Be honest, did anybody see anything in 3D art?

I never could find anything in these but I heard of you look at it long enough you might see a sail boat.
No-Drawer9169@reddit
Yes, they’re actually amazing.
Look at it, go cross eyed so that you see double and then re align the double images without actually undoing the cross eyed thing and it emerges as a 3d image.
TurboSnackage@reddit
It’s a schooner
TurboSnackage@reddit
azazyl@reddit
Yep… penguins. Not that complicated.
ezhammer@reddit
For sure. Your eyes get trained to see them quicker.
darkartbootleg@reddit
Did you ever get the inverse image? I found that if I slightly crossed my eyes and then unfocused, I could see it but it would be flipped and look like it was sunken in instead of coming out at me.
TimedogGAF@reddit
Oh wow, I thought this was how you were supposed to always see them. Maybe this is why some of them are hard to decipher for me (like the one in the OP).
darkartbootleg@reddit
You’re not alone, there’s quite a few.
ThunderSnow-@reddit
That's not how everyone always saw them? I have only ever seen them sunken in.
nerdkraftnomad@reddit
Yep. I can see it both ways.
PeteyMitch42@reddit
That's all I've ever been able to see. I can't see it normally, only the inverse.
dustysquareback@reddit
Me too!
mandileigh@reddit
I can only see them the correct way if I'm looking at a printed one and can move it closer.
darkartbootleg@reddit
Oh that’s too bad, it looks much better the other way.
Macjeems@reddit
That’s exactly how I would see these images, cross my eyes completely, then slowly kinda bring my eyes back into alignment. At some point in that process the image would appear, sunken into the page. I kinda thought that was the intended way to view them…
nomad1128@reddit
Wait wutttttt, mine only ever pop towards me
travelinmatt76@reddit
there are 2 methods to make these images, parallel eye and cross eye. Most are done parallel. If you use the wrong method to look at them they inverse. Some people can only do the cross eye method so they see most of them inverted.
darkartbootleg@reddit
Yeah, it’s kinda hard to describe it, but it’s like I almost start to cross my eyes before looking past the image to make it appear and that causes it to flip.
phillium@reddit
Here, try these ones out Cross View Magic Eye Single Image Stereograms (SIS). They work by the crossing your eyes method instead of uncrossing your eyes method.
darkartbootleg@reddit
Oh cool, thanks!
Plane_Chance863@reddit
I've definitely had weird things happen, where it wasn't the image it was supposed to be. I'm not sure it was necessarily the inverse, but I had some pretty confusing pictures sometimes. Usually if I tried again I got it right.
darkartbootleg@reddit
Same here, actually with this particular image, first time I tried it, it worked no problem, then I tried to get the inverse and that worked no problem too. But then I tried to go back and see it normal again and it was like the layers were separated so I was seeing triple of everything in the image. Fun stuff, I still have my magic eye books.
NavierIsStoked@reddit
Its supposed to be sunken in, i think. This particular one doesn't make sense coming out. The top of the frame is flat like a wall, the bottom of the frame is angled, like a floor would be with proper perspective. Coming out, the angled floor doesn't make sense.
I can flip flop my eyes and see both perspectives. The sunken in makes way more sense. I don't see a train though, i see a marching parade of duck things.
paulbrock2@reddit
yeah you can see either way (though each image is designed for one way). social media groups with this sort of content often post both cross-eyed and parallel versions.
ezhammer@reddit
Man, naw I never saw that. I think you need a doctor.
Willing_Actuary_4198@reddit
My eyes are so trained that certain wall papers in random places will pop out into 3d if I try. Obviously no image but certain parts of the pattern will float out in front of others
nerdkraftnomad@reddit
Haha my floral kitchen wallpaper was like that for me.
hamburgler26@reddit
You just have to be able to cross your eyes and be at a good distance and it is instant. Even all these years later I can get into the image in a few seconds.
Prossdog@reddit
Yeah, I can get them all within about a second now.
remoteworker9@reddit
I never could.
Emergency-Pack-5497@reddit
Looks like a weird train with a penguin conductor
Consistent-Camp5359@reddit
Ah. I see that now.
silver-moon-7@reddit
It's a hard one to read compared to most of them
I wonder how someone came up with this stuff in the first place?
xtlhogciao@reddit
The second I saw it, before I opened it to read the comments, I thought “whoever can’t see it is going to think we’re making this shit up.”
Iamthegreenheather@reddit
I still can't see it and I'm really sad about it.
Lorindale@reddit
I also miss Stan Lee.
Groundsw3ll@reddit
iirc look at something further away, keep that focus, then put the picture in front of you. You’ll have to experiment with initial focal distance if the stereogram is on your phone since it’s close to your face. The trick back when I had these posters is to look at something 2x the distance away then the poster.
xtlhogciao@reddit
Try doing the same thing as when you used to make hotdog links with your index fingers. I suggested this earlier in here - I’ve probably done so a dozen times when these things are posted, and occasionally people say it worked for them (it’s hard to explain/I don’t really know of any other way to explain it; I’ve always just been lucky enough to be able to do it within a couple seconds).
gaarkat@reddit
I thought the same and then finally saw it. I have some questions about the subject matter lol.
Plastic_Difference54@reddit
I see a whole bunch of penguins in a forest with a shopping carts? lol. But it’s the Penguin from Bat-Man.
FunksGroove@reddit
I see this as well. There’s two penguins and the front one has a bag in its left hand.
Iamthegreenheather@reddit
Why can't I see it??!!!
FunksGroove@reddit
I used to practice all the time growing up. It came back naturally. Not easy if you’ve never done it though.
Zeqhanis@reddit
I was trying to figure out what was in his left flipper.
Zeqhanis@reddit
Ah. Here's the image. It's a briefcase.
dopamine_skeptic@reddit
I thought it was a penguin with a little baby penguin holding its “hand” and they are waiting for the train? Weird subject for a 3d picture like this.
railmanmatt@reddit
A baby's arm holding an apple?🤣🤣
Acceptingoptimist@reddit
I didn't realize that was a beak. I thought it was a fat guy with a cigar, top hat and bad case of gout.
sysmimas@reddit
And a top hat
EggsceIlent@reddit
Yep I see it. When I was a kid took me a long time to figure out you just had to like cross your eyes or focus past the picture. Was hard to explain and get.
Haven't looked at this one but in general, yep I see what's in them
PowderedToastBro@reddit
I got “draw me like one of your French girls”… kinda thing. It didn’t make sense and even though I know what it is, I don’t see that.
_Internet_Hugs_@reddit
I don't think it's a conductor, just a penguin with small luggage and a top hat.
Evendim@reddit
Yeah it is a steam train, with an engine and some carriages, a weird penguin conductor with a Top Hat and holding a briefcase, and another penguin looking to get on the train?
SpaceLemur34@reddit
I don't think it's a conductor, I think it's just a passenger getting on the train with some luggage.
railmanmatt@reddit
Nope, it's definitely a penguin conductor.
jstnpotthoff@reddit
Took me a minute to understand why the penguin was wearing a top hat to meet the alien.
ominous_squirrel@reddit
And the alien is doing the devil’s horns? 🤘
Jean_Paul_Fartre_@reddit
Maybe it’s Sir Topem Hat? He’s a penguin looking motherfucker.
Krazylegz1485@reddit
And kind of an asshole if I remember right. Haha.
JoeyRedmayne@reddit
Lol, I was thinking, is that a parade or train made of starfish? I was able to get the image multiple times and don’t understand what those beings are.
Ok_Percentage5157@reddit
Took me a minute with this one, but I was seeing a train. Not sure about the penguin?
ElleAnn42@reddit
I thought that the penguins were smurf houses, but I think you are right... Penguins and a train. Weird.
psychotronic_mess@reddit
Yeah, exactly. I see 3D images, what the fuck they are is anyone’s guess. It looked like a frog person in front, with a whole row of them behind it. There is some sort of totem on the left.
sicksixgamer@reddit
I see a train with two penguins boarding.
Jolly_Line@reddit
Some trippy ass penguins, they have skull smiles. Honestly, nice creepy vibes for the season. But if that’s a train, it’s a weird ass train. Looks more like terrain I climb in Vantage WA (Frenchman Coulee).
babyBear83@reddit
Penguin has a top hat and is a businessman.
TeutonJon78@reddit
Yep. It the background makes it really hard to tell what it actually is.
I had to zoom in which made finding the image a lot harder than at normal size.
BreakfastBeerz@reddit
I'm glad I read that....I could see the image pretty clearly, but still had no idea what it was... my first thought was a marching band with a conductor and someone carrying a balloon.
DBE113301@reddit
Yeah, I saw something, but I had no clue what I was looking at.
BeerAandLoathing@reddit
I was going to joke that it was a sailboat but I immediately saw the train and penguins too
punktualPorcupine@reddit
The front one looks like it’s holding a briefcase?
andyrocks@reddit
It's a sailboat
Several-Opening3803@reddit
I don’t know if the most credible answer is « a train with pinguins » or « I dont see it ». But yes, this is a train with pinguins.
jjmawaken@reddit
I was trying to figure woul what the heck that was but I think you're right
Consistent-Camp5359@reddit
It’s a magic eye poster like imagine. I saw the 3D picture but couldn’t tell what it was.
DarthNarsil@reddit
I have in other ones, but this all I can see is that there's something there, I can't tell what it is supposed to be.
Still_Strawberry8134@reddit
I never have on any of these, but I also have an astigmatism which as I understand it can do things to your sense of depth perception, so I always assumed that was why I couldn’t see them.
Sidetrackbob@reddit
Mostly not.
GonnaGoFat@reddit
When I first saw 3D art I was able to see it. The image I saw was framed and you’d look more at your reflection and the image appeared. Later I couldn’t see anything looking at new ones in book unless I looked at what the image was supposed to look like. Now I’m lucky if I see anything.

EuleMitKeule_tass@reddit
No. I tried until I realised those things don't work when you are colourblind.
timberwolf0122@reddit
I could never get these to work
free-toe-pie@reddit
Yes. My trick was to cross my eyes and then uncross them. That’s how I usually saw them.
springer0510@reddit
Zamboni?
Own_Picture_6442@reddit
Wow, it’s a schooner!
allmyguts@reddit
Whoa cool scooner!
Letsgogehls@reddit
NEVER saw these ever, not a one!!
cellrdoor2@reddit
Do you have maybe have an issue with depth perception? I could never see these as a kid and finally asked my eye doctor who told me that if your eyes aren’t totally synced up that it is impossible to see these.
CD274@reddit
Yeah I've had a lazy eye and my brother does too and we can't see shit
ThunderSnow-@reddit
My son has this issue. In the first four months of life your brain learns to use your two eyes together and to understand depth perception. If your eyes aren't perfectly aligned in that time, you don't learn that skill, and never can again. It's called strabismus.
cellrdoor2@reddit
Yeah, basically crossed eyes or lazy eyes. You can make it a little better with vision therapy or surgery but it’s almost impossible to correct completely IME. I’ve had three surgeries, done tons of vision therapy, and worn glasses my whole life and have terrible binocular vision. I can judge distances pretty well with one eye though so can still drive.m and even work in an art related field. I’m just thankful we were able to do the surgeries etc. My Dad wasn’t and he’s now legally blind in one eye.
Letsgogehls@reddit
I am dyslexic, maybe that has something to do with it?
xtlhogciao@reddit
Remember making hotdog links with your index fingers? Try that.
BlueVeins@reddit
….. what?
Sorry-Joke-4325@reddit
Hold your fingertips together and let your eyes focus out then see the hotdog hovering between your fingertips.
nerdkraftnomad@reddit
Oh yep. There's a lil smoky in between em, with fingernails.
syntheseiser@reddit
Wow, I completely forgot about this stupid human trick.
choosemath@reddit
But I need my fingers? Wouldn't just buying hotdogs be less traumatic? I don't need to see the images that badly.
captcraigaroo@reddit
https://i.redd.it/0xd0la0m3avf1.gif
CautionarySnail@reddit
Might want to get your binocular vision checked. Turns out that if you have issues seeing these, your eyes might not be fully getting depth perception.
Source: I have a diagnosed issue with depth perception; it’s common in folks with neurodivergence. It’s an issue that can be somewhat treated with eye coordination exercises and physical therapy.
Wendy-Windbag@reddit
I had lazy eye corrective surgery when I was very young, and I didn't realize it until way into adulthood that I do not have binocular vision. This is why I could never see 3D movies, use those DMV eye testers that you press your head into, and of course not binoculars or binocular microscopes without having to alternate eye focus. I had definitely spent hours as a kid staring at, into, and past the images in the Magic Eye book we had at home, and never saw a damn thing. I felt vindicated that I had a reason that I could not physically see such images, but at the same time kind of pissed off that neither my parents nor eye doctors ever gave me any insight as to having a vision issue. It was seen as a cosmetic procedure and nothing else, meanwhile I've had a life time of eye fatigue and visual migraine as my eyes struggle to focus, one eye compensating for the weaker one.
Fabulous-South-9551@reddit
Wow so this is how I find out I have autism.
choosemath@reddit
So, my depth perception is fine, but I do have an astigmatism. I've tried off an on for over 30 years and I just can't do it.
KingOfTheWikkerPeopl@reddit
If you’re trying to say that o capildnt read the note because of my binocular vision I’ll check. But I think that I just didn’t get it.
KingOfTheWikkerPeopl@reddit
THE HOURS WASTEDDDDD! ! I have tried all of the things and am convinced that most kids got some sort of news letter saying " Hey work together and try to convince the kids who didn't get this letter that there's something in these pictures" You guys and that stupid letter!
needed_an_account@reddit
The “trick” is to cross your eyes until the dots on the bottom overlap. If you can hold that, you’ll see “3d”
Sufficient_Turn_9209@reddit
Still no. It goes immediately from 2 dots to 3 dots and back again no matter how deliberately slow I adjust my perspective... and still hurts my brain. These make me feel like such an idiot! I know I've got great vision, and can spot anomalies immediately. I always find Waldo first dammit! 😆
IpeeInclosets@reddit
I am still convinced of this, adults and kids alike that perpetuate this 'joke' are the epitome of chaotic evil.
Physical-Bet1840@reddit
You just can't de-focus on the thing in front of you. Some people can, it's a learned skill. But it's also hard to explain how to do it. So it feels like it's one big troll. It's kind of like lucid dreaming, or like seeing both states of a necker's cube. You can learn to do it, but it's almost impossible to get someone else to.
KingOfTheWikkerPeopl@reddit
Nice try note kid. Heard that one before.
Away-Living5278@reddit
Lol.
You gotta put your face real close, cross your eyes and very slowly pull away. Then they pop out.
It is definitely a learned skill though. This one came up right away but I also remember many attempts in books in the 90s.
Rey_Mezcalero@reddit
Was like the boogie man come at you in 3D

I'm convinced it's an inside joke I never was a part of. I firmly believe it's not possible to see these and everyone is in on it.

Same
Eventually gave up when someone had a new one.
ApatheistHeretic@reddit
Me either... I also have pretty bad vision, so maybe that's a factor?
anonuemus@reddit
put it to your nose and focus your eyes on it, try to hold the same focus and pull it away from you
Hypnot0ad@reddit
There was. Dave Matthews Band album that had one of these on the back. I could never see them but I was determined so I stared at the back of that case CD for like 2 hours. Eventually a hand giving a peace sign popped out. I was not amused.
gringo1980@reddit
I read a book about these, to see them inversely, cross your eyes. To see them the correct way you need to make your eyes do the opposite.
lcsulla87gmail@reddit
Where were you 30 years ago that worked
SubNine5@reddit
Wow. I always could do the cross eyed thing but never make out what it was. This one was the first I did the opposite. Just focused on one little pixel/color, move the phone back and forth in my face and it worked!
sasspancakes@reddit
I have severe anisometropia. They'll give me the depth perception test at the eye doctor and I tell them to not even bother.
I got one of these books from the library once as a kid. I stared at it for hours going cross eyed, determined to see at least one. Thought there was something wrong with me. Turns out there was 😅
ladyeclectic79@reddit
You see how certain sections of the image are similar? Look past the image JUST ENOUGH so that the similar parts overlap once and hold it there. Sort of like how you hold up two fingers in front of you, look beyond just a bit, and the two fingers merge: find those two similar points in the image, merge them together (don’t overlap any more than the two adjoining similar-pieces) then just hold it there. Eventually if you hold those two similar-image-pieces together (aka, keep your eyes focused just so), you can start to see something forming that you can look over.
It’s the only way I’ve been able to do this.
acesavvy-@reddit
You are probably color blind like me
nfssmith@reddit
Yeah man, if you cross your eyes until two adjacent same shapes overlap the hidden image should pop out.
This one’s a train with a couple of penguins walking toward it.
ElectricPenguin6712@reddit
It's a schooner
Thegarz1963@reddit
Nope. Never did.
NartFocker9Million@reddit
What’s wrong with the train? Penguin with a suitcase and a silly hat in front of a mutant demon train.
nerdkraftnomad@reddit
Yep. Weirdest example ever.
Trismesjistus@reddit
It may be a mutant demon train, but I'm pretty sure it's just a steam locomotive
HearseWithNoName@reddit
I just think it's a train going through some woods. Is the pictures pattern that makes it look weird.
nerdkraftnomad@reddit
I see top hat penguins walking next to a weird train, with a diamond shape coming out of the engine car. One of them has a briefcase. I'm confused.
GrayMouser12@reddit
Like once, I think? And I tried my damndest. But my wife can always do it. I think when they tell me to relax my eyes it has the opposite effect of making me anxiously try to focus on relaxing my eyes which makes me... focus my eyes.

It’s just parallax. You have to align your two eyes with the pair of slightly offset images and your brain perceives the 3-D image. Also it’s a train with penguins boarding it.

I love this stuff because it requires a method to unlock. For me, I was taught to unfocus your vision, put the image up to your nose and then slowly pull the image away and it will refocus in 3D.
It’s a penguin with a top hat and briefcase walking toward the background with his face towards the right. There is another penguin walking the same way as him. They’re walking towards an object that is more abstract, either a train or a line of fellow penguins waiting for something.

The image isn't on the surface, you have to unfocus your eyes and look beyond the surface, like you're looking at someone about a foot away on the other side of a window.
I have trouble with them on screens though. I can only really see them clearly printed out.
Hamiltoncorgi@reddit
I never did. My Dad brought the book over and gave it to my son who said he could see the pictures. 20 years after my Dad is gone and my son admitted to me he never saw anything. Not a single picture.

I can now but in print I only ever saw one. The rest were just blurs to me.
What I have learned this year is that as my eyes are changing, the distance at which I can see the magic eye things is different too (It makes sense but you don’t think of that by default and that might help some of us figure it out)

I saw a schooner.
Key-Contest-2879@reddit
Everyone told me they saw a Schooner. So I agreed. Of course, I didn’t know wtf a Schooner was when I was a kid; I assumed it was a jumbled mess of lines. 😂
EveryoneChill77777@reddit
Before i knew the term gaskighting, i was convinced my friends were all gaslighting me about what they saw. Never saw anything in these. Not once. But always have an "ooooh yeah there it is..." when they told me what they saw and i got tired of their coaching on how you have to cross your eyes, look past the book and stick my tongue out

Penguins....with top hats...holding bags...boarding a train? I can always see these but this one is a doozy.

The joke of pretending that there were hidden images in these things wasn't funny in the 90s and it still isn't funny now.
Neflite_Art@reddit
ohh I love these :3
Anieya@reddit
It’s a sailboat.
Ok seriously, I see something that kind of looks like a train, mostly horizontal but sloping slightly up and back to the right. A couple pods in the front right, and something in the background top left.
I was never able to do these as a kid. I think sometime in college the ability to control my eyes kicked in.
TollyVonTheDruth@reddit
Looks like a few penguins, an alien, and a cow. What the hell was I supposed to actually see?
man_teats@reddit
If you don't see these, it means one of your eyes is off by a significant margin. Go get your eyes checked out if this is you

Thamnophis660@reddit
Never, I tried and tried and could never see what others claimed to see in these pictures. I'm concerned no one else can either and it was this big experiment in herd mentality.
melanthius@reddit
Sorry but it's actually, truly a skill issue if you can't see these
Plane_Chance863@reddit
If you don't have stereo vision you can't see them. Stereo vision develops at a particular time in life, and if your eyes aren't aligned correctly, for example, your brain doesn't develop the ability for stereo vision/depth perception. My mother has that issue - she had corrective surgery as a child, but too late to have depth perception.
Thamnophis660@reddit
My stereo vision sucks and I'm farsighted in one eye. Maybe that was why I couldn't do these things. I'm honestly not losing sleep over it though, I just missed out on an obsession people had for a few months in like 1997.
Plane_Chance863@reddit
Yeah, that would probably do it.
Mondoweft@reddit
I was given these by an Optomertrist as a child to teach my eyes to work together. I can do them reasonably easily, but I still don't get stereo vision normally without concentrating.
Fun4TheNight218@reddit

No, but ADHD makes it so I can’t concentrate on anything. Especially when there is so much going on like in these pictures. 😂

evolutionxtinct@reddit
Train and a shroom or something but ya I love these always enjoyed them! But your eyes have to be able to support the software upgrade to see the picture.. I would put an email in with support.
jstnpotthoff@reddit
My whole life I thought I was awesome at these things. Loved them and could always see them almost immediately by crossing my eyes. I thought they were cool, but the images were still always hard to make out, and didn't have the wow factor that a lot of people seemed to believe.
Until sometime last year, I saw a post where somebody explained that if you cross your eyes to see them, you're not actually getting the correct effect. The image sinks in instead of popping out--which is exactly what I experienced. They explained you actually have to do the opposite of crossing your eyes...focus further away, not closer, and for the first time in my life I actually saw what they were supposed to look like.
And I felt like a total idiot. But now they look pretty cool.
HabuDoi@reddit
I crossed my eyes and its always popped out as intended, so I don’t think thats correct.
jstnpotthoff@reddit
unless you can cross your eyes further apart rather than closer together, that doesn't make any sense
the images you're seeing look and behave like this?
HabuDoi@reddit
Yes, of course.
jstnpotthoff@reddit
That's not how these magic eye images work.
That's why it doesn't make sense that crossing your eyes works, unless you can cross your eyes outward instead of inward.
HabuDoi@reddit
Well, that’s wrong because I cross my eyes and see the image as intended.
jstnpotthoff@reddit
Sharks are smooth
HabuDoi@reddit
I’m sorry that my eyes work.
Krazylegz1485@reddit
I do the "cross the eyes" method and it works correctly and almost instantly every time. 🤷🏻♂️
jstnpotthoff@reddit
If you're crossing your eyes, you're not seeing the image pop out as intended
Krazylegz1485@reddit
I 100% am... Haha.
jstnpotthoff@reddit
unless you can cross your eyes further apart rather than closer together, that doesn't make any sense
the images you're seeing look and behave like this?
Krazylegz1485@reddit
If you're asking if I see it in three dimensional, then yes. It doesn't rotate like that animation does, but I do for sure see the depth "pop" and can definitely tell what objects are near and far. You can slightly make it rotate like that if you turn your phone slightly back and forth, but I think that animation is somewhat of an exaggeration of what they actually look like.
I personally just pick two things in the repeating background pattern and slowly/slightly cross my eyes until the two merge together. At that point the 3d image pops for me and I can see them every time. I have no idea how much my eyes are physically "crossed" because I of course can't see that myself. I'd be interested to see what it looks like from the outside, tho. Haha.
jstnpotthoff@reddit
It will take some trial and error, but try it the opposite way. Focus on something further away from your phone, and then bring your phone into your line of vision. You might need to move your phone closer or further away, but eventually you should be able to lock onto the image.
I also recommend doing it with a more obvious image than this one at first.
Here's one that I can barely make out what it is when the image is inverted by crossing my eyes. But once I switch my focus to beyond the image, it pops out and is quite obvious.
Krazylegz1485@reddit
It's a rabbit chewing on a leaf.
I'm not trying to argue with you about which way is "better" or not, I'm just saying that I can see it without having to look "past" it. This one you attached I got instantly as well. It just works. I don't know how else to explain it. Haha.
jstnpotthoff@reddit
I'm not asking if you see it, I'm asking you to try to both ways and see the difference.
Krazylegz1485@reddit
I do the "cross the eyes" method and it works correctly and almost instantly every time. 🤷🏻♂️
Just-a-Guy-4242@reddit
I can see these images, but only if they are behind a glass pane. I could never see the ones from books, only the framed ones, I let my eyes focus on the reflection in the glass, instead of the image, and the shape just kind of appears.

It’s not “look at it for long enough”. You have to look at in a certain way. Which is out of focus and very close to your eyes, then start increasing the distance, while forcing your eyes to stay out of focus. Works every time

I always felt like that guy from Mallrats until a few years ago when I acquired a book of magic eye images from that era and I could finally take my time adjusting my vision and relaxing my eyes to get the right angle. It was so exciting to finally cross this off my bucket list.
Mind you, it's not a fantastical image that emerges like some hologram, but rather it feels like you're seeing a hole or negative space in the shape of whatever the subject of the illusion is. It's still pretty cool to see it emerge though.

I never had a particular problem with these. No. When I joined the Army at 20 I found out I was color deficient and every since just assumed this was the reason I could never see the picture as a kid.

Yes. It was easy one you knew the trick.
FinallyKat@reddit
I used to own one that I got as a Christmas gift one year. I think it was two (?) dolphins jumping out of the water. I do remember having friends who never could see anything, though
BjjQuister@reddit
Took me a while in real life. I’ve never seen one via my phone
mondomiketron@reddit
When I moved from Korea to the us in 94 I had a hard time making friends. During lunch I would sit in the library and stared at these books. Got pretty good at adjusting my eyes right away to be able to see them. I was absolutely fascinated by magic eye books.
Agreeable-Chart-5561@reddit
I never had an issue with these
_ficklelilpickle@reddit
Yup, I can still see them just by shifting my focus instead of doing the book/screen to nose and moving it away slowly thing.
This is something like a steam train on the left and something standing in front over on the right. Passenger? They’re standing kind of weird, more like a penguin.
Santos_L_Halper_II@reddit
Not once. I think this whole thing was one big hoax.
EidolonRook@reddit
Never. And I’m almost compulsively drawn to piecing out patterns.
If something’s there, there’s too much “noise” for me to see it.
old_mcfartigan@reddit
For practice draw two identical dots on a single page side by side an inch apart then if you don’t focus exactly on them but past them you’ll see four dots, two with each eye. Kind of like if you hold your finger up at arm’s length and focus on the opposite wall you’ll see two fingers, one with each eye. The further you look past the dots the further apart the two pairs will be but at the exact right distance the left dot for your right eye will exactly align with the right dot for your left eye and it’ll kind of “snap” into place and you’ll see only three dots.
You can do this with any repeating pattern, for example peg board or wrapping paper. The magic eye might look like a bunch of random gibberish but it’s actually a repeating pattern and if you get the left eye pattern and the right eye pattern to overlap they’ll just snap into place and then you’ll see the image

I see a big headed alien standing on the rear end of a horse, with a giant mushroom walking something on a leash…..
AdoptedBySmurfs@reddit
For sure, had multiple books. And the one above kind of looks like a bulldozer. It’s been 30 years so I’m a little rusty.
Appropriate-Food1757@reddit
Yeah
chargoggagog@reddit
Before I look at the comments: I see a relief, there is a foreground and a background. Almost looks like a diorama, the bottom slopes toward me and the background is flat. There appears to be a cutout of something that looks like maybe a train with a large bottle on the right side.
myrdraal2001@reddit
I hated these things because I didn't have the patience to sit there and cross my eyes long enough to hallucinate seeing anything. They were EVERYWHERE and I just couldn't see what made them so ever present. Malls, bookstores, Spencer Gifts, Suncoast, music stores or anywhere that had posters at all.

I have a really hard time getting the picture to come forward on a phone screen, but the ones in books have always been easy for me.
ExternalGiraffe9631@reddit
Yes, I could see them instantly when I was younger. Turns out untreated childhood astigmatism was the Magic Eye.

I love Magic eyes! I used to have books of them and a calendar one year. I could always see the pictures.
The_OtherGuy_99@reddit
Somebody posted a gif on here awhile that made it so I could finally see one.
I was massively underwhelmed.
MajesticLow@reddit
Honestly, for the first time as of reading this post I was able to see an image in the 3D art. All other times I could not. This is awesome 🤯🤯🤯🤯
Allrojin@reddit
Yes, it's a sailboat.
joecarter93@reddit
I used to be able to see them no problem as as kid. Now as an adult I can’t see them for the life of me.
akadebso@reddit
Yeah but it took crossing my eyes or something lol. I hated it back in the day.
melanthius@reddit
It's the opposite of crossing your eyes
The_OtherGuy_99@reddit
Walleyed?
akadebso@reddit
If I had to describe it it would be like crossing your eyes but then slowly letting them uncross or something. I had to do that to have a chance at seeing whatever is in a 3D image. Between that and maybe holding the image close and then slowly moving my face away from the image. It’s been decades at this point so I might be a little off in describing how to view them but yeah it took way too much of an effort and I didn’t like it. This thread took me back though. :)

Yes. I see the outlines when I cross my eyes and slowly uncross them a bit. I often don't know what it is though.

I've got a hues/saturation color-blindness defect. It's probably anomalous-trichromacy, but there are 27 or more different types. I think that has been my fault for never "seeing it"... if there ever was something to see.
QuoVadimusDana@reddit
Yep, I loved them!
Kittycorgo@reddit
Literally never lmao
Alclis@reddit
I was always able to achieve the 3D perspective, but without the context of color or shades, it almost always just looked like 3D blobs and shapes to me.
Klutzy-Delivery-5792@reddit
I tried and tried and tried. It turns out if you're farsighted you have trouble seeing them, even more so if you have a lazy eye. Yeah, I was the kid with the coke bottle glasses in grade school.
singleguy79@reddit
I never saw shit.
Express-Cow190@reddit
I tried so hard to see these but never could
needsmorequeso@reddit
These things have always made me feel like Lisa in that episode of The Simpsons where all the other kids get the brain teaser and she worries she is doomed to a life of idiocy.
ZzzSleep@reddit
Yeah, it’s just a matter of crossing your eyes the right way. Then you’ll see the 3D image pop. For me at least it was still hard to tell what the image was a lot of the time, especially if it was a complicated image because you’ll see the impression of it against the busy pattern.
Not interested in crossing my eyes anymore so probably won’t see one again haha
Rumbananas@reddit
They’re not hard. Cross your eyes until adjacent patterns match. It’s penguins with a train in the background.
Bombtek504@reddit
What you need is a fatty-boom-batty blunt! And I guarantee you'll be seeing a sailboat, an ocean, and maybe even some of those big-tittied mermaids doing some of that lesbian shit! Look at me, look at me, you sloppy bitch!

Pro tip: crossing your eyes gives you the inverse image on these.
It also makes solving the “find the difference between these images” game SUPER easy. If people don’t know the trick they legit think you’re a magician.
Sleepy_cheetah@reddit
I didn't have the patience. My mind can't settle down long enough to stare at those things. But someone made a fortune off of them.
katie_cat_eyes@reddit
I always could but it’s harder when it’s a digital file. In the books we had, those were easy for me but put it on a computer, and I can barely see it.
digitaljedi42@reddit
I can't see the flat image anymore. I think I trained on these too much as a kid and now the 3d image just pops out immediately.
Truth_Seeker963@reddit
Maybe a train with trees in the foreground? I don’t see a boat. This one is annoying with the different colours and weird shapes.
