Getting off an exit then getting right back on
Posted by nosebeerhappyhour@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 70 comments
I drive interstate 78 multiple times a day between mm 12 and 29 and I regularly see trucks get off exit ramps then go straight and get right back on the interstate going the same direction. Why?
J9Dougherty@reddit
We call this "shuffling the deck." So you're driving down the road with a bunch of assholes. You decide you dont want to be around those assholes. You hit the exit, get back on, now you're on the same highway, but you're not surrounded in the same assholes. You've got a new set of assholes. Rinse and repeat until you've got a crowd of assholes that's at least not doing really dumb stuff.
Firm-Tangerine-2114@reddit
😂😂 I love this
aeroxan@reddit
I knew it, I'm surrounded by assholes.
Sea-Count-5298@reddit
Around really dumb assholes vs just dumb assholes 😂 Lol my life on Los Angeles freeways.
J9Dougherty@reddit
I despise LA freeways but Ive only vacationed there. I was saying its gotta be a lot better by truck and for someone who knows where they're going. Of course most exits will probably just spit you 90° into a neighborhood, that's the knowing where you're going part.
clarobert@reddit
This! I do it regularly and for this exact reason. It's a lot safer than briefly pulling onto the shoulder where you risk being struck by an inattentive driver and then creating another "pack" while reaccelerating to pull back into the traffic flow..
MostlyUseful@reddit
I do that to get away from another vehicle that is playing games with my truck or to get away from a pack of vehicles that are in (what I call) group therapy mode…one by one they come flying up on me, then gather around me, reduce their speed, and stay there.
MiguelSTG@reddit
To get out of a pocket of traffic. Some trucks are governed, and the trucks in front of them are all going about the same speed. So they might do an up and over to let traffic get down the road a bit.
skeletons_asshole@reddit
Flatbed here, I’ll often also hit an exit to look for somewhere to do a quick load check. Don’t find a good spot, hop back on.
Jondiesel78@reddit
If you see trucks doing this often around you, perhaps you need to consider that you're the problem
currentlycucumber@reddit
Great defensive driving skill. Stay away from the pack.
nosebeerhappyhour@reddit (OP)
Never thought of this one
Confident-Ear-9388@reddit
Maybe they needed to take their eyes off the road for 5 seconds for something on their phone. I've pulled over before with the intention of going on the onramp shoulder, but the red light was long enough for me to take care of what I needed
PShubbs91@reddit
I've had my GPS tell me to do that and didn't realize until I was already on the exit ramp.
mrscrillo@reddit
For most ELDs, you must stop in order to change duty status. Pull off, stop for five seconds to go on personal conveyance, get back on. Do it again 30 minutes later to end PC. DOT rest break complete
hoarder59@reddit
And completely illegal.
BedAdministrative619@reddit
It depends...
hoarder59@reddit
When would it be legal. It flouts the letter and intent of the law.
BedAdministrative619@reddit
It depends on whether or not you get caught, lol.
mrscrillo@reddit
Well yeah
No_Inflation7432@reddit
Looking for a place to check the water pressure, then deciding that particular exit and entrance ramp don't have the appropriate place to check said water pressure (no place to park for 2 min), and moving on.
Allemaengel@reddit
I hate I-78 in PA with a passion.
Rare_Indication_3811@reddit
Driving oversize sometimes have to go thru ramps if lines are narrow or lack shoulder
rilloroc@reddit
In certain places, I'll do that to make it look like I'm going to the scale that's just off the other side of the highway.
poutinelover6@reddit
I do it to get a fresh pack of cars/trucks. Sometimes you just need to be part of a new group like others have mentioned.
StickDroid2178@reddit
I’ve done this because my cruise control won’t work and I can only go 65 on the pedal instead of 68. I have to get up to 65 and then slow down to below 10 for it to fix itself. Have to do it once a month or so. Not bad enough for me to complain to the shop about it.
DrRab121@reddit
I had to pee that’s why
obsolete_broccoli@reddit
I’ve done that a few times because the GPS said to, and I thought it knew something I didn’t. I know where I should ignore it now though lol
firstblush73@reddit
This happened to me on 80W today in Illinois. I dont get out enough this way, and my ADHD brain always forgets until it says to get right back on 80 ... sonnovabitch!
Mitch13@reddit
12 and 29 in NJ or PA?
Connor4543@reddit
Had no idea people exit to get a new group of drivers around them. I’m governed at 65 so everyone just passes me 😭🥀
AdventurousLawyer646@reddit
It's better to pull over on an the on ramp than the side of the highway. It's safer. No stupid people to crash into you at highway speed driving a 18 wheeler...or a prius for that matter. I got hit by a drunk lady at night on Cinco de Mayo while I was sleep parked on the exit ramp to a rest area at 3am. On ramps are safer.
Lentezdelvalley@reddit
Checking the hoses
HardHardly@reddit
That's what their copilot/pc told 'em to do.
WolvTheHero@reddit
I do this all the time. Mostly when some idiot hauling an Amazon trailers pass me and pull 50 feet in front of me and slow down, then they can’t maintain their speed and constantly speeds up when I try to pass but slows back down when I fall back behind them.
GoldCovers@reddit
Taking a piss on the ramp
nosebeerhappyhour@reddit (OP)
They aren't stopped long enough to piss. They literally come to the stop sign then immediately cross and get right back on.
Always_Shifting_4459@reddit
🤣 or maybe quickly emptying their piss jug at the stop sign
MajorHymen@reddit
They might have been looking for a shoulder to park and piss or use the phone but saw the shoulder wasn’t big enough or saw a bunch of no parking signs etc.
Little-Trucker@reddit
Shoulder wasn't wide enough to park?
TheMazeDaze@reddit
Faulty navigation software? Been there. Switched to something different
MrFahrenheit99@reddit
My Garmin does this incessantly. I’ve learned most of the places it tries to do this and I just ignore it
shadowmib@reddit
I've done it to check messages on my tablet. I'll get a notification but I can't look at it while the vehicle's in motion. All it will display is the navigation app. I have to pull off somewhere and come to a complete stop before it will let me pull up the messages app to see what's going on. Sometimes they've they've added an extra stop or took one away or something like that. But I'll have no idea of knowing until I pull off and look at it. Once the vehicle stops it just takes a matter of seconds to pull up the app and glance at it and then drive away
Current_Put_2950@reddit
Wanted to take a piss, but wasn't anywhere decent to stop and do it
peffer32@reddit
I used to do this to get away from trucks or four wheelers that were driving like asshats.
Gweedo1967@reddit
Then they’re throwing their piss bottle out.
BedAdministrative619@reddit
I do this if I need a second to do something. Drop something on the floor, change music/book, alter gps, blow my nose, text, etc.
Microshlongg@reddit
I do this with rest areas. Had an owner op he sped up when I’m passing in but slowed down once I get behind him. I took a stroll thru a rest area and never saw him again
Woodyc47@reddit
If there’s a back up they’re doing it to get around more vehicles.
nosebeerhappyhour@reddit (OP)
Never backups. Nothing is ever out of the ordinary
Woodyc47@reddit
That is odd. My gps wants me to do that sometimes, but I don’t. Maybe it’s just them following their gps blindly.
VikingLander7@reddit
Exactly this! GPS: “hey there I see you are traveling at highway speed but I need you to take this exit and slow down to off ramp speed and then speed back up to highway speed because it’s 50 feet shorter distance than staying on the highway.”
Exact-Leadership-521@reddit
I seen a spot once with a path into the trees and back on the road 200 yard detour that added 6 hours.
ursisterstoy@reddit
When I’ve done it I saw that a gas station had diesel and I was considering stopping but when I take the exit and see the gas station closer there’s no shot in parking there and I get right back on the interstate and look for the next one.
seneeb@reddit
There's multiple sections in that area where some gps units will route through the exit because it's just enough of a distance difference to be "shorter"
Violet_Apathy@reddit
My windshield wiper fluid doesn't work worth a damn while the truck is moving so I'll do that to clean my windshield
Virel_360@reddit
Sometimes you need to pull over for 10 seconds to send a message to your company or take a piss.
JOliverScott@reddit
They're blindly following GPS and it's faulty.
ThatDubDude@reddit
That's usually my reason
TruckerChet1973@reddit
If flat bed it could be a cheat for load check.
flowermaneurope@reddit
I’m a step-deck puller and I often will pull off to check my load securement. Sometimes those straps or chains need a little extra or my tarp needs a few more bungees. Sometimes I just gotta take a piss or maybe even a shit.
Abucfan21@reddit
I do it all the time on the 91/60 in SoCal. I've been on this dedicated route for so long, I know which off ramps will save me a few minutes in traffic.
( But if any of you other fuckers start doing it, I will find you and take the toilet paper out of the stall you were going to use at Pilot!)
StonedTrucker@reddit
Wrong exit?
CampIndividual783@reddit
Often drivers take an off-ramp and hop right back on to avoid a pocket of traffic or because the ramp houses a scale or toll lane. Most fleet tractors are governed at 65 or so, and if they get bunched up behind a slower rig they'll jump off and use the on-ramp to let faster cars by without losing momentum. On some stretches PrePass directs you to exit for an inspection scale, then merge right back onto the interstate when cleared. They’re not just joyriding — they’re keeping traffic flowing and staying in compliance.
Lopsided_Beautiful_1@reddit
Where is exactly this area located? Is there an exit only line that maybe they couldn’t get over and had to drive straight to get back on the interstate.
No_Teaching_8273@reddit
Height issue ?
Desperate_Tourist554@reddit
Good way to get rid of road ragers
Alarming_Star_6549@reddit
Bridge heights is one reason or looking for a place to chill for a 30
geneticdeadender@reddit
Lots of reasons.
He may want to sleep but the ramp isn't wide enough, to uneven or it is posted no parking.
He may be behind vehicles that he can't pass but which keep slowing down. So he pulls over so they go away.
He may have taken the wrong exit.
He may want to get something to eat so he pulls off only to find there is no truck parking.
Beneficialsensai@reddit
I do this for the same reason, some drivers are so annoying
