NZ to USA 🇺🇸

Anyone made the hop over from NZ to USA to fly at the airlines? How’d you go about the process? Any tips/words of advice? For reference, I started flight training in my late 20s and my wife is an American citizen. Wanting to fly in the States and have a bit of time until graduation but want to get ahead of it. Any suggestions?

Do as much training here as you can. The standard here is pathetically weak compared to New Zealand. It’s harder to get a CAA PPL than become an FAA CFI.

You’ll be able to get a “piggyback” Private issued under FAR 61.75 to get started.Â
Instrument - 15 hours dual, written, practical test.Â
Commercial - essentially the same.
Multi add on when ready.Â
Flight Instructor - but there’s a massive surplus and employed instructors are not leaving, so few vacancies.
As a non-citizen TSA still applies, but any school is ok provided they are willing to do the paperwork. As a permanent resident no flight training visa is required.
Your hours will count. Private converts. You’ll do everything else like anyone else would.Â
“1,500” is a milestone but no longer an employment threshold.Â

Well depends on what certificates and ratings you have on hand. If you only have a PPL, then it might be worth while pausing until you can get stateside. If your ATPL with commercial experience, than you might be able to apply straight to the airlines, and then there is everything in between.

He did it ya'll. He got on Tinder and did it. So proud!
You'll need to start with permanent residency via your wife. During that process, you can start converting your licenses/taking exams as required. That part will depend on your current licenses and experience level.
