I wonder if this will stop the bullshit “dealer adjustment/market adjustment” fees? Or maybe they’ll just shift the costs on the price tag so it says something like “New tire spray - $50,000”…
chucchinchilla@reddit
No, nothing illegal about that manufacturers can suggest the price but dealers ultimately choose the price be it more or less than MSRP.
Law is referring to nitrogen in tires, warranty plans for things already covered under manufacturer warranty. I believe this also prevents them from misrepresenting this BS as mandatory..they have to tell you it’s optional.
ppooooooooopp@reddit
Right? I mean I'm sure they will figure out another way to rip people, but if it stopped ADM that would still be a huge win for consumers
Dealers provide literally no value now, I understand when people were buying lemons, maybe they helped protect consumers, at this point they are anti consumer sleaze bags who exist because they have a monopoly on the consumer market.
perennialpurist@reddit
I mean dealerships only exist these days because they spend a lot of money (as an industry) lobbying to make sure that the laws that keep them in business stay in place. Every other industry exist because consumers demand them - but in the auto industry, dealerships only exist because they have lobbied to create laws that require dealerships, literally no other reason. This will be very IYKYK, but - car dealerships are equivalent to PBMs in pharma. Get rid of dealerships and PBMs and consumers of autos and healthcare both will be better off. QED, bitches.

Good. Fuck fuck fuck fuck dealerships. So goddamned done with the worthless middlemen glad something is being done to put them in check. They 100% did this to themselves.
Sun_Aria@reddit
Meanwhile, the dealership lobby in Texas: This will cause people to lose jobs and won’t provide benefits to consumers!!1!
rhunter99@reddit
I’m not a Tesla fan but respect to them for going against the industry and selling direct to consumers
Mother____Clucker@reddit
I think add-ons that provide "no tangible benefit" to customers is going to be a very hard case to prove. A case can be made for almost every add (even if it is worthless), unless they are classifying market adjustment as a form of that.
Rabo_McDongleberry@reddit
There are way too many dealers in CA on CarGurus advertising a certain price. And then when you read the fine print it says "price does not include mandatory pre-installed" bullshit like $800 "etched catalytic converter" $1,400 "paint protection" etc. None of that shit is a benefit to the car and if it's "mandatory" it should already be included in the price. You can't show $4k less as the market price just to then say "btw that's not the real price because you HAVE to pay for these extras no one asked for". So fuck all these dealerships.
LaVernWinston@reddit
Absolutely a good move. Had to damn near intercept my Maverick right off the flatbed to ensure the dealer couldn’t claim that they added all the pointless shit.
Bicycle_Dude_555@reddit
Basically brings protections that educated buyers have always performed for themselves to uneducated buyers who were previously taken advantage of. Sounds good to me!
elswede@reddit
Wouldn't it make more sense to allow direct sales from the manufacturer, or has California already allowed that
verdegrrl@reddit
Some variation of this rule has been in effect for some years already. It's not clear from the article whether the consumer needs to purchase this option in advance, as it has in the past.
Upper-Career9712@reddit
How is this enforced? I’m assuming it’s only for dealership purchase
verdegrrl@reddit
Yes, dealership only.
Up until this point is was something you could request for used cars under a certain value (similar as described above).
See details of current/past rule: https://www.drivinggeeks.com/california-car-return-laws/
Yotsubato@reddit
It’s dealership only.
Private party remains as is sales
