Yea I ended up buying one and I timed my barrel nut with the shims. As the turnbuckle interfaces with the barrel but to align the handguard. I like it though. Wasn't hard.

Doesn't look like it. The MOD4s use a two-screw clamp and steel inserts in the QD sockets. This appears to be ye olde standard Atlas R-One with more intelligent vent cuts.

These are solid rails and IMO better than the AERO Atlas they are built off of since they have 7-sided MLOK instead of just 5. IIRC this rail is also extremely close to a clone of the new UKR OD-green looking rifle thing some people are trying to clone. They are however kind of a PITA to install since the barrel nut needs to be timed with shims.

Holy shit the clarity, I just realized all the people that never shoot their guns isn't because ammo is expensive; but because loading a magazine must be too hard! Harder than timing a barrel nut at least, pushing down so hard with those callous-less thumbs on.every.single.round.

Harbor freight torque wrench my friend. I've had one for... 23 years? roughly and it's been great and used for many things. Less than $20 and you can do it right. 35-60lbs for Aero S-One this should be the same, but sure 35/40 works... I like everything properly torqued.

While I do have more than my fair share if torque tools: “Properly torqued” is a big window here and “timing+shims” = any wrench will do. Ive yet to see “hand snug+1/8th turn” be less than 35 ftlbs or over 50ft lbs @ wet torque values with aeroshell applied.

I’d always error on the side of bottom of torque spec to prevent any galling or crushing of any parts.

Green loctite on any barrel extension that has play in a receiver & shims in the barrel extension pin pocket for anything using front sight post gas blocks.

But I'm just replying bc Im on the toilet. I agree with you.

hahaha for sure, I've not actually taken and "tested my torque value for hand snug + 1/8" turn" to know if it's 35-50lbs was my only thought. While I also agree with you, probably completely fine with aeroshell and hand snug + 1/8th – in similar application, in last couple weeks I've seen two guys that completely stripped their optic plate screws (trying to remove them) after they were originally set with "hand tight with blue loctite"... both on CZ Shadow 2's... so I'm very with you on bottom of torque spec but also just makes me confident in knowing I hit 10lbs, 25lbs, 35lbs or whatever is called for. I do really think, while you can "cheap out" on optic plates to a degree or even optics in general – using the shit screws they come with is a real problem and I am buying high quality screws for everything (I got a Gideon Omega and yeah, that came with dog shit hardware and I used other screws. Ultimately didn't like the optic so it's sitting in box but word to wise).

But yeah I am the guy with .001 sheet steel for making shims around the barrel extension if needed, then Loctite 620 (what I assume you mean by green and not green thread locker) tho I try to get BCM for thermal fit for most my builds. Just got a CMT billet upper to pair with wedgelock handguard (pinned connection for anti rotation) so probably next build I'll be playing with fitment on an upper I've not used before. Cheers

I have installed and ran multiple Alta’s handguards and never once had to time the barrel nut. He says nothing about timing the nut for the wedges, rather to line up one of the grooves for the gas tube but even that isn’t necessary.

I also have multiple Atlas hand guards and you’ve just gotten lucky. It’s a pretty loose tolerance but if it’s not somewhat timed the locking wedges won’t sit completely flush with the handguard.

The tolerance is wide enough that the torque range is all you need to time it correctly. Shims are just overcomplicating things with this barrel nut.
