BEWARE Paws and Claws Holistic Vet

Beware of this, Vet!! He did not even check my dogs heart. He just took him in the back and brushed his hair. I also asked him to cut his toenails, and they did not cut his toenails, but they charged me for it. This guy is not a real vet. He does not care about your dogs. He just wants your money. I took my dog there about eight years ago and the same thing he did not tell me anything that I did not already know he did not help me. This guy is a scam.

Wanted to repost this to for clarity:
TEXAS DOES NOT HAVE RABIES VACCINE EXEMPTION POLICY. Upon further research... I found the info I posted, about medical exemptions, earlier in this thread to not be accurate. The only exemption I read in Texas law is possibly a dog coming from another state, which does have an exemption rule, and then there is a limited time before Texas requires the vaccine. If someone can find the exemption policy in writing, please post it - I always heard there was one, but can't find it to be valid for Texas. This is the source of what appears to be current Texas law:

Texas legislates pets like commodities, and is aggressive about not catering for edge cases in general.
This is disappointing but unsurprising.
friendlysoviet@reddit
Government laws prioritizing the public health over that of animals? Sounds like a great law to me.
Intelligent_Loan2058@reddit
I find most "holistic" vets are scams.

You’re right and I should’ve known better but my dog is 19 and the other Vet wanted me to give him a rabies shot! I’m so livid right now
AnarkittenSurprise@reddit
The hate you are getting here is wild. Under no circumstances should your dog be getting a rabies shot.
tanjtanjtanj@reddit
Why would you leave your old vet over that? Dogs are REQUIRED by law to get the rabies shot in the city of Plano.
Silent_Corner2870@reddit (OP)
I don’t live in Plano and I am not gonna give my dog that is 128 in dog years a shot that’s got immune issues!!
Brilliant-Concern620@reddit
Man animal anti vaxxers was not on my 2025 bingo card.
JustJamieJam@reddit
You could have spoken to your vet about getting a rabies vaccine exemption form, they exist
Realistic-Pay-6931@reddit
From what I researched - Texas is not a state that offers an exemption. If you have a source on this, please let me know. I always thought this was the case myself, but can't find it in Texas law.
gremlinowl@reddit
Unfortunately it's a Texas state law requirement Rabies Control
I understand how you feel about your dog, but could you ask your vet for other options? I'm not sure if they make a different vaccine for older pets or not
Realistic-Pay-6931@reddit
So did you at least get a medical waiver from Paws and Claws for the rabies vaccine?
Realistic-Pay-6931@reddit
Not quite true. Healthy dogs are required by TEXAS STATE law to get a rabies vaccination - 1 or 3 year is recognized and then boosters.
Texas allows limited exemptions for dogs deemed medically unfit to receive the vaccine. Under Texas Administrative Code Title 25, Part 1, Chapter 169, Rule 169.31, a licensed veterinarian may issue a medical exemption if vaccination poses a significant health risk due to a pre-existing condition. Conditions such as severe allergic reactions, immune-mediated diseases, or chronic illnesses may qualify. The veterinarian must document the exemption in writing and provide the owner with a signed waiver.
Medical waivers are typically valid for one year, after which the dog must be reevaluated. Some local jurisdictions impose additional restrictions on exempted dogs, such as requiring them to remain on the owner’s property or limiting public interactions. Owners may also need to present exemption documentation upon request by health authorities or law enforcement.

Weird. Just get the rabies shot
Realistic-Pay-6931@reddit
I find most traditional vets want to pump my dog full of chemicals he doesn't need.
Silent_Corner2870@reddit (OP)
If you guys can, please help me put the word out. I would really appreciate it like I said I was hoping karma would get him, but after this, I’m so livid. I’m also gonna report him to the veterinarian board.

Why would you go back if you weren't pleased 8 years ago? His bio is enough of a turnoff now... and especially this part "Dr. Shawn has also developed a number of unique holistic treatments, not available elsewhere, for a variety of diseases. Using a holistic and functional medicine approach, Dr. Shawn is able to help many patients who have not been properly diagnosed and treated by conventional medicine and whom have received a guarded prognosis. This unique approach allows him to offer hope even for those cases which are deemed hopeless by other doctors."

I’m obviously an idiot!
dogsop@reddit
You said it, I didn't.
Beginning-Whereas-72@reddit
Your dog needs a rabies shot!
Independent-Math-914@reddit
What did you come in for?
dogsop@reddit
Holistic in the name should have been your clue.
Realistic-Pay-6931@reddit
There are good holistic vets, but you have to do some extensive research to find them.
Realistic-Pay-6931@reddit
downvoted. doesn't surprise me as most people don't take the time to research alternative vet care.
Jedi71@reddit
Holistic vet? Ha.
Realistic-Pay-6931@reddit
There are good holistic vets, but not Paws and Claws. I found he was more interested in accumulating information from actual holistic vets and then compiling it into a book he could author. Had the same experience as you there, only about 20 years ago and have never been back.
Silent_Corner2870@reddit (OP)
You know, I was hoping that it would’ve been better but the fact that he didn’t even check his heart so bad
Realistic-Pay-6931@reddit
They used to give you a checklist of all that he examined (eyes, ears, heart, feet, skin, teeth, gums, etc.). When we went, Neither my dog or I left the room and the vet spent only a few minutes with us. After he left, the tech gave me a paper with all the items checked on it. I asked "When did he do all this?" and their answer was "he's really fast". So fast I didn't see him touch my dog?
BeekeeperZero@reddit
Yeah holistic usually means exactly that type of service. I've used them not because of my beliefs but just to try anything I could to help my dog. If you need vet recommendations on Plano or Richardson let me know.
