to specific needs, but here we are talking about basic functionalities being terrible.
Dangerous_Function16@reddit

Rewda2@reddit
In the amount of time it takes on average to install a debloated ISO, or debloat your windows manually I can install any linux distro on a dozen PCs and have it run perfectly out of the box. Software engineering also on Windows is a pain in the ass. the Windows permission system is a clusterfuck that even after a decade of being a software engineer I just gave up on, pushing AI into every part of your PC is retarded, forcing you to update before you shutdown is just nasty and shady, there is a bunch of shit I can say about Windows that has weight to it.
An OS should and NEEDS to function A-OK out of the box, not lag behind because some retard at Microsoft forgot to turn off the over-aggressive OneDrive syncing process. I've had nothing but issues with Windows since I switched from 10 to 11.
On the contrary 10 is far more stable, faster and I'd argue more secure then 11, what's it worth using a new OS if within a year it'll just be a giant ass backdoor for hackers/bad actors to use cause I can guarantee you, shoving AI into everything will lead towards more fail points, and potentially towards way more exploits.
Mr_Young_Life@reddit
Couldn't agree more, and now I'm stuck in a shit loop every fucking time windows needs to install an update because something didn't go as planned, and then my PC goes through a on off on off on off on off on off cycle for 30 minutes to revert whatever shit it was installing, and it does this when I turn the computer off hoping to go to bed only to stay up and watch this bullshit unfold. Btw this bullshit only started AFTER "upgrading" to windows 11. The troubleshooter says to reinstall windows 11 because something went wrong, how the fuck is that my fault??
Blueciffer1@reddit
"yea so if you just do all these changes to the OS, then you can finally have a usable OS" lmao
No_Leopard_9321@reddit
Yeah? Isn’t it simple? If you go in a modify the registry manually, install several third party apps to remove otherwise locked bloatware, use a hobbyist GitHub repo to restore functionality that’s existed for 3 decades and then upgrade to 64 gigs of ram windows is actually worth a shot.

Not going to answer in order, but:
- I don't see much of a difference between Win11 and Win10.
- I use Start11 (less than 5$ when you watch for specials) and ExplorerPatcher. My taskbar is on top of the screen, where I want it. My Windows, my choice, dammit.
- I have used FreeCommander for years now, instead of Windows Explorer. Double Commander can be good too. Twice the windows, twice the fun. Both are free, but donations is recommended, or required for premium features.
- The rest, again, I have not seen any difference between this and Win10. Windows 11 is a little faster in games than Win10 now, or at least equal, if you disable memory integrity and virtual machine platform, which are detrimental to gamers.
- The Church of Linux is still amenable to all*, arms wide open.
*Except for some wifi users. Use at your own risks. No warranty provided. Newbies not always tolerated. Do not ask basic tech support questions. Do not try to find someone in your area who can provide personal computer support. Do not ever mention to anyone you are a Linux user, you may end up on the registry of Anti-American antifa activities, blocked at the US border and/or deported to El Salvador.

A quick comment on wifi... you are correct that some drivers are flakey and some non-existent. Chipsets are an important consideration when dealing with linux and supported or community provided drivers. My wifi got flakey on my 13+ year old laptop that is now running Debian Trixie with KDE. I suspect the card got loose after I had replaced the hdd with an ssd.
Anyway, the laptop supports USB 3 ("Super Speed" in the branding). I did some research and ordered this, since I hate/am too lazy to take it apart again to try to figure out if the wifi card is loose.
Netgear Nighthawk usb 3.0 a8000.
Some people hate netgear, some love it. I just wanted something that would work and not snap off if it was plugged into a USB port and I rolled around on the couch or something.
I can testify that this works out of the box on Debian Trixie (13) without any issues, and the chipset drivers are supported in kernel, so it was no muss no fuss.
I suggest this for those who are nervous or find themselves needing a replacement Wifi for an old laptop or something more stable that just works. It ain't cheap, but it sure does the job well. 700mbps up/down vs. the 30mbps I was getting on the old wifi b/g/n card it came with. Hope this helps someone.

Man, I couldn't agree more. I had to spend a couple hundred bucks changing stuff in my middle aged computer to even install it and I had to pay a computer expert to do it because it was impossible for me. Now I can't get my perfectly good older HP 1020 laserjet to work with it. I had to install this miserable bastard because Intuit Turbotax chose to force us to have it to use this year's tax program. F them both.

Windows 11 is the worst! I pretty much hate everything about it!

Can't believe they stopped on Bad OS, ME -> Vista -> 8 > 11
AggressiveResist8615@reddit
It is genuinely so bad, the amount of issues on this OS surpass even vista.

Every time i try to get work done it turns into a shitshow. Maybe its my fault for trying to complete tasks on a surface go 2 but sheesh can this thing be a piece of shit. Touch screen issues. Bluetooth/keyboard connectivity issues. Drivers not working properly. Issues with microsoft store and notenote. I would be flattered if i could turn it on and finish off a task before i have to go balls deep in copilot and reddit bitching and trouleshooting. It feels like a personal attack at this point.

I mean, you're all ignoring MacOS. Win11 is bad, but that takes the cake
JF_WPA@reddit
Fuck yeah! Started with 3.1 and have used every one of the home versions MS has offered and I HATE W11 so far. Have it as a dual boot on my laptop with W10 and it is complete shit and absolutely psychotic. Super buggy, never know what the hell it is going to do / delete / fuck up, have had install it three times in the last month (finally installed it so I can use Turbo Tax), and it will not make reliable back-ups... And updates are a complete shit-show too.
Ran it raw and it was shit, ran it with Open-Shell, Winaero and other programs that are 1000% rock solid with W10, and W11 just has to fuck things up - Christ, it won't even keep basic mouse settings in check. So sick of playing "what the fuck / how the fuck is this POS W11 going to act after boot, logoffs, etc".
Glad I am not the only one and not hearing "It must be you bro".

Od roku jadę na Windowsie 11, tylu samoistnych restartów, błędów, problemów z instalacją sterowników, wysypywanie się sterowników... to rekord z wszystkich poprzedników razem wziętych. Kraje powinny do sądu podać Microsoft, bo to uderza w interes publiczny, ten system to killer PC.
Mooncalf_69@reddit
It is one of the worst i've used
With Win 10 I had like 0 issues myself
With Win 11 i can recall having these issues many times:
Recovery mode not detecting Keyboard and randomly entering it when there are no issues
Mouse unresponsive on windows
Update 24H2 who made many computers not even boot, mine got freezes tho and also having lag like swapping tabs or programs and having micro freezes or lag with even a fast pc worth 3000€
Programming bugs like clicking on Turn off PC on windows and suddenly seeing that it restarted rather than turning off..., Visual Bugs, like a lot... Performance bugs like using netflix on full screen and having my PC go black and have to force shutdown,
Bug where the ALT key is pressed "forever" until you restart your PC for no reason.
And probably many more that I have yet to encounter or not encountered at all but others may have
ScrubscJourney@reddit
That sounds like a you problem lol. Never had any of those issues in Windows 11 for years.

Are these comments full of Microsoft shills or something? I use W10 at home (LTSC) and it's a breeze, but at work I use W11 and it's a total mess. Buggy animations, clashing UI designs (HATE the new right click that shows in the start menu and half the time it doesn't even display the text), advertisements, "agentic AI" being shoved everywhere with no thought or care, worse performance, higher memory usage, clipboard issues, trying to force you to connect to an account everywhere, it goes on and on.
Commenters suggesting a laundry list of registry fixes and setting modifications are missing the point entirely. Microsoft has become more openly user hostile and thoughtless with their design than ever, we shouldn't have to do all this to get a functional/stable OS.
Take a look at the design docs for W95 sometime and notice all the care they put into contrast, windows and corners, readable icons, and consistency across the OS. Modern MS does nothing like this, they just slap together "sleek and modern" WinUI designs onto legacy ones leading to a confusing maze of menus and submenus that all clash and have zero cohesion.
No it's not the worst OS ever but it's a massive step down in quality and we as consumers shouldn't run defense for the massive oligarchical multi-billion dollar corporation when it's clear they don't give a fuck about us or even their OS anymore (Azure's where the $$$ is nowadays).
I stayed on W7 as long as I could (~2020) and plan to do the same for W10, but once that's over I'm jumping ship to Debian or Mint instead and never looking back. Fuck this company and the direction they are steering toward.

I keep running into a problem whenever it tries to update that something didn't go as planned no need to worry -undoing changes, everything fucking time it has to update, funny how this problem only started AFTER "upgrading" to windows 11. It's complete and utter shit

Shit won't stop draining my battery when shut down *unless* I unplug before I shut down. There's no way to change this. Cloud this and that piss off I have backup harddrives for that. Can't even search for the command prompt in a logical way, all it does is open browser tabs on some "bing" site.
System settings is behind the dumbest wall of backtracking from "personalize" with the stupidest menus known to man. Yeah "hurr durr do u want to change a theme" no I want to adjust power configurations

Microsoft needs to figure it out because they can’t expect all of corporate America to operate on such a terrible system and practically force everyone on their shitty “new great tools”. 365 and windows 11 are TRASH

This literally sounds like a you problem LOL. I haven't had any of these issues in the windows 11.

I updated it to windows 11, went striaght back to windows 10 the saem day. It is less costumizable and burries a lot of advanced features. Certain apps simply wouldn't start and my Microsoft 365 apps stopeed syncing and logged me out of them every single time. I am staying with windows 10 as long as I can and once it isn't possible anymore I am just changing to a new OS.

Everything you said is 100%. One thing really annoying me, is folders etc constantly grouping, even when we don't want them to. It's irritating having to undo it every single time you go between windows. It stops eventually and keeps things alphabetical, but it doesn't last long and goes back to grouping. I looked it up a thousand times online, people saying to do this or that, but none of them work.

Most of my experience has been "wow windows 10 with the task bar centered". Haven't had any issues with it since it released.

I like it better than Windows 2.x, Vista, and Windows 8 myself. To each her own.

You probably weren't even born then, that would explain it.
I was a Win11 early adopter for home use and work use. I have not had any issues with either.
