What are reasonable themes for primary school discos?

I've recently taken on running a school disco three times a year with the current themes: Oct = neon/glow, Feb = neon/glow, May = summer festival (outside)
It annoys me that Oct and Feb are identical so I'd like to change one of them.
Halloween seems fairly obvious for Oct but I was cautioned against doing that because costumes can get too hot in the school hall. That discussion was between the previous headteacher and the previous disco lead so I'm not sure if this is accurate or if things have changed. I wouldn't mandate costumes but also not sure if the theme would put off some cultures from attending and the point is to get as many attendees as possible to raise money for the school.
Chinese New Year is close to the Feb disco so wondered if that could be a possibility, but as it's outside of my own culture I'm not sure what's appropriate and don't want to offend anyone. We do have a sizable Chinese population at our school and it'd be nice for them to be more represented in the PTA events as we already cover most of the big UK cultures throughout the year.
Please throw your ideas at me! Thank you

Go rogue and do a bonfire party in October (or just make that the theme)

Wish I could! I love a bonfire!

My son’s school have a Halloween one in Oct, a Christmas one in Dec and an Easter one March/Apr, then a Summer Fayre in Jul time. Costumes are optional. No one bats an eye if someone doesn’t dress up. The school has multiple nationalities and cultured pupils and the attendance is always fairly high.

As a parent, I’m always grateful for non-Halloween themed stuff at this time of year. I’m not offended by it and have no issue with anyone celebrating it but our family doesn’t really and it’s just nice to have a few options that are different. There’s enough Halloween stuff around that no one who wants it is short of of things to do already.
I think the Chinese New Year one could be a nice one if you use it as a way to celebrate inclusivity. If the school has some Chinese families, ask them for their input and suggestions on how it could be done. I’ve been a primary teacher and I had a lovely parent come in once to give our kids a talk on Chinese New Year. She showed them photos of their celebrations, let them try on some traditional outfits her kids had worn for previous years, did some water painting of Chinese writing characters with them and we made red envelopes. Maybe you could precede the disco with some learning in school about it so it would be clear that you’re appreciating and celebrating their culture in a respectful way.

It's a party, mate. As long as you don't have the kids paint their faces yellow I doubt anyone is gonna be offended.

Winter wonderland theme for Feb could work. Easy to take inspiration from the frozen franchise without copying directly.

My daughter's school has an 'autumn disco' in the next couple of weeks, in the knowledge that many kids will come in Halloween gear.

I'm leaning towards implying Halloween friendly but also keeping it neon/glow. It's too late for this year as the posters are already up around the school but next year I'll start tweaking the format

We (PTA) had a CNY one but fitting into a school-wide week of CNY activities and learning. The hall was decorated with the artwork and poems they had been doing, and the day of the disco was a "wear red" own clothes day with special lunch.
It was very well attended (around ¾ of the children). Going earlier, rather than being too close to half term, meant more volunteers were willing and available.

This sounds very well coordinated! Some very good ideas here

For October, absolutely do Halloween, with a caution about overheating. Or just something about Bright! Or Color!

Depends on the school my daughters was church of England and would not do any Halloween events. Maybe harvest for October? Diwali is also October maybe festival of lights?
piggycatnugget@reddit (OP)
They have a Diwali fayre the week beforehand already. It's not CofE school so can't see there being a religious reason for refusal of Halloween.
I might float the idea for making Oct a neon/glow Halloween theme next year and see if anyone kicks up a fuss.

David Foster Wallace themed disco. He was born in Feb so it all lines up.

It's a terrible solution for the OP but a great answer. Bandanas for everyone!

^(What is this?)

Thinking about Chinese New Year, what if you made the February theme "Red"?
piggycatnugget@reddit (OP)
This is brilliant! The school colour is red so it fits so well! Thank you!
Electronic-Tip3228@reddit
That’s a great idea, a pop of colour for the grey months
peppermint_aero@reddit
Also fits with Valentine's if that's something the school thinks is appropriate
Western_Sort501@reddit
My daughters February disco was always a Valentine's disco
First-Lengthiness-16@reddit
Do they all need a theme? I was happy with some hair gel, light up trainers, chewing gum and £2 in my pocket.
Themed discos can put financial pressure on the poorer families
If you need one though think
Space, Under the sea, PJ party Disney/Fairy Tale Animals Pirates.

It's more because 2 discos are identical that I'd like to make them different somehow so it doesn't get samey for the kids. The numbers for the Feb disco drops compared to the other 2 and wondered if giving it something new would help bump it up again. The summer one is notably different and the most popular. I'm open to ideas aside from themes

Halloween, and let people deal with it.
Key_Illustrator_9077@reddit
Halloween= put off some cultures.
Chinese New Year = offend everyone.
Sounds like you're overthinking it. Go with Halloween. If the kids can't learn to take stuff off if they are getting too hot it's on them. You can't please everyone, if people are going to swerve Halloween, I can't imagine basing it on other countries NY is going to bring in the money.

Pick a decade and theme the music? 90s etc
