Damn must be a hot minute since I've seen Fight Club apparently! lol I've only seen Lord of War once, but it was good. Don't remember him in it ether lol
If opening weekend numbers were indicative of a movie’s quality then princess bride and countless others would’ve been forgotten and deemed terrible movies.
Are those numbers including marketing and other costs outside of the direct budget for the film? I’m no film budgetologist, but a film making more than its direct budget does not mean it was a success
Advertising budget is rarely more than the film budget. Tron and Legacy definitely made their money back and profit. Ares probably won't make back its budget which is too bad since it's better than Legacy. I can see it being a cult classic one day.
Haven't seen the new one but in general, I love the Tron franchise. And not that I necessarily buy into the hate against Jared Leto but I feel like they shot themselves in the foot casting him as the lead in this one because SURELY they must be aware that there is a widespread hatred towards him.
I was commenting in another subreddit about how this franchise seems cursed. Every entry is visually arresting and has a great soundtrack. Nothing about it screams Bayhem or other assorted forms of braying douchebag jackassery. I have a Disney+ account and should in theory at very least want to get high and soak it all in, but I just can't muster the interest. What gives?
I'm a bit older ('75), so I saw the original Tron opening weekend at six or seven, the perfect age for it to become engrained in my consciousness. On rewatch as an adult, I could freely admit that it didn't live up to the nostalgia, but I still love it to this day.
I was once again in the target demographic for Tron Legacy, if at the tail end of the "critical 18-35" rather than the very beginning of it with the first one. It has the Bridges nostalgia-bait, the tits and glitz angle with Olivia 'Thirteen' Wilde and a game-as-he-could-be-with-his-limited-range Hedlund as the "new blood"... but with a less polished star and even worse script, it was doomed to fail in a way the first one never was. There's no chance that Legacy was ever going to become the cult classic the original did.
Now, at the half-century mark in *current year, I am well past the nostalgia I have for the original affecting my desire to ever see another Tron* film, regardless, but the fucking moronic premise of this one really takes the cake.
"People liked The Matrix, right? What if we remade the third film that people didn't really care about, using a franchise that's never performed well?"
I just watched the first two and here's what I think it is - Tron was always visually stunning, musically mind-blowing, but the characters always felt - hollow.
I could not be made to care about any of them. You don't feel anything for them. When I'm watching something like the Matrix, at least the first one, I cared about Neo. I wanted to see things work out. When something happens to a major character - you feel something.
I haven't seen Tron: Ares yet, but if anyone is expecting something more from it than the first two, that might not be a great mindset to go in with. I think Tron has always been really cool AND really flawed.
The most recent one, is the worst yet. Yes that's what it needed. a baby in the mix. lets stop all the cool superhero shit so we can take care of a baby. I want to escape real life, not be reminded about it.
The people at Fox (yes, it's also owned by Disney, but it's still a weird combination of legal fuckery and dick-measuring) are well aware they can't make a good Fantastic Four movie.
They still have to exercise those rights on occasion to retain them, because the only thing better than making a good adaptation with your about-to-expire rights... is making sure no one else can.
The first movie was super cool. Like, it had a huge cool factor for kids. We were all throwing frisbees at each other, our bikes were light-cycles, the arcade games was both fun and looked futuristic and amazing, computers were still this cool new thing, the soundtrack was amazing, there were just so many things that made this movie super cool in the 80s.
Computers aren't new and exciting anymore, all they do in 2025 is make us feel hopeless and stressed out. Even video games feel like a ripoff, just a reminder that we're all just a resource for corporations to extract value from. Who wants to watch a movie about that?

How the fuck does Jared Leto keep getting work?
VinylHighway@reddit
I like his movies
LastCallKillIt@reddit
He was solid in 2049 I thought. Of course I don't let myself get caught up in celebrity drama either.

Also Fight Club, Lord of War, American Psycho...

Tron Legacy made $409M on a $170M budget
2/3rds of this panel is basically wrong

Plus,
Tron was fun and awesome! Tron Legacy was fun and awesome! Tron Ares was fun and awesome!
People, if you like tech-fueled action movies with a splash of retro, go have fun at this movie!
DifficultMinute@reddit
And then proceeded to probably make 10x that by licensing it to television networks. That movie was on practically every weekend through the 90s.

Actually all 3 panels are wrong because my age is off by a year.

I have no real feel for the first one since I only know of it as good enough to squeeze a sequel out of. But I did see the sequel and enjoyed it.
nocapnonerf@reddit
I enjoyed the sequel as well, still very modern and holds up very well today. I have no inclination of seeing the 3rd one, however.
ThisElder_Millennial@reddit
Gonna wait for it to stream on Disney+. Which will probably be by Xmas.
TheEndOfEverything0@reddit
Yeah. Aside from requiem for a dream I just can't take a director seriously if they thought Jared Leto was there right guy for the job.
