I can't remember exactly now, wasn't there a German prototype or design for a Sten gun in 7.92 kurz? Is that a thing, or what is it called exactly?

Perhaps what you're referring to is the Wimmersperg Spz.
It was designed to use parts from the Sten and the StG 44, but no prototypes were made during the war.
Although, some replicas have been made.

Was that an open bolt gun?
Popular_Mushroom_349@reddit
I believe so.
Gas piston operated. And a bolt camming surface similar to the AR-15
shark_aziz@reddit
I can't find any information besides it being gas-operated, but if I had to guess, maybe it's open bolt.

They copied the Sten in 9mm (Gerät Potsdam). Don't quite see why they would copy a Sten gun in 7.92 Kurz when they already had the StG?
Away_Comparison_8810@reddit (OP)
Why did they produce the horrible bolt action and semi-automatic rifles VG-2 and VG1-5? Because more than half a year before the end of the war, the number of newly produced weapons was lower than the monthly needs for regular units alone, let alone the plan to arm a large part of the civilian population in the last defense of the Reich.
Great_White_Sharky@reddit
They already have a cheap semi auto 8mm Kurz rifle. They already have Sten Guns. Why make shitty Sten Guns?
Away_Comparison_8810@reddit (OP)
That is why it was probably only testing weapon, 7,92 STEN woud be still faster to produce than STG, VG.

Cost cutting and easier to manufacture
Great_White_Sharky@reddit
How would making a new Sten in an unsuitable cartridge be easier to manufacture than a regular Sten for which the production ahs already been set up?
Panthean@reddit
Wouldn't 7.92 kurz be too powerful for a blowback design?
Away_Comparison_8810@reddit (OP)
Woud, but with last ditch weapons, where shooter will survive 1-4 mags it probably dont matter that much.

Can't really make a Sten in 8mm Kurz, even if it's a weak intermediate cartridge it's too powerful for simple blowback (gas buffered blowback yes).
Tricky-Budget5420@reddit
That was the last ditch rifle called Gustloff VG, the made several models. For a Sten that caliber would be too much energy
