Why aren't business owners held accountable for hiring illegal immigrants? Seems like politicians basically just turned a blind eye on slave labor for the last 30 years........

Seems like people should go to jail for essentially using slave labor.
Did America really just allow it to go on and turn a blind eye to illegal immigration because it benefitted the economy? Or am I reading the situation wrong?

A lot of those jobs they fill…..Americans don’t want to do or want too much money because of unions.
HayatoKongo@reddit
It's fundamentally anti-capitalist to use slave labor as a subversion against paying a market wage. Even without unions, McDonald's had to raise their pay to around $20/hr in some areas back in 2020-2021. That's not due to unions striking, or a minimum wage increase, it was entirely natural since they could not find anyone to hire for less than that. There are very few, if any, jobs that Americans would not be willing to due for the right price.
AlphaTangoFoxtrt@reddit
Is it truly a "market wage" if the government bans you from hiring someone born on the "wrong" shore of a river?
Free Markets means labor markets too. I should be able to hire whomever I want assuming they are able to consent to a business contract, with no need to ask the government for permission.

Dude, the hyperbole is not helpful. Slave labor is not the same as people willingly doing a job in exchange for money.
EskimoPrisoner@reddit
But you see, it’s slave labor if you allow immigrants to willingly do them for pay they agree to.

Legally, it needs to be proved that the employer 'knowingly' hired someone who had no legal standing to be here. Which is fairly difficult.
b2reddit1234@reddit (OP)
As an employer wouldnt you know? Like wouldn't you need to see proof of citizenship before hiring? Like an ID or something
AlphaTangoFoxtrt@reddit
Fake IDs and Stolen SSNs happen all the time.

Here we go again with the nativist framing. Broad legalization and work permits so such things can be tracked and contracts can be enforced. Not restrictionism.

Depends on the state. In my state it is a misdemeanor to hire a known illegal. The meat packing plants got caught quite a bit the first few years.
AceWall0@reddit
I'm sorry, what sub am I on?
What do you mean "slave labor"? Send someone to jail because they are giving people a job that they both agreed upon??
MaverickNORCAL@reddit
Because they own the politicians.
b2reddit1234@reddit (OP)
Who is they?
Pojomofo@reddit
I’ve been asking this for years. They never get brought up but are absolutely a huge portion of the problem.
CCWaterBug@reddit
In my experience it's brought up every time...
b2reddit1234@reddit (OP)
Literally never get brought up.
ImportantPost6401@reddit
Sally in HR checked all boxes, collected all the paperwork, scanned all documents. Yeah, send the owner to jail.
bobbabson@reddit
Because then they'd have to arrest a significant part of the tax base, and like 70% of the food production owners (primarily the big players)
MadlockFreak@reddit
Yeah and then they can just foreclose the land to sell to Big Farm corps like they intended from the beginning, just with less damage.
Savagecash@reddit
The thing is it is big farm Corp hiring the illegas
TRichard3814@reddit
Not only them
b1n4ry01@reddit
I'm with ya. Pain in the butt and I hope they do start being held accountable.
