Anyone seen the Amazon Collective Soul commercial? I feel assaulted (“No, That’s MY dad! And he’s not listing to that!”)

Song?
Addicted-2Diving@reddit
Collective soul is the band and the song title is “Shine”
Addicted-2Diving@reddit
I just saw it. Great song
Eaglepursuit@reddit
It is a very confusing commercial
xtlhogciao@reddit (OP)
All I got out of it was “is this (the dad) how they see us now? Erroneous! Erroneous!”…although I might be listening to that. That’s accurate.
Eaglepursuit@reddit
That "dad" is dressing like a teen/20-something would have in the early 1980s, but the music is late 90s. It's a weird composite of Xer and Millennial. I actually thought the girl was listening to the music at first.
Moxie_Stardust@reddit
Collective Soul's "Shine" was a hit single in 1994, album was released in 1993 😊
lydatl@reddit
well now i have and i sure can't unsee it, thanks i hate it
and yeah that dude is listening to halen at best. i assume the 23 year old marketer just picked the cheapest licensing fee on the dad rock playlist.
NachoNachoDan@reddit
I refuse to believe that Collective Soul is the cheapest thing you can find from the 90s to license. I would’ve really thought that there’s some way more forgettable music from 1993

eh it's gotta be something memorable enough for recognition, since i figure the actual target is "don't embarrass your newly grown children" x-ish dads. tbf i'm a long time hater since so many better acts from georgia deserved all those radio minutes these jokers got.

I bet you could get Possum Kingdom pretty cheap.

So help me, Jesus.

Have you been to a collective soul concert recently? Last one I went to was in a 100 seat venue that was half filled. In 2009. I doubt they have made a comeback since then.
JustinGJ@reddit
I actually just saw them within the last month with "smashmouth", it was an outdoor venue and there was actually a ton of people there. Good concert but they're weird dudes.
FoppyDidNothingWrong@reddit
She's dressed more like the 90s than he is 💀
GinchAnon@reddit
apparently 90s is fashionable nowadays with the youths.
AmputeeHandModel@reddit
Someone doesn't remember what 1991 was like.

80s holdovers
throwawayfromPA1701@reddit
Why would you make us suffer thru this
iknowiknowwhereiam@reddit
Boomers saw us as teens when we were in our 30s and now zoomers see us as in our 60s when we are in our 40s
Skate_faced@reddit
They aged us very poorly here.
Like yeah tons of grey hair, I wouldn't turn Shine off, but not a voluntary play, gotta do the walking.... fuck yeah, we're old.
Not the boomer rendition of old up there though.
CarriePage@reddit
I think the actor playing the dad is Kevin Farley (Chris’s brother who was also in the fake boy band 2Gether) and he’s 60. Not 100% sure it’s him but looks like him.
Dream-Ambassador@reddit
Dolly covered that song and it’s pretty great
Traditional_Entry183@reddit
I think the dad is about 60, so more core Gen X than us.
Buddyblue21@reddit
The outfit: no, but the actor might not be too far off in age from the band

MY buddies dad, rocked this song, but thought the lyric "Heaven let your light shine down", were "Heavy Metal action time".
Tylerdurden389@reddit
How about "Heaven let your CAT shinedown"?

Gen X/ Xennial / Millenials:
None of these generations are wearing that boomer outfit
NachoNachoDan@reddit
No you’re supposed to take away from this that it is funny and clever to shame a middle-aged man for his exercise clothing choices but not a 20 something-year-old college girl.
mysocalledmayhem@reddit
Admittedly, I’m torn on the shaming of the youth because they are half attempting to emulate the 90s while sneakily just using it as an excuse to wear oddly shaped denim BUT ALWAYS A BARE MIDRIFF. WITHOUT FAIL, and zero deviation in the form of personalized style.
Yet I’m firmly in the shaking my fist at a cloud while yelling at it to get off my lawn era of absolutely shaming everyone. At least it’s equal opportunity hating, I suppose.
NachoNachoDan@reddit
I’m fine with either shaming everyone or shaming no one. Matter of fact there’s a lot of stupid on the Internet that could benefit from some good old fashioned bullying.
mysocalledmayhem@reddit
The ironic thing is: Gen Z & Alpha cannot afford anything and are using the parents accounts to order Amazon
…while never seeing it on a credit statement of their own, but they are still the target demographic for this advertisement.
Yet I still hit up my Dad for money the other day too. And he WAS dressed like that.
NachoNachoDan@reddit
Well I think we can all say we’re a bit more gracious than we were in our early twenties (or at least I hope so!)
iliveonramen@reddit
I’ve never seen someone from our age group wear shorts like that
EvilLeprechaun29@reddit
While it’s disturbing to hear songs I grew up with as the backdrop for “old guy” stuff in commercials, ain’t nothing gonna hit me like hearing The World I Know being played at CVS.
AmputeeHandModel@reddit
or Nirvana at the grocery store.
Funkopedia@reddit
They just picked decades out of a hat for this
Practical_Agent2828@reddit
Omg I just saw this and thought the same thing!!!!
theguineapigssong@reddit
That running form is painful to watch.
