Dr Demento has retired. What song did he introduce to you that helped shaped your musical taste?

I first heard Frank Zappa in 1986 (age 12) when his song Call Any Vegetable was played. The next day I bought my first Zappa cassette

I forget the artist, but the cut-up news reports using snippets of pop & rock songs.
I remember one talking about an alien invasion, and the reporter asking what someone did when they saw the alien, to which was the reply, Little Richard singing “ducked back in the alley”.

I honestly don't remember when I started listening. 1982? 1983 maybe? Just about the time Weird Al popped into the picture. My parents also thought that the instrument of choice should be the accordion and so, at age 7, I was given lessons. I only lasted about two years before I quit since my older brother quit - I wasn't doing that alone. Just a few short years later, I find this guy using an accordion to make funny songs. I was floored that somebody was making actual money with this thing. His talent was off the charts, so I followed his career. I listened to Dr D religiously taping just about anything. My love of comedy, parody and music grew. I still have some of those cassettes. I attended Al's last show here in Clearwater last month. I feel like I've been listening to this stuff my whole life....and since I'm in my mid-50s, I pretty much have. I'm so grateful for this stuff - it's gotten me through some really REALLY crappy days. The Good Doctor will be greatly missed.

When I was in Prague I found this “Now 80s” TV channel and Star Trekkin was showing on it asking with a TON of other great stuff.
OrneTTeSax@reddit
Star Trekkin’ was on the first burned CD I ever had, probably around ‘97 or ‘98. Rich kid at school had satellite internet and a CD burner. He’d download songs, pre-Napster, and sell burned CDs at school. $5 for a random mix, $1 a song if you wanted to pick out the songs. When a new CD was $17 and only had a song or two we wanted, $1 a song was a good deal.

Oddly enough in the 80's my local "Oldies" Station would play They're Coming to Take Me Away (Ha Ha) in fairly regular rotation
