Tower Records.
cocococlash@reddit
They have one in Tokyo!
Nadathug@reddit
Yeah I think there’s at least 3 locations in Japan? They talk about it in the Tower Records documentary
Black_Aquarian82@reddit
Nothing will make my life complete than one more visit to Tower
cocococlash@reddit
Looks like your life will be complete soon
thinkfloyd_@reddit
There's still one in Dublin Ireland, and another in Shibuya Tokyo.
Nadathug@reddit
They still have them in Japan!
nerdylegofam@reddit
I miss Tower! Such a big part of my youth. We'd hang out in there after school all the time, browsing the "cassingles" and wishing we could buy ticket shows.
Nadathug@reddit
They had all the hard to find stuff that the more mainstream stores didn’t have. I’d hang out in the magazine section all day just reading everything. It was like the IRL internet.
First_Monitor_4028@reddit
Blockbuster. I can still smell it.
FeatherDust11@reddit
lol when I read this I too instantly remembered, it’s kind of a clean plasticy smell with a hint of popcorn?
raulmonteblanco@reddit
Mine smelled like Servpro carpet cleaner and popcorn.
bookofgray@reddit
I was just at the Last Blockbuster recently and while it is a lot of nostalgia (but you can still rent movies), they had a branded popcorn candle that I bought immediately. I think you can order online, it’s like I don’t even want to burn the damn thing. I should have bought two.
aroundincircles@reddit
I would love to rent movies again. I’m done with streaming services.
glazedfaith@reddit
Indefinite rental is what you're doing with streaming services anyway.
aroundincircles@reddit
Yes, but the stuff I wanna watch is spread across 8 different platforms, and there is so much shit I don’t want to watch to sort through, and I end up watching stuff I don’t enjoy just because. I try to have my screen time be deliberate and not just brain suck. It’s easy to brain rot with streaming.
akm1111@reddit
Get something like letterboxd & find what you want to watch before you open the streaming service. Then just search for the thing you want. No scrolling thru lots of categories, go straight to the movie.
aroundincircles@reddit
But I also don’t want to pay for the streaming services. I watch very little TV. Maybe a couple of hours on a weekend if I watch a movie. Some weeks I watch 0 tv.
glazedfaith@reddit
How is this different from sifting through physical media to rent except it's vastly more convenient.
I don't think anyone would argue that the state of streaming is anything but a mess, but suggesting that driving to a store, selecting something, and paying what with inflation would now be $10+ to rent it whether you end up watching it or not, is somehow more convenient is disingenuous at best.
aroundincircles@reddit
I didn't say better. It's just what I want. right now i have to be a subscriber to even see what they are streaming, (which I don't do). and I pay regardless if I watch or not. plus it typically is not that out of the way, or least it wasn't when they still existed to hit the block buster in the same parking lot as the grocery store you go to.
QueerTree@reddit
I’m going back to DVDs. I’d rather watch LotR a billion times than try to find something worth watching on 8 different streaming platforms.
shohei_heights@reddit
Make sure you’re getting Blu-ray actually. 480p is rough to watch these days.
geekgirlwww@reddit
My primary partner just got a CRT tv. He’s so excited to watch old wrestling on it
DasKittySmoosh@reddit
I’m trying to get my spouse on board with this one, but he’s a millennial and dragging his feet
bunchofclowns@reddit
I don't understand this mindset. We live in a golden age of television. There is soooo much to watch.
If you don't want to have to subscribe to all the different platforms then you should go sail the high seas matey 🏴☠️
geekgirlwww@reddit
A new partner just invited me to share in his trove and I was able to cancel my Hulu/Disney/Max bundle
DasKittySmoosh@reddit
Instant gratification isn’t everything, and some day I’ll be grateful for having physical items instead of digital
Just like having certain physical books is important, but I also enjoy reading on the digital format.
One is good, but the other is irreplaceable
bunchofclowns@reddit
I get where you're coming from. I don't feel that way about movies and television but I am all about preserving music on physical format. Yeah I have Spotify but they don't have everything. Not even close. So I have a large collection of vinyl and CD.
ibanezer83@reddit
I hate to be that guy, and I'm glad that you collect physical media...
But PLEASE Everyone, quit Spotify! Their new contractual agreement is absolutely more disgusting than imaginable and shouldn't even be legal.
Anyone who uploads their music now gives Spotify complete control to use , sell, modify in ANY shape or form as they please and essentially PROMISE in the contract to NEVER pay the Artist in any way.
I implore everyone to find other ways to consume and stream music. Hell, PIRACY is a better option at this point! This is coming from a producer musician.
Thank you for your time.
Not_So_Bad_Andy@reddit
I bought a 4K blu-ray player last year. Streaming is good but there are times I want to watch something physical. Especially when things have been edited or removed from streaming.
BetterEveryDayYT@reddit
I built a few shelves and have slowly created our movie library - DVDs and VHS (especially the clam shell Disney movies).
ReplaceSelect@reddit
Library
aroundincircles@reddit
I live in the middle of no where. We have a library, but is... very limited. We donate to it (usually through late fees, LOL) heavily, but it's still small. I'm mostly watching stuff online and if I like it, I buy it. I give my money to those that earned it.
ReplaceSelect@reddit
Would you have a relatively close Blockbuster? I’ve seen Family Videos in some small towns when those existed. I remember when grocery stores rented movies too. It was a bit older movies but way cheaper
aroundincircles@reddit
Yes because I think there is a bigger market for it smaller/more rural areas where there are older people who don't like technology, and internet can be iffy, especially when there is bad weather.
SlapHappyDude@reddit
Do you want to pay $10 a movie and worry about late fees?
Public library is great for legacy DVDs.
aroundincircles@reddit
My library is small. I live in the middle of nowhere. I buy dvd's at walmart in the $5 often enough.
censoredredditor13@reddit
I bought a dvd player and get them from the library - it’s been great.
aroundincircles@reddit
we do that, but our library is small because I live in the middle of nowhere, another reason I dislike streaming, because the times I want to sit a watch a movie (like when the weather is bad) our internet can be flaky.
ibanezer83@reddit
Hell yeah
MinusGovernment@reddit
TLDR Fuck Blockbuster because their stupid late fee policy cost them quite a bit of businesses from me.
I'm personally glad Blockbuster died. I lived in a small town with a 45 minute commute when I first got a job where I live now. I used the 5 movies 5 days $5 deal quite often because cable was not available where I lived. The last time I ever rented from them I forgot to take the movies back with me for 2 days but I just figured I would owe another $5 for re-rental anyway so I wasn't too concerned. The next time I tried to rent though they told me I had $38 in late fees I owed before I could rent again. I was informed that their policy was to charge each movie separately at the price it would rent for by itself instead of any deal it was under originally. I told them it would be a cold day in hell before they got anymore business from me and I would not be paying the late fees either and walked out never to return. They apparently closed before it ever got sold to collections or something because I never had to pay the late fees. I started an account at Hollywood instead and used them until Netflix was a thing.

Honestly I miss payless, shoes are so damn expensive now
Terrible_Emotion_710@reddit
Payless, definitely payless
gnomequeen2020@reddit
Yes! I could run in there at the last minute because I needed a pair of heels for a dressy work event or interview, and I could get something super basic, in a wide width, for less than $20. We also had them in small towns/cities. Now, the shoe stores locally only sell sneakers and sandals, so I have to drive to the larger city and spend $50+.
Plus, Payless always had weird, funky shoes to make my 90s teen self happy.
kg51113@reddit
Yes! I live in a small city. I needed dress shoes a few years ago for a wedding and I couldn't find them anywhere! Nothing crazy. Just black heels in early fall. I had to order online and cross my fingers that they would fit and arrive on time!

80s/90s Kmart. Before they tried to be an upscale department store with designer everything. Give me halfway decent clothes and shoes for a lower price. Also the subs.
One_Market_9335@reddit
I remember mostly late 90s Kmart. What was different about it in the 80s?
RealityOk9823@reddit
Well 90s K-Mart was fine also. I was younger in the 80s so it was more of a wonderland to me then. Reading books while my mom shopped, looking at the firearms, etc.

Came here to say this… peak Sears was a force of nature. That annual Christmas catalog was essential autumn reading in the 80’s
Tangential_Comment@reddit
Used to be able to order full on house materials in a pre made set, no?
mindpivot@reddit
Yeah! They were pretty high quality, too! People still covet them when they can find them
zealot_ratio@reddit
someone digitized a lot of those old catalogues. It's crazy to go back and look through them.
DeuceOfDiamonds@reddit
If they were more forward-thinking, they could've been Amazon
LtPowers@reddit
Not burdened with all that real estate, they couldn't.
drewbaccaAWD@reddit
If they were more forward thinking, they could have cut down on the real estate a bit, much sooner than when they started closing stores.
LtPowers@reddit
They could have, but those stores were their primary source of revenue. That would have an enormous gamble.
drewbaccaAWD@reddit
Sure, I don't disagree. But we are dealing with the realm of hypotheticals and I think the spirit of the first comment in this thread was simply that with all the catalog stuff, Sears was effectively the precursor to Amazon but at some point went in the wrong direction and if they had zigged where they should have zagged, who knows.
But the reality is, physical stores are what built the brand in a day and age that there was a demand for that. Demand went away almost over night as the internet rose up. It's less the lack of forward thinking than things just didn't line up.
It is kind of wild how much the retail landscape changed over about ten years, it's like we existed in two entirely different worlds.
LtPowers@reddit
Yeah, that's my point.
I say the same thing to people who say Kodak should have succeeded in a digital photography landscape. They don't understand that there was no way a film company the size of Kodak could pivot on a dime to a filmless business model. Should they have seen it coming? Maybe, but even if they had there wasn't much they could have done about it without mass layoffs and a fire sale of assets.
mindpivot@reddit
Ironically, real estate was their only valuable asset toward the end and in bankruptcy
Secret_Paper2639@reddit
Sears holdings: hey we found something the previous exec didn't ruin!
TheMadDaddy@reddit
This is what I've been saying! The biggest mail order company failed to adapt to what they were originally famous for.
DeuceOfDiamonds@reddit
Absolutely. They already had the infrastructure in place. Just needed to adapt to the new tech, which yes, would have taken time. And since another poster mentioned their real estate issues, they could start divesting themselves of some that property along and along, if need be.
The real estate might put them in an even better position than Amazon, as then they could either send the purchases to your house, or you could come get them as soon as they got there.
Major missed opportunity, in my estimation. But that's hindsight for you.
belunos@reddit
You know got-damn good and well you wouldn't go there if they were still around
mindpivot@reddit
If they were still around I’d never have seen the inside of a Marshalls, Kohls, Home Depot, or probably WalMart or Target had Sears kept up with the modern world
bcentsale@reddit
I'd give it an 80% chance that I would. Almost all of my hand tools are Craftsman. The better quality ones belonged to my grandfather. My shop vac is a Craftsman. I still have a handful of Kenmore-branded appliances, large and small. Half of my kitchen and bath accessories were wedding registry items from Sears. Almost all of my pre-2014 clothing was from Sears. They fit that perfect niche between fall-apart Walmart crap and high end designer stuff (that also tends to fall apart). Most of my son's baby stuff was from Sears. I was in there at least quarterly.
fns1981@reddit
Same! I am currently in the market for a new vacuum cleaner and I could weep because you have to pay upwards of $800 now if you want something that lasts more than five years. That used to be a freaking given. I just want a shop where I can get something solid that won't end up in a landfill without having to sell some organs to make it happen. I really miss the Sears and JCP of yore.
DBE113301@reddit
I know I would. Frankly, I can't stand going to Lowe's and Home Depot. I was always more of a Sears guy. Plus, if I never heard one of those Josh Lucas home Depot commercials ever again, I would be happy. Just because I can do some things myself at home, that doesn't mean that I get my jollies off of doing things at home.
Undercover_Dave@reddit
Same as Toys R Us. I want the REAL 1980s Toys R Us, not this side Macy's section of bullshit.

Confident_Win_5469@reddit
Only parts of Canada now. They have started closing some stores and renovating others to allow indoor playgrounds.
mesosuchus@reddit
And sell vinyl. Don't forget the vinyl section that used to be their Funkopop area (also they dropped video games which technically all the stores are soon)
Confident_Win_5469@reddit
Didn't they buy a music store and added it to their Toys' R Us? My current city closed their Toys R us and I have no reason to drive 2 hours to go to one.

zealot_ratio@reddit
This. I would love to go back in time and get some quality Craftsman tools. Sears was the Hank Hill of tools. Solid, dependable, not flashy.
Sharessa84@reddit
I'm going to have to agree. Sears built this country and its a shame when they closed down their stores.
squarebodynewb@reddit
Literally if you could sears used to ship homes for you to build. Basically tiny homes thru train freight.
withasmackofham@reddit
Tiny? My neighborhood has lots of sears houses, and the Veronas are like 2K sq ft. which was huge by 1920s standards.
squarebodynewb@reddit
Sorey. All the ones ive seen were about 900sqft.
socoyankee@reddit
The largest was the 2900sqft Magnolia that cost between 5000-5800. Iirc.
squarebodynewb@reddit
Oh damn! I didnt know that. All i saw were maybe 900SqFt ones.
trcharles@reddit
And not-so-tiny houses too!
Squirrel_Kng@reddit
My sister lives in a sears home. Small but cute
brainfreeze77@reddit
I don't think people would pay pre 70's prices even for the quality Craftsman use to be. Adjusted for inflation and even worse buying power Craftsman tools were VERY expensive.
DrMcJedi@reddit
looks in his garage at multiple completely functional 70’s-80’s Craftsman hand and power tools
I’m okay with paying more to buy once with a lifetime warrantee…
trcharles@reddit
But the new generations absolutely are not. They have not been raised/born into a world where value is something they’re taught - or that many can afford. They’ve been brought up in a disposable world. And as we get poorer and a nation (US) and a world, most people can’t afford to invest in long-lasting, quality products.
brainfreeze77@reddit
You're either way to old to be in this sub or you didn't buy those tools new. Most people when they lament the downfall of Craftsmen only point to the quality and don't consider the price. To my point a 1/2 inch ratchet in 1970 costs $9.89, that's the ratchet by itself. According to the 1970 Sears spring summer catalogue page 693. Adjust for JUST inflation not loss of buying power that is $89 today. A Milwaukee 1/2 inch fine tooth ratchet with a lifetime warranty is $65.
DrMcJedi@reddit
I didn’t buy them new, but my dad and grandpas did…
geekgirlwww@reddit
I wonder if we have old Craftsman tools in the basement from my grandfather. He left a large chunk of his tools and big stuff when my grandparents moved out. My father has a degree in feelings and no useful skills so he has no idea what’s down there.
Impossible-Taco-769@reddit
And without having to give them a damn email and a subscription based plan for YOUR tools. Fuck private equity. They destroyed Toy R Us, Mervyns, Sears because they were more to investors dead. They fucked hard working Americans out of their pensions. Fuck Black Rock, Bane Capital and the rest.
megamanx4321@reddit
MANY years ago my granddad found a Craftsman screwdriver by the side of the road. One day he used to try to open a can of paint and broke the tip off. He took it to Sears, explained that he wasn't using it for its intended purpose when it broke. Salesman just handed him a new one. He said that he didn't even buy it. Salesman said it didn't matter, it's a lifetime warranty.
bcentsale@reddit
And right there is why we are where we are. I think most of us in here would pay for quality if we could. The problem is that Walmart-driven mentality undercut "good" with "barely good enough," companies saw tgat ot was more profitable to get some poorly made Chinese knockoff, and that choice was simply taken away from us. My family didn't have a whole lot of money, but we knew that if we saved and bought a single $100 power tool from Craftsman, it would last longer than the 3 consecutive $40 tools from Kmart or Walmart that would break down and need the replacement.
AllyLB@reddit
Are we talking about the Sears that sold house kits that were good houses.

This feels controversial because I think most preferred Blockbuster, but Hollywood Video holds such fond memories for me - it’d be coming back no contest.
Having worn Payless shoes, I will be curious if anyone at all suggests that one because oooouch.
sandglider@reddit
I'm with you, Hollywood Video was better. Blockbuster carried a 100 copies of the newest release. Hollywood Video only carried 50, but that meant they had room for 50 other movies that Blockbuster didn't (especially in their back catalog)
withasmackofham@reddit
I definitely preferred Hollywood Video. They had a promotion called Game Vault, where you could rent non-new release games for like 2.50 each. On the first of the month, dozens of boys would race to Hollywood Video after school to try and snag any new games that were moved to the game vault. Eventually my friends and I figured out that if we rode our bikes to the the affluent suburb a couple miles away, the games would always be available, because the rich kids had already played them.
Frisnism@reddit
HOLLYWOOD VIDEO introduced me to indépendant film. they had international film and hard to find lower budget movies. I never went back to blockbuster after I discovered it and I really miss the adventure of browsing discovering amazing films there.
akm1111@reddit
I often scratch that same itch now with Movie Trading Post.
lucycat7@reddit
Payless but mostly because they were one of the few brick and mortar stores that carried adult shoes in small sizes. It’s nearly impossible to find size 5 or 5.5 at DSW or Rack Room or even Journey’s.
akm1111@reddit
Same thing, but larger women's size. Need a 10.5W shoe after having kids flattened my feet. Will settle for an 11W, but it's difficult to find cute shoes in person nowadays.
illprobablyeditthis@reddit
Honestly my answer was Payless. I got invited to a beach wedding last year and realized I had no suitable "nice" flip flops to wear with my dress. The regular shoe stores wanted me to spent 60 bucks on a pair and neither target or Walmart had what I was looking for. Ended up having to buy flip flops off Amazon and I was pretty pissed about it.
I realize this is a very niche answer but I dont have any real use for any of the other stores lol

I think I went into a Blockbuster maybe 2-3 times in my life, and I always got weird vibes there. I much preferred Hollywood, at least after all the local stores closed down.
eckoman_pdx@reddit
I couldn't stand to blockbuster, the late fee policy was insane. You had to have it back by like 10 or 11 AM are they charged $1 a day. Hollywood video gave us until 1:00 p.m. and would usually waive the fee if we were even remotely close to that.
We lived 2 minutes walking from a blockbuster, but always either drove or hitched a ride down to Hollywood Video instead.
jtmann05@reddit
We didn’t have either in my small hometown. Just a couple of local spots and rentals available at the grocery stores. That said, I would gladly take any video rental store. I’ve started building up my physical collection again after getting sick of streaming services
PuppyJakeKhakiCollar@reddit
Lol, the comment directly under yours suggests Payless.
DHammer79@reddit
My wife would probably say Payless.
Strange_Bacon@reddit
I really don't know. All excep FYE and Payless I have old fond memories. Toy R Us, always begging my parents to go even to just look around, in the eyes of a 10 year old the place was magical. As an adult when my kids were little and Toys R Us was still around, not so magical, kind of painful just trying to not spend an hour in there.
As a teenager, Blockbuster on Friday and Saturday night, trying to rent a new release, lucking out and getting your first choice or not and walking around for 30 min with friends or a date trying to decide on something else. Later teenager, renting some romcom and hoping my girlfriend's parents weren't home.
Circuit city was college years. Spent a good amount in there and bestbuy. CC always seemed to have slightly higher end stuff but it's old model of commissioned sales people, them having to punch in what you wanted then having to get it pulled from the back was already dated. Ended up working at a bestbuy one summer, that took the last bit of fun out of that kind of store for me.
Hollywood video was more of the same hoping to get the movie I wanted, just at a later period of my life. I had just graduated, my then girlfriend and I were poor and a lot of Friday nights were spent finding something to watch for the weekend as entertainment.
Fry's expanded to Texas right as I graduated school and moved back. I had a little bit of a side hustle building computers for family members so early on it was great place to get gear. The nearest one was like a 40 min drive. Loved opening the Friday Fry's ad in the newspaper to see the deals. Moved to GA and then the opened one 15 min from my house, it was heaven. Then slowly the decline.
Sears, I can still smell the popcorn they used to pop near the hardware section when I was a kid. Kind of didn't like the store when I was young, although the christmas catalog and a sharpie was fun. As an adult, bought a good deal of appliances there.
In the end they are all gone for a good reason. Graduating college I already knew that music was going to go to digital MP3's. I was pretty sure that video would go that way, I just knew home internet would need to go to broadband, I didn't vision it changing as fast as it did and it being supplemented by high speed mobile.
The stores, They were dinosaurs. It's all but impossible to pay employees to staff the store, pay rent and still keep prices as low as Amazon. It's all too easy to click and check out and have the item two days later at your doorstep. Fry's demise sucked. In the end I'd be bored, wanted to go somewhere to browse and get away from the family for an hour. Slowly the shelves emptied, then they just selling as seen on tv crap. The last time I went they had mattresses for sale.
Great memories, for all different stages of my life, but I don't think I'd go to many of them any more.

It wasn't private equity in this case, though, was it?
bcentsale@reddit
They were struggling against the cheap-Chinese-crap powerhouse that is Walmart to begin with, and then the equity firm came along promising to modernize them, only to sell it all off.
LtPowers@reddit
I thought they were bought by Kmart, not private equity.
bcentsale@reddit
Eddie Lambert was an investment firm owner who wrangled the CEO position of KMart when it was in bankruptcy, turned around and somehow orchestrated the buyout of/merger with Sears, and then proceeded to milk every last penny from both for over a decade. He walked away billions richer after stripping both companies for parts and then flushing them down the drain, as he had with other companies in the past. Sears was my first job, and my younger brother worked there while it all happened.

The whirlpool washer I got from Sears just died. I’m pretty sure it was at least 15 years old. I bet the new one craps out right after the warranty expires.
thatotherguy57@reddit
100% behind this.
LovelyHead82@reddit
There is no need for any of these stores now except for Toys R Us
Toys R Us was a magical place growing up and every kid should have this experience
Colonial13@reddit
Toys R Us. I’d love for my kids to experience that.
alwaysfuntime69@reddit
Toys r us is the best answer and anyone who says otherwise are fools!
porschephille@reddit
My older kids got to experience it…the younger ones never will.
TXhorndog@reddit
Toys R Us was great when it was just toys. Wasn't nearly exciting when they sold strollers, diapers, and kids clothes.
nucl3ar0ne@reddit
Mine got to experience it but don't fully remember because they were too young. But they absolutely loved it at the time. It was like a free playdate going there.
Apprehensive-Cat-111@reddit
They seem to be slowly coming back. I plan to take my 9 year old
Johnykbr@reddit
I thought they were just small pop ups and not the real thing.
Apprehensive-Cat-111@reddit
Yeah there have been some pop ups. But some are actually reopening. Near me a full store is coming back.
SilentSerel@reddit
The one in my area is a shadow of its former self. It feels like one of those calendar stores except it also has toys.
unlovelyladybartleby@reddit

GeetarEnthusiast85@reddit
There's one in northern New Jersey, too.
Sea-Significance8047@reddit
I live in NYC. Is it worth the trip/just like it used to be?
GeetarEnthusiast85@reddit
It's in American Dream, the huge mall in East Rutherford. It not huge like the Toys R Us we remember but it is spacious with multiple sections and was fun to walk through.
If you have young kids who've never experienced a toy store like that, it might be fun to take them.
Reportersteven@reddit
One just opened last month in Washington state. They’re coming back.
Everynevers@reddit
Songs are magic spells. I believe “I don’t wanna grow up. I’m a Toys R Us kid.” is why SOOOOOOOO many of us look younger than our elders.
ThunderDungeon02@reddit
I can still vividly remember the entrance. I also remember playing the virtual boy on display...and by playing I mean having red lines physically assault my eyes.
GoatGoatPowerRangers@reddit
This is the answer and it isn't even close. Sure, I feel a nostalgic pang for Blockbuster, but they could one up in my town and I'd go once for old time sake, look around, rent nothing, go home and watch a movie on Netflix.
Toys R Us? You could spend real money there, even today. There's nothing like it. My kids browse the Amazon toy catalog for Christmas. They don't know what it's like to toy shop.
AQuietViolet@reddit
Avec real FAO Scwartz, too.
OstrichMean7004@reddit
I'm so lucky my kids got to go to these a lot (they're 19 and 22) -- if we'd had them maybe 5 years later, they would have missed so much.
Solo4114@reddit
Same. My kid would love that.
Automaticman01@reddit
It's such a bummer that the best toy store I can take my kids to around here is a few aisles at Target or Walmart.
lostcosmonaut307@reddit
I love and miss Fry’s, but I don’t wanna grow up, I’m a Toys R Us kid 100%. Thankfully my kids are both old enough they got to experience it before it went away.

monkey_doo@reddit
Fry’s they had some killer deals
work-throw-away-420@reddit
we lovingly called Fry's "The Man Store" it had everything we loved in one huge place!
CaptZombieHero@reddit
Which killed them
eckoman_pdx@reddit
That's actually not what killed Fry's. What killed Fry's was actually their attempted move back to the consignment model they were originally founded on.
The original founders of Fry's electronics founded it on a consignment model you typically see in grocery stores. By the early 2000s, that had switched to Fry's holding inventory on their own and not be a consignment.
In the 2010's, they attempted no renegotiate those contracts and move back to the consignment model. Manufacturers wanted no part of it, they just shifted their business elsewhere. Fry's kept trying to negotiate, inventory kept dwindling as a result of the fact they were not trying to hold inventory on their own like like most companies do, and that eventually killed them.
They may have been able to survive with the consignment model how they never ditched away from it, but the moment they got rid of it for a standard inventory model they were never going to be able to go back to it.
Source: long time Fry's employees I knew who work there since the day they opened in Wilsonville after buying the Incredible Universe from Tandy Corp in 1996 (and who worked out Incredibly Universe previously).
SDNick484@reddit
Very interesting. I knew they were pushing that consignment model at the end, and their vendors were clearly having none of it. I never knew they used that back in their early history.
It's such a shame they are gone. I drove almost an hour just to check out the Microcenter when they finally reopened a San Jose location. I definitely miss those types of stores (including old Radio Shacks back when they used to see actual electronic components).
wynonnaspooltable@reddit
I miss Fry’s so much. I could get a milk shake, buy new RAM, and find retro style toaster.
aroundincircles@reddit
Microcenter is replacing fry’s with an actual working business model.
Anand999@reddit
Correction - Microcenter is replacing about 1/3rd of the Fry's.
That both explains why Frys was so amazing in its heyday and also why they went out of business.
aroundincircles@reddit
By replacing, I mean filling the gap left by fry’s
My favorite computer store was PCClub.
JaggedOrchid@reddit
I loved Frys. I also love Microcenter. I just miss how themed Frys was.
aroundincircles@reddit
The fry's by me was never themed. it was an ultimate electronics that got bought out by fry's they just changed the name on the front, it just looked like a massive best buy.
Clamwacker@reddit
The Wilsonville one? I worked there briefly in 2000. We joked it was the warehouse theme.
aroundincircles@reddit
Tempe, AZ.

aroundincircles@reddit

TeutonJon78@reddit
Too bad they have such limited locations.
My nearest Fry's was 20-30 min away. My closest microcenter is like 2 days of driving away.
aroundincircles@reddit
Finally getting one in AZ. it will be a 2 hour drive vs a 9+ hour drive.

SweetCosmicPope@reddit
Fry's was the tits. We still had one up here in Washington up until the very end when they all shut down.
They price-matched with amazon, so if you wanted your stuff right then and there you could get it for amazon prices without having to wait. I bought TVs, movies, video games, mounting kits, pc parts...
I miss that store.
work-throw-away-420@reddit
they have FYE still in our local mall and they sell movies/ music and anime related stuff....
Jclark36816@reddit
I have literally never heard of fry’s or f.y.e. What region were they?
LemonSkye@reddit
Not sure about anywhere else, but they were definitely in the northeast.
OstrichMean7004@reddit
Fry's was an electronics store mostly in California. They had two cool things about them:
1) they were "techy" electronics stores. They had all of the normal stuff you'd find at a Best Buy, but also pretty much anything else you'd be looking for, including electronics components, computer cases, and everything else
2) every store had a "theme". And when I say "theme" I mean they had exteriors (and to lesser extent, interiors) fully designed as things like Mayan Tombs, Think DisneyLand-level decor.
VinceAmonte@reddit (OP)
FYE was California, the one in the image is the old Burbank Fry’s and I miss it so much. FYE was nationwide I think? I’m not sure.
OstrichMean7004@reddit
They also had a Fry's in the Vegas area, but yeah -- it was mostly California.
GenericDave65@reddit
F.Y.E. is still around. I was in the one in Gallup, NM last weekend.
Impossible_Stomach26@reddit
We had a Fry's and an FYE in Indianapolis.
Jclark36816@reddit
Funny because I grew up near Burbank but we left for Colorado when I was 8 so that would explain it
LtPowers@reddit
FYE originally stood for "For Your Entertainment". They sold music and videos. They still do, but they've added a lot of pop-culture merch and exotic snacks to keep the lights on.
ranaldo20@reddit
FYE was after my time in my region, the took over Camelot Music locations in our malls when I was in my 20's.
Sharessa84@reddit
I only know F.Y.E. because it bought out the local Blockbuster Music in the mid 2000s. I think it lasted another 4-5 years before it closed down.
PeppermintEvilButler@reddit
We still have an fye in holyoke mass mall

Blockbuster. I'm in Canada, we still have toys r us. Though it's struggling. A bunch of their stores just closed around my area.
CJKatz@reddit
The Toys R Us near me has an HMV inside it. Things are weird up here.
spderweb@reddit
They all do. HMV died a while back. They must have owned the IP.
But it's a clear sign that they're struggling. If they lower prices to compete against the Internet, instead of trying to get every last cent out of it, it would be more popular.

Electronic_World_894@reddit
No it has more modern games than NES 😆 but it never closed and has basically the same layout as it did when I was a kid. The only change is they added an indoor climber last year for kids.

Once I got my license, I would pretend to go to church youth group (hated it but my parents insisted I go) but would actually drive to the mall only a couple miles away and sit in Waldenbooks reading the latest VC Andrews.

When I was in college, the laptop I’d bought at Circuit City died. There was an issue with connection to the screen that prevented the BIOS from running. Even with the lid closed and an external monitor attached, I couldn’t get the computer to fully boot up.
I was in the middle of some projects that were only saved to my hard drive and really didn’t want to start over.
The folks at Circuit City couldn’t save my computer, but they did have something that could put my laptop hard drive in so that I could read it as an external drive on another computer. My files were saved and I was determined to be a customer for life. Unfortunately, that ended when they closed all their stores.

Sears. One of my favorite retailers to go to.
Fun fact, I bought a phone from Frys years ago and paid the tax in store with the rest supposed to go on a 24-month payment plan with the carrier. I never paid another dollar for that phone. I called the carrier after a couple months to see what's up and they didn't have anything on it, but as soon as they did, it would be shown on my bill. Never showed up.

Watching a movie we all wanted to see, but not quite bad enough to see in theaters.

OMG! I was just thinking about Kmart and Toys R us this morning. I’ve been babysitting my grandson this week, and I was thinking about how sad it is that I’ll never be able to take him to buy a toy at Toys R US. How sad is that? And I’ll never be able to take him to get an Icee and cheesy bread at the Little Caesar’s in the Kmart. Those were things I did with my daughter at that age, there are just so many places and things we did years ago that we can’t ever do again.

The nearest Fry’s Electronics to me looked like an Aztec temple on the outside. When my mom got her retirement cash out for her then-job, we went there to buy a new TV and had to flag down a salesperson because no one thought a single woman in her early 50s and her two kids were going to spend money there. Meanwhile, I’d go there with a friend and we’d have them all up on us because we clearly looked like a DINK nerd lesbian couple.
