What is a good gift for first time dads?

Need to give a gift and cannot for the life of me figure out what to give. So any dads want to help out?

What about a sort of baby reference book?
This is kinda a gift for both in that imho some (only some, not all) dads can be a little nervous to look after baby alone. And some (only some, not all) mums are nervous to let the baby out of her sight. So if he could feel confident in caring for baby, they get to bond and mom could get some rest, alone time, etc. and thus a happier family all around.
And beer, of course.

Honestly I gave my sister a 500 bulk box of wet wipes packs when she had her first kid after complaining she could never find one when she needed it and they all got used.

I calculated how many wipes I'd need until potty training and an Evri van turned up half full of wipes. I was so smug that I'd preordered all my wipes...
Didn't even last a year lol

I always gift something to my friends when they become dads as they usually get left out. And I make the gift about themselves rather than the kid. All of the following are from my personal experience, very successful gifts.
A good electric shaving razor(if they shave). Dads really don’t find to shave well after having a kid for some time and end up looking shabby.
Matching clothes for their kids and themselves. Especially, if the dad is your close friend and you know what they nerd about. Maybe a sports team or tv show or comic hero etc.
Bone induction headphones. So that they can watch their TV while being aware of the baby
Vouchers for services at home. For example, car wash at home, or haircut at home. Don’t give spa vouchers etx as dads feel too guilty to go out during the first few months.
Meal kits? Or breakfast kits? Makes them feel like a superhero.
Avoid giving things that will need them to leave their family for a few hours. They usually find it hard to plan that.

I got my hubby a pair of cuff links with my kids fingerprint in them for our wedding when our youngest was still tiny. They meant the world to him but if he’s not a cuff links kinda guy as my husband also wore a suit to work you can get all kinds of jewellery or a key chain with them too.

Obviously depends entirely on the person. Thinking back to when I had newborns....
All of my time/money/energy went on the kiddo. So nothing hobby and interest related works, as I wouldn't have had the capacity to enjoy it - my Xbox was gathering dust, my DIY projects halted, I stopped tending to my garden etc.
I also received a few books from people - nice gesture, but again, no capacity to read them.
The big appreciation at that time would have been food and drink related.
Maybe a few bags of nice coffee beans/grounds if they're into that? Or just eat/deliveroo vouchers for a nice takeaway would have been very much appreciated. Even restaurant vouchers - we used to take kiddo out shopping quite often for something to do - and would often sit and have a lunch out somewhere. I think we got a Nandos voucher off one of our friends, and it was nice to sit and have one while we were out one day.
