Your personal home life must really sucks to even wanna stay out tht long…and if you gotta stay out tht long to make money, then you need to rethink your job options,,and if you say you just love driving, then you might need to start your own company so you can really see the financial benefits of working tht hard…. I don’t know how long you been trucking, but I’m sure long enough to know tht all you get for working hard is your check and a free hot dog and soda on driver appreciation day… there not gonna never be happy when you’re home because they don’t make no money… I laugh when i here drivers say they worked there butts off and still get treated like crap …. The trucking industry is the devil’s playground
ursisterstoy@reddit
I usually stay out 18 days and go home for 3. Sometimes I want to just stay home longer but once on the road I don’t really get burnt out until week 5. I wouldn’t agree to being out for 9 months straight unless I was single without children and I wanted to keep it that way until I had a nice amount saved up. Even if driving isn’t the best paying you can definitely save a lot of money if you don’t have an apartment, a car, a significant other, any children, and your monthly bills are your cell phone and your food. Stack up the money when you’re young, have a life when you’re done. Don’t expect this staying out for 9 months will keep you married if you were married before you left. Don’t expect your children to remember who you are if they’re less than 5 years old. Fuck that shit unless you’re single. Perhaps you’re 21 years old and by the time you’re 25 you’ve met someone on the road, another driver, then perhaps you can switch to teams and then when you’re having children one or both of you needs to be home for them. Maybe if you saved enough money you can work opposite shifts Monday-Friday and everyone home on the weekends. Make something work. You worked 9 months without going home because you wanted to. Don’t expect them to understand that now you want to be home. You could easily have a month of home time or more for how long you were gone but what is “home” at that point? Your job?
UrbanIronPoet@reddit (OP)
I have a house, and I'm single but have children I did this to help my family who's been going through some shit I can't go to deep on on here
ursisterstoy@reddit
I’d focus on your kids. Depending on how old they are 2-3 weeks at a time if you stay home 3-4 days might be fine. Nine months is not fine. They’re more important than the adults you’re trying to help.
Odd-Improvement-2135@reddit
Your kids deserve better and so do you. The adults in your life that you're trying to rescue will never change because they know you will bail them out. There are some great audiobooks out there on codependency. Might be helpful to listen to one.

I think they know that because my driver manager isn't tripping he's worried about the higher ups.
Down2EatPossum@reddit
I'm a driver manager, if yours is worth anything then even if the higher ups want to throw a stink about it, you won't hear of it.
UrbanIronPoet@reddit (OP)
I believe so also but I could low key tell he was irritated with me this morning...
Down2EatPossum@reddit
Take it in stride, if your company doesnt recognize the hustle and won't cut you some slack for some deserved home time then do yourself and your family a favor and find another one to drive for.

Tell them to go suck your hairy nut sack technically you accumulated if you work nine months straight and didn’t take any home time and it’s one day per week off, which is the usual for most trucking companies. That means you accumulated 36 days and you only took 10 off would mean 26 days so you could take out two more weeks and still be good. Tell them to go fuck themselves.
ShaggyAssassin@reddit
Man shit, ik Pam Transport had me driving 5 for 5, 5 weeks out for 5 days home, only getting paid $400 a week was a fucking joke
Chieftjs@reddit
Why would you work for these people?
UrbanIronPoet@reddit (OP)
Got me feeling like Andy off Shawshank redemption now...I definitely have a plan.

You should’ve been executing this plan at 2 months out/no home time 😂😂. You gave your old lady enough time to have a baby. Fuck the people you work for and stand up for yourself, bud.

Don't have an o lady and the would of shouldve don't matter at this point. I came here to see everyone's opinion that's all was a bit frustrated this morning
Peterbiltpiper@reddit
9 mos out! That’s a lot buddy. Any other drivers at your company operate that way also? Not reasonable for them to expect more from you no.

You should be frustrated. If you asked for 18 days of your home time they should have been like yep sure, 10-4. You've earned it

Naw, just go to the DMV apply for endorsement, take the test pass it, take it to TSA get fingerprinted, get approved by homeland security then take credentials back to DMV to receive endorsement but usually takes about 30-90 days last I remember sometimes quicker because I had my hazmat 2 or 3 times in my career

Any company that would let you do 9 straight don’t gaf about you I’m going to a hard running company and even they were like after a while we’ll MAKE you take time off lol.
UrbanIronPoet@reddit (OP)
Agreed but I'm an honest man there's been plenty of opportunities to take off but my mission is my family so I sacrificed, my thing was when I finally took it the amount of complaints passively was irritating me and that I get too because I know the game but I just wanted to see what other drivers thought about this
OkSeaworthiness251@reddit
If you show people you’ll do certain things that’ll become the status quo. I remember running with Steven’s I’d do 3 months try to get a week off and by Day 5 they were calling me asking to cover a run or like your company did, start getting huffy saying the truck can’t sit that long and they would send someone to grab it. Also as my Dad told me you can lose your family chasing a dollar, so please keep that all in mind. I run like I do because I don’t have a family yet if I did have a family wild dogs couldn’t keep me from the house. Plenty of local and regional options Craigslist is where I’ve gotten all my trucking jobs and before I was a trucker where I got my Chef jobs, I swear by it.
UrbanIronPoet@reddit (OP)
Appreciate it boss

BuildingHonest631@reddit
Our drivers are only required to work 3 weeks out in a month. Guaranteed 7 days off in a row. We have a few teams that will do 1-2 months out and take 14 - 21 days straight. If they go over 30 we have to rehire. They are paid for work time as well as downtime as long as they are out. Not just for loads.
Our drivers are well taken care of and because of this, they're loyal and willing to go above and beyond. This is a smaller company, 30 trucks, however. The previous company I worked for had 110 trucks with 250 drivers. They paid low and consistently found reasons to dock pay and terminate. They would suspend them for a week at a time for minor infractions (ie. Calling out sick with a Dr note). They had more drivers than trucks but held it against anyone needing or wanting time off.
All this to say, stop doing them a favor for BS in return. You make the money for them and need to be acknowledged and treated with respect for not sleeping in your own bed for 9 effing months.
Federal-Service-4949@reddit
This is why I left the industry. Companies think they are GIVING you home time. No. You earn and deserve it. OTR changed so much in the last 5 years and not for the good. I’m so happy to be home.

DAMN i just did 3 months out with no home time I thought i was a hard runner. But yeah my company did me the same way. I just asked for 3 days. I told my dispatch you can either get me a load to the house or I’m going to house. Whats it gonna be? And this was after i unloaded the night before sat at the receiver for a 10 hr then woke up at 8am still had no new load. Drove to a tank wash 1hr 30min and by 2:30pm still didn’t have a new load. This was friday btw they were gonna be off till Monday. And i told my dispatch on Tuesday i was burnt out and needed home time. They got me a clean empty and i drove to the house.

Doesn't matter how long you are on the road dispatchers will always try to manipulate you into staying on the road and taking no home time. If you want home time take it. Doesn't actually matter they won't fire you for it. They'll just act like they're going to.
UrbanIronPoet@reddit (OP)
Facts I'm not in disagreement
Ok_Bug_6470@reddit
They get production bonuses and or their supervisors get production bonuses. You’re killing that for them. It’s a truck that’s not being used to make money for almost two weeks and it throws all of their numbers into chaos. It’s legit what you’re doing but there’s someone in the chain that’s not getting that new set of clubs before the office tournament now and they’re taking it out on you.
UrbanIronPoet@reddit (OP)

MCryptoWars@reddit
9 months straight without coming home👀? Either you are ready to retire or chose to be out on the road for that long. Doesn’t make any sense unless it’s a special type of contract such as an Ice Road Trucker contract or something.

Socketz11@reddit
Did you ask for any time off? Or did you choose to stay out this long? I understand how you most definitely earned at least 25 days off after staying out that long, but from the company perspective, equipment sitting idle for extended periods of time becomes a vacuum for money. You need to find a balance and they need to start accepting it. It used to be 3/1, but lately since rates are such shit the norm is now 4wk/1wk. You need to have them agree to your preffered hometime and respect it.
UrbanIronPoet@reddit (OP)
I have options but a family member was in a bad situation so I sacrificed myself to make sure they were good. This is why I stayed out like this
Socketz11@reddit

StonedTrucker@reddit
If the load is delivered on time then what do they have to complain about? I'll drive 2 hours home just to sleep in my own bed.
Sounds to me like they either want complete and total control over you or they get pissed about a small amount of extra fuel usage. Either way they sound terrible to work for. Especially after 9 months of straight working
PShubbs91@reddit
They are probably like my company. The delivery appointment could be 7:00 - 14:00. I'll get it delivered early in that window. I've still had people say "You need to deliver it when we need it delivered" which really means you need to drive till like 3 in the morning and sleep at the delivery location and unload at 7 because I don't want to do my damn job and find you a load a few hours after than that.

Your dispatchers have measurable productivity targets and they’re given a score like a video game. A higher score means they receive praise, promotions and pay. They don’t appreciate your hard work and they’re not mad at you. They’re trying to get more points by keeping the truck moving.
