What’s the best ground school?

I already have my CPL (rotary) but I’m about to start training for my fixed wing rating. There’s some things from flight school that I haven’t looked at in a long time and I’m wondering what the general consensus is for the best online ground school course. I definitely need the refresher and I’m stressed that I’ve probably forgotten everything !

I’ve always recommended Part Time Pilot and still do! I totally felt you when you said you needed a refresher because I’m the same way! I keep going back to the lessons whenever I need one, thanks to the lifetime access.

You can certainly save your money and do the PHAK, Free YouTube, etc. route but if you want the structure of a comprehensive ground school, want to be able to get questions answered, want the quizzes, practice tests, flash cards, etc. then an online ground school is a good option and why they exist! Airspace and weather out of the PHAK. That’s usually the weakness for RW guys converting to FW. Aerodynamics maybe, but usually rotor guys are pretty solid on that.

With solid commercial rotary experience, I would say save your money and just download the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge and Airplane Flying Handbook pdf’s for free.
The transition to fixed wing is covered by FAR §61.63(b) as you’re adding a new category to your existing pilot certificate.
§61.63 Additional aircraft ratings (other than for ratings at the airline transport pilot certification level).
(a) General. For an additional aircraft rating on a pilot certificate, other than for an airline transport pilot certificate, a person must meet the requirements of this section appropriate to the additional aircraft rating sought.
(b) Additional aircraft category rating. A person who applies to add a category rating to a pilot certificate:
(1) Must complete the training and have the applicable aeronautical experience.
(2) Must have a logbook or training record endorsement from an authorized instructor attesting that the person was found competent in the appropriate aeronautical knowledge areas and proficient in the appropriate areas of operation.
(3) Must pass the practical test.
(4) Need not take an additional knowledge test, provided the applicant holds an airplane, rotorcraft, powered-lift, weight-shift-control aircraft, powered parachute, or airship rating at that pilot certificate level.
Number 4 is answering your ground school question. You don’t need a ground school because you’re not required to pass a knowledge test.
And if you were to review the ACS for commercial pilot airplane, I bet you already know 80-90% of the oral exam questions.
A good CFI will cover 1 & 2 with you to make you ready for the practical test. This includes building a curriculum that gives you credit under 61.129 for your rotorcraft time.
Finally regarding your solo requirements, §61.31(d)(2) will authorize you appropriately once you have demonstrated you’re ready for solo flight.
